Chapter 1383 403: The Beginning of Chaos
Chapter 1383 403: The Beginning of Chaos
Behind the stone wall of the maze, two preparatory students from the Defense School were leaning back to back, breathing heavily in tension. Their magic power had already been exhausted, and one of their mage robes still had holes corroded by acid.
"We... we're lost, Martin." One of the scrawny apprentices trembled in his voice, "The map is fake, we were deceived by those undead!"
The apprentice referred to as Martin was pale as he gripped his magic wand tightly, the faint glow at its tip flickering like a candle in the wind.
"We were too naive... to believe that Master Merk would kindly prepare a supply point for us!"
"I knew it, that 'official supply point' was never an actual supply point, it was a trap set by Master Merk intentionally!"
The two pitiful kids only uncovered the first layer of deception.
The so-called official supply point was indeed fake, but you can't really blame Master Merk, who meticulously designed the maze, for this jokery.
Just as they were sinking into despair, a sound of skeletal footsteps echoed from a corner of the corridor.
They immediately tensed, gathering what little magic power they had left at the tip of their wands, only to see a lone skeleton soldier appear before them.
It did not screech and charge like other undead, but merely tilted its head, its soul-fire lit eye sockets silently "watching" them.
Martin immediately raised his magic wand, but the skeleton soldier slowly raised its bony hand, waved it, then pointed to another fork behind them, motioning "follow."
"What... what does it want?" the scrawny apprentice asked, puzzled.
"A trap, definitely!" Martin said warily, "Don't trust it!"
The skeleton soldier seemed to see through their hesitation.
It no longer paid attention to them, walking towards the fork by itself. Just as it turned a corner, a non-undead growl echoed, followed by the clashing of metal.
Moments later, the skeleton soldier returned, dragging half of an Earth Cave Spider's carcass with it, throwing it before the two, pointing once more to the fork.
It seemed to be saying —
I can lead you out.
The two at their wit's end exchanged glances, seeing the shock in each other's eyes. There were demons behind that path, but this skeleton soldier... was it helping them by diverting the danger?
After hesitating again and again, they eventually chose to follow it.
The skeleton soldier led the way, its pace neither fast nor slow, stopping at each fork to draw simple maps on the ground with bones, indicating the locations of traps.
Many of the traps in the maze were pressure-sensitive and triggered by life signs; mirror images of regular demons or skeleton soldiers could easily discover and avoid these dangers.
This gesture gradually dispelled the doubts of the two apprentices.
They even wondered if this undead might be a hidden "easter egg" set up by Master Merk, specifically to help those unlucky enough to stumble at the so-called "official supply point."
"Saint Sis above... I knew Master Merk wouldn't design a checkpoint that we couldn't possibly clear!" The scrawny apprentice said with a flushed face, excitedly.
Martin did not speak but couldn't help the doubt surfacing in his heart —
Did I wrongly accuse the master?
Soon, the skeleton soldier led them to a secluded dead-end.
They were about to be on guard when they saw a cluster of grass emitting a faint white glow at the end of the alley, its gentle light like silver rays cast by the moon!
"It's Moonlight Grass!" the scrawny apprentice cried out in delight and immediately moved forward to pick it.
That was quite a rare piece of alchemy material!
Although the master might not lack it, for average magic apprentices, obtaining a stalk would cost no less than a few months of saving their living expenses.
However, just as his fingers touched the blades of grass, a net fell from above, instantly suspending him upside down, caught unaware.
Martin was shocked; just as he was about to chant a spell, he realized that the skeleton soldier had snuck up behind him at some point, a sturdy leg bone striking his wrist with a "snap," causing his magic wand to fall.
"Ow—!" Martin cried out in pain, clutching his nearly fractured hand as he stumbled backward, tripping over pebbles on the ground.
The skeleton soldier toying with the leg bone made no further attacks.
It merely bent down, picked up the magic wand from the ground, then pointed to the purse at the waist of the friend hanging in mid-air, pointing to itself repeatedly.
Martin instantly understood its meaning.
This undead didn't want their lives; it simply wanted to rob them.
He swallowed hard.
"I'll... give you everything, can you spare me?"
Without his magic wand, his combat power was barely more than that of an old Imperial farmer, perhaps even less than the well-trained farmer.
Looking at the nodding skeleton, Martin used trembling hands to untie the pouch hanging from his waist, which held a few coins and the demon crystals he harvested in the maze.
The skeleton grabbed it all at once, then rummaged through the belongings of the guy suspended in mid-air too.
Just as Martin hesitated whether to negotiate with the skeleton to return his magic wand, the skeleton suddenly crushed the distress rune it looted from them.
Martin's face turned sharply pale.
"No—!"
He lunged forward, trying to take back the talisman stone, but it was too late.
The skeleton, scattering the rune's fragments towards him, evaded his lunge with surprisingly nimble skills, disappearing without a trace before the patrolling assistant arrived...
...
Regardless of whether the magic apprentices from the Academic State enjoyed it or not, the players participating in the All Souls Festival activity had a blast this time.
