Tangled in Deception
Tangled in Deception
Piper sat at the small kitchen table, staring at the untouched cup of coffee in front of her. Her thoughts were a jumble, a storm of confusion, regret, and unrelenting anxiety. The meeting with Gabriel last night had left her more conflicted than ever, but it wasn’t just him on her mind. Noah’s cryptic message weighed heavily, and the dangerous reality of the situation was closing in. However, there was another storm brewing beneath the surface — one she hadn’t fully confronted yet.
Jasper.
Even with the chaos swirling around her, Jasper’s name tugged at her heart, his presence a constant reminder of everything unresolved between them. She had tried to move on, to push those feelings away as she wrestled with her growing connection to Gabriel, but the truth was undeniable: she had never fully let go of Jasper. And the thought of losing him for good — especially to someone like Isabel — terrified her.
Piper didn’t trust Isabel. She never had. From the moment Isabel had appeared in Jasper’s life, there had been something about her — a subtle manipulation, a way of inserting herself into every corner of Jasper’s world. Piper had tried to convince herself that she was being paranoid, that Isabel was just doing her job as his lawyer, but deep down, she knew there was more to it.
And now, with everything spiraling out of control, Isabel seemed poised to make her move. Piper could feel it.
Her phone buzzed on the table, pulling her from her thoughts. She picked it up, her heart racing when she saw the message from the private investigator she had quietly hired a few days ago. She had reached out to him in a moment of desperation, hoping to uncover more about Gabriel’s and Noah’s pasts, to find some clarity in the tangled web of lies and secrets she was trapped in. But now that the investigator was delivering his first update, Piper wasn’t sure if she was ready for what he had to tell her.
Private Investigator: We need to talk. I’ve found some things about Gabriel and Noah. Meet me at the café near the courthouse at noon.
Piper’s stomach tightened with a mix of anticipation and dread. She glanced at the clock. It was already 11:30. She didn’t have much time to prepare herself, but then again, how could she possibly prepare for this? Whatever the investigator had found would either confirm her worst fears or give her the clarity she so desperately needed.
After sending a quick reply to confirm the meeting, Piper stood and moved toward the bedroom, her thoughts racing. She needed to clear her head, to focus on what mattered most: keeping Lily safe. Everything else — her feelings for Gabriel, her lingering attachment to Jasper — would have to take a back seat until the truth was uncovered.
But as Piper reached for her jacket, her phone buzzed again, this time with a message from Jasper. Her heart lurched.
Jasper: Can we talk later? I’ve been thinking about us. A lot.
Piper stared at the message, her heart pounding in her chest. “Us.” The word hit her like a wave, pulling her back into the emotional tangle she had tried so hard to avoid. She couldn’t deny that she had been thinking about them too — about the life they had built together, the bond they shared through Lily. But the chaos of the past few months had pushed them apart, and now, with Isabel hovering so close to Jasper, Piper wasn’t sure what “us” even meant anymore.
A pang of jealousy hit her as she thought about Isabel. She knew that Isabel had been working behind the scenes, manipulating situations to make it seem like Piper had already moved on with Gabriel. It was subtle, but Piper could see the seeds Isabel had planted — moments of doubt, small comments that fueled Jasper’s insecurities.
Piper typed out a quick reply to Jasper, her fingers trembling slightly.
Me: Yeah. I’ll let you know when I’m free.
She hit send, her emotions swirling with uncertainty. As much as she wanted to figure things out with Jasper, she needed to know the truth about Gabriel and Noah first. That was her priority now. She couldn’t afford any more secrets, not with Lily’s safety hanging in the balance.
After grabbing her keys and double-checking that Lily was safe with her babysitter for the afternoon, Piper left the house, her heart heavy with the weight of everything left unsaid.
Piper arrived at the café near the courthouse just before noon, her nerves on edge as she scanned the room for the private investigator. She spotted him in the back corner, a man in his mid-forties with graying hair and sharp eyes. He was seated at a small table, a cup of coffee in front of him, and he gave her a brief nod when she walked in.
