The Lies That Binds

A Temporary Victory

A Temporary Victory

The heavy scent of smoke lingered in the air as Piper sat by Gabriel’s side, her heart still racing from the chaos that had torn through the warehouse. Her hands were trembling as she wiped the dust and blood from his face. His eyes, though heavy with pain, remained locked on hers.

“I told you,” he whispered, his voice strained. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Piper forced a smile through the tears that had gathered in her eyes. “You’d better not.”

The explosion had crippled Marcus’s operation, but Piper knew that this victory came at a heavy cost. The warehouse was in ruins, and Gabriel had been badly injured, taking the brunt of the blast to protect her. She hadn’t even had a moment to process the fact that Marcus was gone, but his criminal network — his empire — was still out there, weakened but not defeated.

“Hold on,” Piper urged, her voice trembling. “We need to get you out of here.”

Gabriel winced as she moved his arm, but he nodded, gritting his teeth against the pain. She looked around the wreckage, searching for any sign of Jasper or the rest of the team. The explosion had scattered them, leaving only silence in its wake.

“Jasper!” Piper called, her voice cracking.

A moment later, Jasper’s voice echoed from across the rubble. “Over here!”

Relief flooded through her as she spotted him, emerging from the shadows with a limp but still on his feet. He made his way toward them, his face streaked with soot and exhaustion.

“Is he —” Jasper began, his gaze falling on Gabriel’s pale face.

“He’s hurt,” Piper interrupted, her voice thick with worry. “We need to get him out of here.”

Jasper nodded, his expression grim as he knelt beside Gabriel. Together, they lifted him carefully, maneuvering him through the wreckage toward the exit. Piper’s heart pounded with every step, fear twisting in her gut as they struggled to keep Gabriel steady. He was pale, his breathing shallow, but he hadn’t given up. Not yet.

As they reached the edge of the warehouse, the distant sound of sirens cut through the air — reinforcements, both from law enforcement and emergency services. They had been ready for this, but the reality of the aftermath was hitting Piper hard.

She had spent so long fighting to protect everything she loved — her daughter, her business, her life — and now, standing in the ruins of the battle, she wasn’t sure what was left to protect. They had struck a blow against Marcus, but the toll it had taken was almost too much to bear.

Once they were outside, Jasper and Piper carefully set Gabriel down on the gravel. Piper knelt beside him, taking his hand in hers, her fingers brushing his bloodied knuckles.

“You’re going to be okay,” she whispered, more to convince herself than him.

Gabriel smiled weakly, though the pain in his eyes was unmistakable. “I’ve had worse.”

“Don’t joke,” Piper said, her voice breaking. “Not now.”

Jasper stood a few steps away, his gaze scanning the wreckage of the warehouse. His expression was dark, his mind clearly focused on the fact that Marcus’s criminal network wasn’t gone. This wasn’t over, and Piper could see that knowledge weighing heavily on him.

“They’ll come back,” Jasper said, his voice low. “Marcus might be gone, but his men will regroup. They’ll retaliate.”

Piper nodded, her stomach churning at the thought. She knew Jasper was right. This fight wasn’t over, and with Marcus’s empire still out there, they were far from safe. The network had deep roots, and there were still people loyal to Marcus who would want revenge.

But right now, all she could think about was getting Gabriel to safety.

“Jasper, can you find the paramedics?” Piper asked, her voice strained.

He hesitated for a moment, his eyes flicking between Piper and Gabriel before he nodded and turned away. As he disappeared into the distance, Piper looked down at Gabriel, her heart aching with a mixture of gratitude and fear.

“I don’t know what I would’ve done without you,” she whispered.

Gabriel’s eyes softened, and he squeezed her hand gently. “You’d be fine,” he said, his voice weak but filled with sincerity. “You’ve always been stronger than you think.”

Piper blinked back tears, feeling the weight of everything that had happened crashing down on her. Gabriel had been her constant, the one person she could rely on when everything else fell apart. But now, seeing him like this — broken and bloodied — she couldn’t shake the fear that she might lose him, too.

“I don’t want to be strong anymore,” Piper admitted, her voice barely a whisper. “I’m tired, Gabriel.”

He reached up, brushing a strand of hair from her face with a shaky hand. “I know,” he said softly. “But you’re not alone.”

