Piper paced the length of the living room, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions. The day had dragged on endlessly after Gabriel’s cryptic message. She had left the park with Jasper and Lily, her mind swirling with doubts, and now the sun was setting, casting long shadows across the walls. The weight of her decision to meet Gabriel sat on her chest like a stone, but before she could confront him again, another unexpected visitor had arrived.

He stood in the doorway, his face etched with desperation, looking like a man who had been running from his own shadow for too long. Piper crossed her arms tightly across her chest, her posture stiff. She didn’t want to hear what Noah had to say. Noah flinched at the coldness in her tone, but he didn’t retreat. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes pleading with her to give him a chance. “I know I’ve made mistakes. I know I’ve hurt you, and I’ve put Lily in danger. But you have to believe me, Piper— I never wanted any of this. I never meant for things to get this bad.”

Piper’s heart tightened with anger and confusion. Noah’s shoulders sagged, the weight of his guilt visibly crushing him. “Because I don’t have a choice anymore. They’ve turned on me, Piper. They used me, just like they’ve used so many others. I was manipulated into thinking I could control the situation, that I could keep them away from Lily. But I couldn’t. And now... now they’re coming for me too.”

Piper’s heart pounded in her chest. The words felt like ice, chilling her to the bone. Noah had always been reckless, always playing with fire, but this — this was different. If what he was saying was true, if the criminal organization he was tied to had turned on him, then they were all in more danger than she had realized.

“And what do you expect me to do about that?” Piper demanded, her voice shaking. “You brought this into our lives, Noah. You put Lily at risk. I don’t care about your excuses.”

Noah’s eyes filled with pain, and for a moment, he looked like a man on the verge of breaking. “I know. I know I’ve done terrible things. But I swear, I’m trying to make it right. I’m working with people — people who want to take the organization down. But I need time, Piper. Time to get them off our backs.”

Piper shook her head, her anger bubbling to the surface. “You’ve had time, Noah. You’ve had years to fix this, and instead, you just kept lying. How can I trust anything you say now?”

Noah reached out, his hand trembling as he tried to close the distance between them. “Because I would never let anything happen to Lily. I may have made mistakes, but she’s my daughter, and I love her. I would die before I let them hurt her.”

The sincerity in his voice cut through her anger, and Piper’s chest tightened with conflicting emotions. As much as she hated to admit it, she knew there was truth in what Noah was saying. He had made terrible choices, choices that had put their daughter in harm’s way, but he did love Lily. He always had.

Piper took a step back, wrapping her arms around herself as if trying to shield herself from the turmoil swirling inside her. “I don’t know if I can forgive you, Noah. Not after everything you’ve done.”

Noah’s face crumpled with emotion, and he looked down at the floor, his voice barely a whisper. “I don’t expect you to forgive me, Piper. I just... I need you to believe that I’m trying to make things right. I know I don’t deserve your trust, but I’m begging you — please let me help.”

Piper stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She wanted to shut him out, to turn him away and never look back. But she couldn’t. No matter how much she despised what Noah had done, he was still Lily’s father. And if what he was saying was true — that he was working to take down the organization — then he might be the only chance they had at staying ahead of the danger.

But the thought of relying on Noah again, of letting him back into their lives, filled Piper with dread. He had deceived her so many times, made promises he couldn’t keep. How could she even consider giving him another chance?

“I don’t know if I can do this,” Piper whispered, her voice trembling. “I don’t know if I can trust you.”

Noah’s eyes met hers, filled with raw desperation. “I’ll prove it to you, Piper. I’ll do whatever it takes to earn your trust again. But please, don’t shut me out. Not when we’re both fighting for the same thing — Lily’s safety.”

Noah flinched at her words, but he nodded, his expression grim. “I know. I’ll keep my distance if that’s what you want. But if you ever need my help... if things get worse... I’ll be here. I’m not running anymore.”
