The Lies That Binds

Trust in the Balance

Trust in the Balance

Piper couldn’t shake the conversation with Gabriel. His confession replayed in her mind over and over again, and with each repetition, her sense of betrayal deepened. She had trusted him — believed in him when her life had been falling apart — and now she was left wondering if everything between them had been a lie.

She sat by the window, watching Lily play with her dolls in the living room. The sound of her daughter’s innocent laughter only made Piper’s heart ache more. Lily was everything to her, the reason she fought so hard to protect their fragile world. But now, with Noah’s associates closing in and the men in her life swirling in a storm of secrets and tension, Piper didn’t know who to trust anymore.

A knock on the door startled her from her thoughts. Her heart jumped, fear spiking in her chest as she instinctively moved toward the door. She paused, glancing at Lily to make sure she was safe before slowly opening it.

Jasper stood on the other side, his face drawn with worry. The lines around his eyes were more pronounced, his usual calm demeanor replaced with a heavy sense of urgency. It didn’t help that Piper was already on edge after her conversation with Gabriel. Seeing Jasper, the weight of their past hanging between them, only added to her confusion.

“I came as soon as I heard,” Jasper said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. “I ran into Gabriel earlier. He told me about... everything.”

Piper’s heart tightened. Of course Gabriel would tell Jasper. She hadn’t even had time to process it all, and now she was being pulled into yet another emotional confrontation.

“Gabriel’s past,” Jasper continued, his voice low. “I knew something was off with him. I just didn’t know it was this bad.”

Piper closed the door and leaned against it, feeling the weight of Jasper’s words. She hadn’t told him the full extent of what Gabriel had revealed — she wasn’t even sure she was ready to admit it to herself — but the fact that Jasper was here now, ready to weigh in, made it impossible to avoid.

“I don’t know what to think anymore,” Piper admitted, her voice shaky. “He’s been there for me, Jasper. He’s helped me through so much, and now... now I don’t know if I can trust him.”

Jasper’s expression softened, and he took a step closer to her, his hand brushing against her arm. “You don’t have to make any decisions right now. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. After everything with Noah, and now this... you’ve been through enough.”

Piper’s throat tightened with emotion. She could feel the warmth of Jasper’s touch, the familiarity of it wrapping around her like a blanket. There was something about Jasper that always grounded her, something that made her feel safe. But at the same time, the unresolved tension between them — tension that had been growing ever since Gabriel entered her life — made it hard for her to focus on what was right in front of her.

“I’m trying to hold it all together,” Piper whispered. “But I don’t know how much more I can take.”

Jasper’s gaze locked onto hers, and she saw the depth of his concern, the unspoken feelings that had always simmered just beneath the surface. “You’re stronger than you realize, Piper. You’ve always been strong, even when everything felt like it was falling apart.”

His words hit her deeply, but they also made her chest tighten with guilt. She had leaned on Gabriel so much over the past few months, but Jasper had been there too. He had been a steady presence in Lily’s life, a constant reminder of the past they had shared. And now, with everything spiraling out of control, she felt torn between the two men who seemed to represent different parts of her heart.

“Lily’s been asking about you,” Piper said, her voice soft. “She misses you.”

Jasper’s face softened, and for a moment, the tension between them dissolved. “I miss her too. Every day.”

Piper felt a pang of sadness as she watched the emotion flicker across his face. No matter how complicated things had become, Jasper had always been a good father. That was the one thing she couldn’t deny.

“I’m sorry I haven’t been around as much,” Jasper continued, his voice thick with regret. “With everything happening... I should’ve been more present for her. And for you.”

Piper shook her head, wiping away a stray tear. “It’s not your fault. We’ve all been trying to figure things out, and... I don’t blame you for anything.”

Jasper took another step closer, his hand gently cupping her cheek. “I’m still here, Piper. I always will be.”

Piper’s breath caught in her throat as she felt the weight of his words. She wanted to believe him — to trust that he could be the steady presence she needed. But with Gabriel’s confession hanging over her, the fear of betrayal lingered, and she wasn’t sure if she could open herself up to anyone right now.

“Jasper...” Piper started, her voice wavering. “I don’t know if I can do this.”

Jasper’s hand dropped from her cheek, and she could see the flicker of pain in his eyes. “Do what?”

Piper took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “I don’t know if I can trust anyone right now. Gabriel’s past... it’s brought up so many fears I thought I had buried. I’m scared, Jasper. Scared of what’s coming, scared of what I don’t know.”

Jasper’s expression tightened with understanding, and he stepped back, giving her the space she needed. “I get it, Piper. I really do. But you don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here, and I’ll keep being here for you, no matter what.”

Piper nodded, though the weight of everything still pressed down on her. She didn’t know how to untangle the mess her life had become. Gabriel’s revelation had shattered the fragile trust she had built with him, and now, with Jasper’s words echoing in her mind, she felt more lost than ever.

“I just need some time,” Piper said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jasper nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. “Take all the time you need.”

He moved to leave, but before he reached the door, he turned back to her, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that sent a shiver down her spine. “But remember, Piper — no matter what happens, I’ll always be here for you and Lily. You can trust that.”

With that, he walked out, leaving Piper standing alone in the living room, her heart heavy with the weight of her own emotions.

The next few days passed in a blur. Piper did everything she could to focus on Lily, throwing herself into the simple routines of their day-to-day life. But even as she tried to pretend that things were normal, the tension gnawed at her. The uncertainty about Gabriel, the unresolved feelings with Jasper, and the looming threat of Noah’s associates weighed on her like a lead blanket.

Lily was the only thing that kept her grounded. Every smile, every laugh, every moment spent with her daughter reminded Piper why she was fighting so hard. But even Lily’s innocent presence couldn’t erase the fear that lingered just beneath the surface.

Gabriel had kept his distance since their conversation. He had texted once or twice, checking in on her, but Piper hadn’t responded. She didn’t know what to say. The betrayal still stung, and she wasn’t ready to confront the complicated feelings swirling inside her.

But deep down, she knew she couldn’t avoid him forever. Gabriel had been a part of her life, and whether she wanted to admit it or not, she still cared about him. She just didn’t know if she could trust him.

It was late one evening, after Lily had gone to bed, that Piper found herself sitting alone in the kitchen, nursing a cup of tea that had long since gone cold. The house was quiet, the stillness pressing in on her like a weight. She stared at her phone, Gabriel’s last message sitting unread on the screen.

Gabriel: I’m sorry for everything, Piper. I wish I could take it back. Let me know if you want to talk. I’m here.

Piper closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as she considered her options. She could keep running from this, keep avoiding the truth, or she could confront it head-on. It was terrifying — opening herself up to more hurt, more betrayal — but she couldn’t keep living in this limbo forever.

With a shaky hand, Piper opened the message and typed a quick response.

Me: Come to my place. Tomorrow.

She hit send before she could second-guess herself, then set the phone down on the table, her heart racing. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.

The next morning, Gabriel arrived at the house, looking tired but determined. Piper met him at the door, her heart heavy with the weight of everything they needed to discuss. They stood there for a moment, the silence between them thick with tension.

“Thanks for coming,” Piper said, her voice soft.

Gabriel nodded, his eyes filled with a mix of regret and hope. “I wasn’t sure if you’d want to see me.”

Piper took a deep breath, stepping aside to let him in. “There’s a lot we need to talk about.”
