Chapter 1188 - 355: Trial on the Snowfields
Chapter 1188 - 355: Trial on the Snowfields
Early the next morning, when Luo Yan arrived at the entrance of the "Adventurer's House," Finic, Ira, and Barrett were already waiting there.
The sadness of their friend's departure seemed to have been replaced by a firm determination and anticipation for the future. Their eyes were less naive and carried a weighty resolve, as if they intended to carry the persistence their dear friend had let go of, to move forward on his behalf and fulfill his dream of entering the Academic State.
Although Luo Yan thought they were probably moved by their own thoughts, that young man named Leo truly saw things clearly before he left.
"Good morning, Mr. Colin," Finic stepped forward proactively, looking much more spirited than he did the day before.
Luo Yan spoke in a gentle tone.
"Good morning, it seems you all have recovered well."
Finic shyly smiled.
"Not too bad... This is the last stretch, after all. Without being in high spirits, we wouldn't be able to finish the remaining journey. By the way, where's Miss Sarah? Didn't she come with you?"
Luo Yan nodded.
"She's packing her luggage. We're heading there first; she'll join us later."
Finic nodded understandingly and continued.
"By the way, have you eaten yet? If not, we can wait for you to finish breakfast before setting out. That place is quite remote, and there's nowhere to eat."
Luo Yan politely declined his offer.
"I've already had breakfast. If you all are ready, let's set off."
"Alright! We'll follow your lead."
With enthusiasm, Finic took the lead, and without saying much more, the group set off in the direction of the Academic State.
Passing through the chaotic and noisy Traveler Camp, they headed east, climbing over a hill, where the scenery opened up before them.
This was east of the Dragon Tooth Mountain Range, the legendary Northern Wilderness, a boundless expanse of snow merging with the distant marshes.
At the edge of the snowfield lay the border of Rhode Kingdom, as well as the temporary camp set up by the mages of the Academic State.
Everything here was starkly different from the Eagle Rock Territory.
Tens of identical white tents were neatly arranged on the snow, and the ground was magically cleaned spotless, without a trace of mud.
Several apprentices in simple gray mage robes controlled floating soft orbs of light, providing illumination to the camp in the early morning.
Their feather pens swiftly dashed across enchanted paper, registering information for the students coming to enroll.
The entire process was quiet, efficient, and brimming with a sense of order.
The style of the Academic State was evidenced here, a glimpse of the meticulousness built upon magic, transcending the mundane.
"Mr. Colin! Over here!" Finic, having found the registration point, excitedly waved his hand, beckoning Luo Yan and his companions over.
The group lined up in the long queue, following the earnest yet anxious faces, slowly moving toward the tent that would decide their fate.
When Finic's turn came, a rather stern-looking magic apprentice asked without looking up, "Name, origin, intention."
Before answering, Finic leaned over to Luo Yan and whispered, "Mr. Colin, this is just for indicating an intention, no need to worry too much. The assessment for apprentices is a two-way selection; even if we pass the written and oral exams, the final admission depends on which Mage Tower's master is willing to take us."
Luo Yan nodded understandingly, signaling with his eyes for him to hurry up and register, lest the magic apprentice in charge of registration become annoyed.
The expression on that face was visibly starting to show impatience.
Finic straightened his back and quickly reported his aspirations: "Finic, from Rhode Kingdom, intention Tower of Great Sage!"
Behind him, Ira promptly said, "Ira, Rhode Kingdom, intention Tower of Star School."
Barrett scratched his head shyly and said awkwardly, "Barrett, Rhode Kingdom, intention… Enchantment School."
The three quickly stepped aside after registering.
Finally, it was Luo Yan's turn. His calm demeanor immediately caught the attention of an assistant supervising nearby.
This guy doesn't seem like a newbie...
However, the assistant did not have a Divine sight and couldn't gauge a person's soul, so he only glanced at Luo Yan a couple of times without showing his doubt on his face, nor did he say anything more.
Instead, some resting apprentices noticed, whispering among themselves.
"This guy might be a noble..."
"A noble? How could a noble not have a letter of recommendation? Even a duchy noble would have one, right..."
"Perhaps he's a scion of a fallen noble family. There are quite a few like that, always hoping to leverage some magic talent to make their mark in the Academic State and revive their family... Hehe, I think they're in the wrong place; if they want to make a name for themselves and make money, they should go to the New Continent. This is a place for academic pursuit!" an apprentice mocked until the overseeing assistant's gaze floated over, making him nervously shut his mouth.
Luo Yan inwardly chuckled at the situation.
It seems the Academic State is also a place with strict hierarchies, not much different from the Holy City, just wrapped in a skin that ordinary people can't recognize.
After registration, the apprentices handling the paperwork distributed a wooden plaque to each person, engraved with a number, without any expression.
"The exam is on the morning of the third day from now. This is your number, keep it safe; it won't be replaced if lost."
Finic nodded nervously, said thank you, and then turned with his companions to leave the registration point.
