Chapter 1371 - 400: The Demon King’s Counter-Scheme (Part 2)
The adventurer seemed genuinely duped by him, rubbing his hands with a shy smile on his face, yet his hearty voice had a hint of flattery.
"Haha, I believe you! The mages of the Academic State are renowned across the Aus Continent. If you need more of these shiny things, we can collaborate long-term. By the way, my name is Osa! May I ask your esteemed name?"
Long-term collaboration?
Kemidir smiled slightly, feeling amused by this rough adventurer's "arrogance," but his face remained appreciative.
He nodded elegantly and proactively extended his hand.
"Of course we can. I am Kemidir, an assistant at the Tower of Great Sage."
Upon hearing the words "Tower of Great Sage," the awe on Osa's face grew even deeper.
Kemidir greatly enjoyed that look, generously inviting Osa to sit down and ordering him an expensive mug of ale, then casually moved to the main topic.
"Brother Osa, you mentioned that southern mine owner earlier... I'm very interested. To be honest, us mages need high-quality Demon Crystals for our research. If you could introduce me to that esteemed gentleman, there will definitely be a profit share for you."
While speaking, he casually shook his money pouch.
Though somewhat obvious, he knew well what could attract these adventurers.
As expected, Osa swallowed his saliva greedily, yet his envious look soon turned into a difficult expression, and he sighed heavily.
"Mr. Kemidir, I really want to help you, but... this matter might not be easy."
"Oh?"
Kemidir calmly glanced at Osa, sipped some butter beer, and waited for the adventurer to continue.
Osa scratched his messy stubbly beard, struggled for a while, finally lowered his voice, and candidly said, "Master Mage, to be honest, I'm not that familiar with Baron Gess... um, he's a noble of the Campbell Duchy, and I'm just a reckless adventurer; how could I have the chance to form such connections? I merely helped him with a small favor."
Seeing Kemidir's expression turn disappointed, Osa continued to explain, blushing.
"Also, his Demon Crystal mine isn't without issues. The richest deposits are right next to a burial ground. There are Undead everywhere there, even his lord's lord couldn't handle them, let alone a mere baron... The Demon Crystal I have was actually picked up just outside that mine during a commission from the adventurer guild."
Osa's words not only hinted at his ordinary relations with the baron but also highlighted the huge difficulty in mining, seemingly trying to dissuade Kemidir.
However, Kemidir's eyes lit up instantly upon hearing it.
Undead?
Unexploitable?
These two words combined acted like a key, instantly opening a door to fame and fortune in his mind!
A plan to kill two birds with one stone rapidly took shape in his heart.
If operated well, this could not only earn him a fortune but also serve as a stepping stone to befriending "Baron Gess!"
Unable to contain his excitement any longer, he grabbed Osa's shoulder, looking intently at him until he felt uneasy, then lowered his voice to speak.
"My friend, I have a perfect plan for you and me to 'collaborate and win.' You won't have to take any risks but can share in the profits, and with some luck, you might earn enough to last a lifetime... I wonder if you're interested."
Seeing Kemidir's mysterious demeanor, Osa swallowed nervously and whispered.
"...What plan?"
Kemidir gestured for him to come closer, then confidently revealed his idea.
"Recently, the Tower of Great Sage is organizing the Maze Trial for the All Souls Festival, and my master is responsible for this event. I happen to have connections to persuade him to approve a budget to hire adventurers like you to 'introduce' a batch of Undead for our trial..."
His plan was simple.
Just bring the Undead from Baron Gess's territory to the man-made maze in the Northern Wilderness; they're all Undead anyway, and presumably Master Merk wouldn't mind where they come from or any hidden deals behind it.
Seeing Osa shocked by his plan, Kemidir's lips curled into a profound smile.
"Just think about it, we are essentially using Academic State funds to clear the Undead in Baron Gess's mine for free, which is an enormous favor. You said you have a common relationship with him, but with this gift, he will surely treat you as a valued guest, and that's just the first of many benefits."
"Second, once the Undead are dealt with, the baron can smoothly mine Demon Crystals, and I can obtain the Magic Materials I need. As for the third, and most important point—"
He paused, eyes burning as he looked at Osa, "As the facilitator of all this, what I ask for is merely thirty percent of the Demon Crystal mine's annual yield. Of course, within that thirty percent, there is surely a share for you."
He explained this "one stone three birds" perfect plan with pride in his words.
Osa was indeed tempted, at least his face showed an excited expression.
However, his excitement soon cooled.
He scratched the back of his head, hesitated a bit, then spoke.
