The Shattered Remains
The Shattered Remains
Piper left Isabel’s apartment in a daze, the cold night air slapping her face as she stepped outside. It was as though the weight of Isabel’s confession had hollowed her out, leaving her numb and detached. Her heart pounded in her chest, but she couldn’t feel anything except the dull ache of betrayal. Isabel had been feeding Marcus information, scheming to ruin her business, and twisting Jasper’s trust in her for years — all out of jealousy.
But it wasn’t just the revelation of Isabel’s actions that had left Piper shaken; it was the emotional fallout. As much as Isabel had tried to manipulate and destroy, there had been cracks in her relationship with Jasper long before Isabel entered their lives. Cracks Piper wasn’t sure it could ever be repaired.
As Piper reached her car, she paused, her hands trembling as she fumbled with the keys. For a brief moment, she leaned against the cold metal of the door, closing her eyes and taking deep breaths to steady herself. The reality of everything was crashing down on her, and she needed a moment to gather her thoughts before she completely unraveled.
Jasper had cut ties with Isabel. That much was clear. But where did that leave them?
With shaking fingers, she finally managed to unlock the car and slipped into the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel tightly. The silence inside the car felt suffocating, filled with the weight of everything she hadn’t yet processed. Jasper’s face kept flashing in her mind—the way his eyes had looked when he realized how deeply he’d been betrayed by someone he had trusted. It mirrored her own feelings of betrayal, not just from Isabel, but from all the lies and manipulation that had infected their lives.
Was there even a way to fix this? Could she ever really trust again?
The sound of her phone vibrating in the cupholder pulled her out of her thoughts. She glanced down and saw Jasper’s name flashing on the screen. For a moment, she hesitated. Her heart ached, torn between the love they had shared and the tangled mess that now stood between them.
After a long pause, she answered.
“Piper,” Jasper’s voice came through the line, strained and heavy with emotion. “Can we talk? Please. I need to see you.”
Piper’s chest tightened, and she swallowed hard before responding. “Where are you?”
“I’m still at Isabel’s apartment,” he said quietly. “I can meet you somewhere, or...”
“I’ll come back,” she interrupted softly. There was no point in delaying the conversation. They needed to face whatever was left of their relationship head-on. And if there was even a chance of salvaging what they had, it had to start now.
With a deep breath, Piper started the car and turned back toward Isabel’s apartment, her mind still racing with doubts and questions. Every mile felt longer than the last, the weight of the impending conversation pressing down on her like a heavy cloud. By the time she parked outside the building again, her heart was racing, and her palms were slick with sweat.
When she stepped out of the car, she saw Jasper standing near the entrance, his hands shoved into his coat pockets. His face was pale, etched with exhaustion and a deep sadness that mirrored her own. As soon as their eyes met, she felt a pang of emotion that made her chest tighten even more.
He stepped forward as she approached, his movements slow and deliberate, as if unsure of how to proceed. For a moment, they stood in silence, the tension between them almost unbearable.
“I didn’t know,” Jasper said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. “I had no idea she was capable of doing something like this.”
Piper nodded, her throat tight with unshed tears. “Neither did I.”
Jasper’s gaze dropped to the ground, his shoulders sagging under the weight of everything they had been through. “I should’ve seen it. I should’ve known. But I was so focused on fixing everything between us that I missed it.”
Piper’s chest ached at his words, and she stepped closer, reaching out to gently touch his arm. “This isn’t your fault, Jasper. Isabel fooled both of us. She manipulated everything. We couldn’t have known.”
He looked up at her, his eyes filled with regret. “But it wasn’t just her, was it? Things were already falling apart between us, Piper. And I don’t know if we can ever fix that.”
Her breath caught in her throat, and she felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. Jasper’s words hit deep, touching the raw, unhealed wounds that had been festering for months — years even.
“I don’t know either,” Piper admitted, her voice shaking. “So much has happened, and I feel like... like we’ve lost ourselves along the way. Like I don’t even know where we stand anymore.”
Jasper’s jaw clenched, and he took a deep breath, stepping even closer until they were only inches apart. “I still love you, Piper. I never stopped loving you. Even when things got hard, even when everything fell apart, I still believed we could find our way back to each other.”
Piper’s heart skipped a beat, her emotions swirling in a chaotic storm. She had loved Jasper for so long, had built a life with him, but now, after everything, she wasn’t sure if love was enough to heal the scars they had inflicted on each other.
“I love you too, Jasper,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “But I’m not sure love is enough to fix this. We’ve both been hurt, and I don’t know if we can go back to the way things were.”
He looked down, his face tightening with pain. “I don’t want to go back to the way things were. I want to move forward. To start over.”
Piper blinked, her mind racing as she processed his words. Starting over sounded so simple, but in reality, it was anything but. The weight of their past hung over them, casting a shadow that would be hard to escape.
“Can we really do that?” she asked, her voice trembling. “Can we start over when so much has happened? When so much has changed?”
Jasper reached out, gently cupping her face in his hands, his touch warm and comforting. “I believe we can. But only if we both want it. Only if we’re both willing to try.”
Piper closed her eyes, leaning into his touch, her heart torn between the desire to hold on to the love they had shared and the fear of falling back into the same patterns of hurt and betrayal.
“I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I don’t know if I have it in me to go through all of this again.”
Jasper’s hands dropped from her face, and she opened her eyes to see the pain in his expression. “I understand,” he said softly, his voice filled with sorrow. “But just know that I’ll always be here. No matter what.”
The weight of his words hung between them, and for the first time in a long time, Piper felt the finality of their situation. Love, as strong as it was, might not be enough to heal the wounds they had both suffered. And as much as she wanted to believe in the possibility of starting over, the reality was far more complicated.
“I need time,” Piper said, her voice barely a whisper. “I need to figure out what I want, what’s best for Lily, for myself. I can’t rush into anything.”
Jasper nodded, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Take all the time you need, Piper. I’ll wait.”
She gave him a sad smile, her heart aching with the weight of everything they had been through. As much as she wanted to cling to the hope that they could find their way back to each other, she wasn’t sure if it was possible. Too much had happened, and the scars run deep.
“I’ll see you later,” she whispered, stepping back from him.
Jasper watched her go, his face etched with sadness, but he didn’t try to stop her. He knew, just as she did, that they were standing at a crossroads. And the path they chose now would determine everything.
As Piper walked back to her car, the cold rain soaking through her jacket, she felt the weight of her decision pressing down on her. She wasn’t ready to choose between Gabriel, Jasper, or even the idea of being alone. All she knew was that she needed space, time to breathe, and time to think.
She climbed into the driver’s seat and gripped the steering wheel tightly, staring out at the rain-splattered windshield. The truth was, she didn’t know what the future held. She didn’t know if she could fix her fractured relationship with Jasper, if Gabriel would still be there when the dust settled, or if Noah’s presence would continue to haunt her.