Taking a deep breath, Piper made her way over and sat down across from him, her heart pounding in her chest.
“Thanks for meeting with me,” she said quietly, her voice tight with anticipation.
The investigator — Mark Benson — gave her a curt nod. “I’ve found some things you need to know, but I’ll be honest with you, Piper — it’s not good.”
Piper’s stomach dropped. “What did you find?”
Mark pulled a folder from his briefcase and set it on the table between them. “I ran background checks on both Gabriel and Noah, as you requested. I dug deep into their pasts, looking for any connections to the criminal organization you mentioned.”
Piper nodded, her throat tight with fear.
Mark opened the folder and pulled out a series of documents. “Let’s start with Noah,” he said. “He’s exactly what you suspected — a key player in the organization. He’s been involved for years, using his connections to stay off the radar. He wasn’t just manipulated by them, Piper — he was actively working for them.”
Piper’s heart sank, a cold chill running down her spine. She had feared this, but hearing it confirmed that it was still a gut punch. Noah had lied to her, over and over again, and now she had the proof.
“And Gabriel?” Piper asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “What about him?”
Mark hesitated, his expression grim. “Gabriel’s past is... complicated. He wasn’t directly involved with the organization the way Noah was, but he wasn’t entirely clean either. He worked for a group that had ties to the organization, doing things that were legal on paper but morally questionable. He got out years ago, but his connections are still there, whether he wants to admit it or not.”
Piper’s breath caught in her throat, her hands trembling. Gabriel had told her he had left that life behind, that he was trying to make things right, but now she wasn’t sure what to believe.
Mark continued, his voice low. “The good news is that Gabriel’s clean now — at least on the surface. But his past could come back to haunt him, and by extension, you and Lily. If the organization decides to come after him, they’ll use anyone close to him as leverage.”
Piper felt sick, her mind spinning with the weight of everything she had just learned. Noah was a direct threat — there was no doubt about that now. But Gabriel, even if he wasn’t actively involved anymore, still carried the shadow of his past with him. And that shadow could put her and Lily in even more danger.
“What do I do?” Piper asked, her voice shaking. “How do I protect Lily from all of this?”
Mark leaned back in his chair, his expression sympathetic. “You need to be smart about this, Piper. Keep your distance from both of them until you have a clear plan. Gabriel might be trying to help, but his past makes him a liability. And Noah... well, you already know he can’t be trusted.”
Piper nodded, her heart heavy. She had suspected as much, but hearing it confirmed left her feeling more lost than ever. She couldn’t afford to make any more mistakes — not when Lily’s safety was on the line.
“Thank you,” Piper said quietly, standing from the table. “I’ll be careful.”
Mark gave her a firm nod. “Take care of yourself, Piper. And if you need anything else, you know how to reach me.”
Piper left the café, her mind spinning with everything she had just learned. The wind whipped around her as she walked back to her car, her heart heavy with the weight of impossible decisions. She couldn’t trust Noah, and now, even Gabriel felt like a dangerous gamble.
And then there was Jasper.
Piper’s thoughts drifted to him as she climbed into the car. He had reached out to her, wanting to talk about “us,” but what did that even mean now? Did she still have feelings for him? Of course. She always had. But those feelings were tangled in years of hurt, trust issues, and the complications Isabel had so cleverly exploited.
As she sat behind the wheel, Piper’s phone buzzed again. Another message from Jasper.
Jasper: I can’t stop thinking about us. I need to know if there’s still a chance for us, Piper. Before it’s too late.
Piper’s heart clenched at the message. The jealousy she had been trying to suppress bubbled to the surface. Isabel had been working to drive a wedge between them, and now, Jasper was practically on the verge of slipping away.
She couldn’t let that happen.
With trembling hands, Piper typed out a reply.
Me: We need to talk. ASAP.
