The Lies That Binds

Betrayal and Escape

Betrayal and Escape

The cold night air bit at Piper’s face as she and Gabriel burst through the back exit of the bar, running into the darkness. Her mind raced, trying to make sense of the chaos. Just moments ago, Noah had confessed to betraying her, tipping off Marcus’s men about her location to save his own skin. Now they were being hunted, and the weight of Noah’s treachery bore down on her like a suffocating cloud.

Gabriel led the way, his hand gripping hers tightly as they dashed down a narrow alley, shadows creeping in from all sides. Piper’s pulse pounded in her ears, but it was nothing compared to the pounding in her chest — the feeling of her world collapsing, of trust shattered beyond repair.

“Keep moving!” Gabriel hissed over his shoulder, his breath coming in sharp bursts. “We’re almost to the car.”

Piper pushed herself harder, her legs burning with exertion, but her thoughts remained on Noah. How had the man she once loved fallen so far that he was willing to sell her out to save himself? She had already given him too many chances, but this was the final blow. There was no coming back from this.

The sound of footsteps echoed behind them — heavy, relentless footsteps. Piper’s heart lurched, knowing that Marcus’s men were close, too close. She glanced back and saw shadowy figures moving swiftly in the distance, their intent clear.

Her chest tightened as panic gripped her. "They’re catching up!" she gasped.

“We’ll lose them,” Gabriel promised, his voice tense but resolute. He pulled her around a corner, heading toward the parked car waiting in the shadows. The headlights flashed once as the key fob in Gabriel’s hand unlocked the doors.

They scrambled into the car, slamming the doors behind them. Gabriel didn’t waste a second, shoving the key into the ignition and flooring the gas pedal. The tires screeched as they sped away, leaving the figures of Marcus’s men behind them in the dust.

Piper leaned back in the passenger seat, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. Her hands shook as she gripped the edge of the seat, her mind still racing. “We... we made it,” she whispered, though it hardly felt like a victory. They had escaped for now, but the threat still loomed over them.

Gabriel’s jaw was clenched as he steered the car through the dark streets, his eyes flicking between the rearview mirror and the road ahead. “We can’t stop,” he said, his voice low and hard. “Not until we’re safe.”

“Safe,” Piper echoed bitterly, turning to look at him. “Is there anywhere that’s truly safe anymore? With Marcus and his men coming after us, with Noah...”

She trailed off, the betrayal cutting too deep for words. The man she had once loved, the father of her child, had betrayed her in the worst way possible. The thought made her stomach churn.

Gabriel glanced at her, his expression softening for a brief moment. “I know you’re hurting, Piper, but we can still stop this. We have the intel from the warehouse. We know who Marcus is working with, where his operations are. We can take him down.”

“And what if it’s not enough?” Piper asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “What if nothing we do is enough to stop him?”

Gabriel didn’t answer right away, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. “Then we fight harder,” he said finally. “We fight until there’s nothing left to fight for.”

Piper fell silent, her gaze turning to the dark streets passing by outside. The city felt vast and cold, indifferent to the danger closing in around her. How had her life spiraled so far out of control? How had she gone from being a business owner, a mother, to being hunted by a criminal organization?

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, and she pulled it out to see a message from Noah. She hesitated, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn’t want to read it and didn't want to hear any more excuses or explanations. But her fingers moved of their own accord, opening the message.

Noah: I’m sorry, Piper. I didn’t have a choice. I’m going to fix this. Meet me tomorrow night, the old dockyard. I’ll explain everything. I can help you, I swear.

Piper’s throat tightened as she read the words. Noah had always been good at saying the right thing, at making her doubt her own instincts. But this time, she couldn’t ignore the truth. He had led Marcus’s men to her. He had put her life — and Lily’s — in danger.

“You’re not actually thinking about meeting him, are you?” Gabriel asked, his voice cutting through the silence.

Piper glanced at him, her jaw tightening. “I don’t know what to think anymore.”

Gabriel shook his head, his frustration evident. “Noah is dangerous, Piper. He’s been playing both sides, and you know it. He’s only looking out for himself.”

“I know,” Piper said quietly. “But he’s still Lily’s father.”

“And that’s the only reason you’ve kept him in your life this long,” Gabriel replied, his tone sharp. “But look where that’s gotten you. Look at what he’s done. He’s put you in the crosshairs of a criminal organization, and for what? To save his own skin? How much more are you willing to forgive?”

Piper’s hands trembled as she stared down at the phone, her heart aching with the weight of Gabriel’s words. He was right. She knew he was right. But knowing that didn’t make the decision any easier. Noah had been a part of her life for so long, and even after everything he had done, cutting him off completely felt like severing a part of herself.

But could she really afford to keep him around? Could she keep putting herself — and Lily — at risk because of her lingering feelings for a man who had betrayed her so many times?

“I don’t know what to do,” Piper admitted, her voice breaking. “I don’t know who to trust anymore.”

Gabriel’s expression softened, and he reached over, gently placing his hand on hers. “You can trust me, Piper. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve kept things from you, but I’m not going to let anything happen to you. Not to you, not to Lily.”

Piper met his gaze, her heart heavy with emotion. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to trust Gabriel the way she once had, but the doubts still lingered. His past with the criminal network, the secrets he had kept from her — it all weighed on her, even now.

“I want to believe you,” Piper said softly, her voice thick with emotion. “But it feels like every time I start to trust someone, it all falls apart.”

Gabriel’s grip on her hand tightened, his eyes filled with determination. “I’m not going to let it fall apart, Piper. We’re going to stop Marcus. We’re going to end this.”

Piper nodded, though the fear and uncertainty still gnawed at her. She didn’t know what the future held, but for now, she had no choice but to keep moving forward.

Later that night, after finding a safe house far from the prying eyes of Marcus’s men, Piper sat on the edge of the bed, her thoughts still racing. Gabriel had insisted on standing watch, pacing near the window, his eyes scanning the street outside for any sign of trouble.

Piper’s phone buzzed again. Another message from Noah.

Noah: Please, Piper. Meet me at the dockyard tomorrow night. I’m going to fix this, I promise.

She stared at the message, her mind swirling with conflicting emotions. She knew Noah’s promises meant nothing. He had betrayed her time and time again, and tonight had been the final straw. But something in his message gnawed at her — a sense of desperation, a plea that felt different from the lies he had fed her before.

“Gabriel,” Piper called softly, turning toward him. “He wants to meet tomorrow night. He says he can fix this.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened, his body tensing. “It’s a trap.”

“I know,” Piper said quietly, her heart sinking. “But what if it’s not? What if... what if this time he’s telling the truth?”

Gabriel shook his head, stepping toward her. “Piper, you can’t keep giving him the benefit of the doubt. Not after everything he’s done.”

“I don’t want to believe him,” Piper admitted, her voice barely a whisper. “But if there’s a chance he can help us take down Marcus... don’t we have to try?”

Gabriel was silent for a long moment, his eyes searching hers. Finally, he sighed, his expression softening. “If we’re going to do this, we do it on our terms. No surprises.”

Piper nodded, though her heart still ached with uncertainty. She didn’t know what would happen tomorrow night, but she knew one thing for sure: it would be the end of something.

Whether it was the end of Noah’s lies, the end of Marcus’s reign of terror, or the end of the fragile trust Piper had left in anyone... only time would tell.
