Threads of the Past
Threads of the Past
Piper sat alone in the dimly lit café, her fingers tapping restlessly on the table. The place was quiet, just a few scattered patrons nursing their drinks. The smell of fresh coffee mixed with the rain from outside, but it did little to ease the tension coiled tightly in her chest. She wasn’t sure what to expect from this meeting with Noah, but the pit in her stomach told her it wasn’t going to be easy.
The door chimed, and Piper looked up as Noah stepped inside. He scanned the room, spotting her immediately. His face was set in a grim expression as he walked over, looking like a man with far too many burdens. Piper felt a familiar pang in her chest — memories of when she’d loved him, before everything had fallen apart. But now, the man in front of her seemed like a stranger, someone who had caused more pain than joy.
Noah slid into the seat across from her, his eyes meeting hers briefly before flickering away, as if he were ashamed of what he’d become. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken words.
“Thanks for meeting me,” Noah said finally, his voice low and hoarse. He sounded tired, worn down by whatever had happened since they last saw each other.
Piper forced herself to stay calm. “What is it, Noah? What’s so important that you had to reach out now?”
Noah ran a hand through his messy hair, looking down at the table. “I’ve made mistakes,” he admitted, his voice tight. “A lot of them. But I’m not here to make excuses. I’m here because... because I don’t know how to fix this. Everything’s gotten so out of control.”
Piper’s jaw tightened, anger simmering just below the surface. “You’re right. Everything has gotten out of control. You lied to me, Noah. You put our daughter in danger. You let that criminal organization into our lives. Do you even realize the damage you’ve done?”
Noah flinched, guilt flashing in his eyes. “I know. And I’m sorry. I never wanted any of this to happen.”
Piper shook her head, her hands balling into fists under the table. “Sorry doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t undo the fact that Lily and I have been living in fear because of you.”
He swallowed hard, his gaze still downcast. “I never meant for it to get this bad. I thought I could handle it, that I could keep you both safe without you ever knowing what was going on. But I was wrong.”
Piper leaned forward, her voice sharp. “Wrong? You were more than wrong, Noah. You were reckless, and you kept me in the dark. You’re still keeping things from me, aren’t you?”
Noah’s shoulders slumped, and for a long moment, he didn’t answer. Finally, he let out a long, defeated sigh. “There’s something I need to tell you,” he said quietly. “Something I should have told you a long time ago.”
Piper’s heart raced as she braced herself for whatever he was about to reveal. She had a feeling that whatever Noah was hiding, it wasn’t going to be easy to hear.
“I got involved with Marcus’s organization before we even split up,” Noah admitted, his voice thick with regret. “It started small — just helping them move money around, thinking it was harmless. But it escalated quickly. I got in over my head, and by the time I realized what kind of people I was dealing with, it was too late. They had leverage on me... on us.”
Piper’s stomach twisted. “Leverage? What do you mean?”
Noah looked up at her, pain etched across his face. “They threatened to go after you and Lily if I didn’t cooperate. I thought I could protect you by staying involved, by keeping them at bay. But all I did was drag you deeper into their world.”
Piper’s breath caught in her throat as the weight of Noah’s confession sank in. He had been working with Marcus’s organization for years, even when they were still together. All this time, she had believed their problems were about their relationship, about their inability to make things work — but in reality, Noah had been hiding this dark secret.
“How could you do this?” Piper whispered, her voice shaking. “How could you put our family at risk like that?”
Noah’s eyes filled with tears, his voice cracking. “I thought I could fix it. I thought if I kept them happy, they’d leave you alone. But then things spiraled out of control, and I didn’t know how to get out. I was scared, Piper. I didn’t want them to hurt you or Lily.”
Piper’s heart raced, her mind reeling. She had been living a lie for so long, unaware of the danger that had been lurking just beneath the surface. And now, with everything out in the open, the betrayal felt even deeper.
“What do they want now?” Piper asked, her voice laced with fear.
Noah hesitated, his face pale. “They want leverage over Gabriel. He’s been working to take them down from the inside, and they know it. They want to use you and Lily as pawns to get to him.”
Piper’s blood ran cold. Gabriel had always been a target, but now, knowing that Marcus’s organization had their sights set on her and Lily made the danger feel far too real. She had to protect her daughter, no matter what.
“Noah,” Piper said, her voice trembling, “you need to get out of this. You need to leave, disappear, do whatever it takes to keep them away from us. If they know you’re still around, they’ll keep using you.”
Noah’s face hardened, his expression one of resignation. “I know. But leaving won’t fix everything. They’re not going to stop until they get what they want. And if they can’t get to me, they’ll come after you.”
Piper’s heart pounded, panic rising in her chest. She had thought the worst was behind them, but now, she realized the danger was only just beginning. Gabriel, still recovering from his injuries, was in no position to defend them, and Noah’s involvement only complicated things further.
“What are we supposed to do?” Piper asked, her voice cracking with desperation.
Noah reached across the table, taking her hand in his. “I’m going to fix this, Piper. I promise you, I’ll make it right. But you need to stay away from me. I’ll draw them away, keep them focused on me. It’s the only way to protect you and Lily.”
Piper wanted to believe him, but after everything, trust felt like an impossible leap. Still, she had no choice. Her priority had to be Lily, and if Noah’s plan could keep them safe, she would have to take that risk.
“Fine,” Piper said, her voice shaking. “But if you break that promise, if you do anything that puts Lily at risk, I’ll never forgive you.”
Noah nodded, his eyes filled with sorrow. “I know.”
As the weight of their conversation settled between them, Piper felt a strange mixture of relief and fear. She wasn’t sure if Noah’s plan would work, but it was the only option they had. The alternative — continuing to live under the threat of Marcus’s criminal network — was unbearable.
Piper stood up, her legs feeling weak beneath her. “Take care of yourself, Noah,” she said softly. “And stay away from us.”
Noah gave her a pained smile. “You, too, Piper. You deserve better than all of this.”
With that, she turned and walked out of the café, the sound of her footsteps echoing in the quiet space. Outside, the rain had picked up, and she pulled her jacket tighter around her as she made her way to her car. Her mind was spinning, a whirlwind of emotions she couldn’t untangle.
She had barely made it out of one nightmare, only to find herself facing another. The threat of Marcus’s criminal organization still loomed large, and now, with Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah all intertwined in her life, Piper knew she had to make a choice — one that would have life-altering consequences.
But as she sat in her car, staring at the rain-splattered windshield, Piper realized she wasn’t ready to make that choice. Not yet. There were too many unknowns, too many unanswered questions, and the weight of it all was suffocating.
She needed time to think, to sort through the tangled mess her life had become. But time was something she didn’t have.