The vulnerability in his words struck her deeply, and for a moment, the chaos around them seemed to fade. Piper leaned into his touch, her chest tightening with the weight of emotions she had tried so hard to bury. Gabriel had risked everything for her — for Lily — and now, as he lay wounded, the reality of their situation hit her full force.

“I can’t lose you,” Piper said, her voice trembling.

“You won’t,” Gabriel promised, though his voice was fading with exhaustion. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Just then, the sound of approaching footsteps signaled Jasper’s return, and with him, a pair of paramedics carrying a stretcher. They worked quickly, lifting Gabriel onto the stretcher with care as Piper stood back, her heart in her throat.

“He’s going to need surgery,” one of the paramedics said as they checked Gabriel’s vitals. “But he’s stable for now.”

Piper nodded, feeling a sense of relief, though the anxiety still gnawed at her. Gabriel was alive, and that was all that mattered right now.

“I’m going with him,” she said firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument.

Jasper gave her a brief nod of understanding. “I’ll take care of things here. Go.”

As the paramedics wheeled Gabriel toward the waiting ambulance, Piper followed closely, her mind racing with thoughts of what would happen next. The criminal organization might have been dealt a heavy blow, but they were far from defeated. And with Gabriel’s life hanging in the balance, the future seemed more uncertain than ever.

The hospital waiting room was cold and sterile, a sharp contrast to the chaos Piper had just escaped. She sat in one of the stiff plastic chairs, her hands clenched tightly in her lap as she stared at the door leading to the operating room. Gabriel had been taken into surgery almost immediately, and every passing minute felt like an eternity.

Jasper had arrived shortly after, taking a seat beside her. He hadn’t said much, but his presence was a quiet comfort. They were both exhausted — emotionally, physically — but neither of them could rest until they knew Gabriel was going to be okay.

“He’s tough,” Jasper said, breaking the silence. “He’ll pull through.”

Piper nodded, though her mind was filled with doubt. Gabriel had sacrificed so much to protect her and Lily, and now, with him lying in a hospital bed, the weight of that sacrifice felt overwhelming.

“He shouldn’t have had to,” Piper whispered, her voice thick with guilt. “I put him in this position.”

Jasper frowned, shaking his head. “No, Piper. This isn’t on you. Gabriel made his choices, and he did it because he cares about you.”

Piper’s chest tightened at the words. She knew Gabriel cared about her, but the complexity of their relationship — complicated by secrets, lies, and the constant threat of danger — made everything feel uncertain. And then there was Jasper, who had once been her rock, her partner, before everything had fallen apart.

The silence stretched on, heavy with unspoken emotions.

Finally, Jasper spoke again. “Piper, I know things have been... complicated between us. But I want you to know that no matter what happens, I’m here. For you. For Lily.”

Piper glanced at him, the sincerity in his eyes tugging at her heart. Jasper had always been there for her, even when their relationship had crumbled under the weight of everything that had happened. But now, with Gabriel in the picture, the lines between them were even more blurred.

“I know,” Piper said quietly, her voice filled with uncertainty. “But right now, I don’t know what to do. I feel like everything is falling apart.”

Jasper’s hand brushed hers, a gentle touch that sent a ripple of emotions through her. “We’ll figure it out,” he said softly. “Together.”

Before Piper could respond, the door to the operating room swung open, and the surgeon stepped out, still wearing his scrubs. Piper stood up immediately, her heart pounding in her chest.

“Is he...?” Piper asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The surgeon smiled softly, nodding. “The surgery went well. Gabriel is stable, and he’s going to recover. It’ll take time, but he’s strong.”

Relief washed over Piper like a tidal wave, and she felt her knees go weak. Jasper caught her arm, steadying her as she let out a shaky breath.

“Thank you,” Piper whispered, tears brimming in her eyes.

The surgeon gave a brief nod before disappearing back into the operating room. Piper sank back into the chair, her body trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and relief.

Gabriel was going to be okay. For now, that was all that mattered.

But as Piper sat there, her thoughts racing, she knew that the fight wasn’t over. Marcus’s criminal network was still out there, lurking in the shadows. And though they had won a temporary victory, the emotional toll was far from over.

Jasper’s hand remained on hers, a steady presence in the storm of emotions that swirled around her. Piper glanced at him, her heart heavy with the weight of everything that had happened.
