The Lies That Binds

Cracks in the Armor

Cracks in the Armor

Piper lay awake in bed, staring up at the ceiling, her mind churning with everything Jasper had told her about Isabel. It was one more layer of complication in an already tangled web of emotions and uncertainty. The last thing she needed was someone like Isabel trying to manipulate Jasper — trying to worm her way into his life under the guise of helping him with the custody battle.

But what stung more than Isabel’s interference was the realization that her feelings for Jasper were still unresolved. She had spent so long trying to keep him at arm’s length, trying to convince herself that they were over, that they had moved on. But every time he was near, every time he showed up with that worried look in his eyes, the memories came flooding back.

And now, with Gabriel in her life, the guilt of those lingering feelings weighed heavily on her.

Piper sighed, turning over to glance at the clock. It was past midnight, but sleep wouldn’t come. The conversation with Jasper had rattled her more than she wanted to admit. Not just because of Isabel, but because of what it meant for them — her and Jasper, her and Gabriel. Everything felt like it was on the verge of breaking apart.

The soft hum of her phone vibrating on the nightstand snapped her from her thoughts. She reached for it, expecting to see a message from either Gabriel or Jasper, but instead, her breath caught in her throat when she saw a name flashing on the screen.

Noah.

Her heart raced as she stared at the phone, dread pooling in her stomach. He hadn’t reached out since their last tense conversation, and Piper had been relieved for the distance. But now, seeing his name again, all the fear and uncertainty rushed back like a flood.

Piper debated whether to answer, her hand hovering over the phone. She didn’t want to hear what he had to say, but ignoring him wouldn’t make him go away. With trembling fingers, she swiped to answer.

“What do you want, Noah?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

There was a long pause on the other end of the line, followed by a deep sigh. “I want to see Lily, Piper. I don’t want to keep fighting with you. I just... I need to see my daughter.”

Piper closed her eyes, leaning back against the pillows. His voice was softer than she’d expected, almost vulnerable, but she wasn’t ready to let her guard down. “You need to stop pushing, Noah. You know things aren’t that simple.”

“I know,” Noah said, his voice cracking slightly. “But I’m not the same man I was. I’m not asking for full custody. I just want to be part of her life. I know I screwed up, but I’m trying to make it right.”

Piper’s heart ached, torn between the guilt of keeping Lily away from her father and the overwhelming need to protect her from the chaos Noah had brought into their lives. She had wanted to believe him, had wanted to trust that he had truly changed, but the stakes were too high.

“I’m sorry, Noah,” she said softly. “I can’t risk Lily’s safety. Not again.”

There was another pause, and when Noah spoke again, his voice was colder, harder. “You’re making a mistake, Piper. Keeping her from me... you’re not the only one who gets to decide what’s best for Lily.”

Piper’s chest tightened. The warmth that had been in his voice moments ago was gone, replaced by the familiar edge of Noah’s temper. She knew this version of Noah — the one who lashed out when he didn’t get his way. The one who made threats when he felt backed into a corner.

“I’m not keeping her from you,” Piper said, her voice firmer now. “I’m protecting her. You’ve given me no reason to trust you, and until that changes, things are going to stay the way they are.”

“I’m her father!” Noah snapped. “You can’t just cut me out like this.”

Piper’s pulse quickened, her hands trembling as she gripped the phone tighter. “You need to stop, Noah. If you keep pushing, I’ll have no choice but to involve the court again.”

There was a beat of silence on the other end, and then Noah’s voice dropped to a low, dangerous whisper. “You think you can control everything, don’t you? You think you can keep me away forever? You’re wrong, Piper. This isn’t over.”

The line went dead, and Piper sat frozen, her heart pounding in her chest. The threat in Noah’s voice lingered, filling the room with a suffocating sense of dread. She knew he wasn’t going to give up easily, but this was different. The coldness in his voice sent a shiver down her spine.

Piper dropped the phone onto the bed, her hands shaking as she pulled the covers up around her shoulders. She felt like the walls were closing in, like the ground beneath her feet was slipping away. Noah had always been unpredictable, but now there was something more dangerous in his tone, something that made her stomach churn with fear.

She wanted to call Gabriel, to hear his calm, reassuring voice and let him tell her everything would be okay. But even as she reached for the phone, she stopped herself. Gabriel had been so steady, so supportive, but she didn’t want to burden him with this — not now, not when things between them were already complicated.

Piper sat in the dark for a long time, her thoughts racing, her heart aching with the weight of everything. She needed to stay strong, for Lily’s sake, but the exhaustion was catching up to her. The constant battle with Noah, the unresolved feelings with Jasper and Gabriel — it was all too much.

Eventually, Piper forced herself to lie down, curling up under the blankets as she tried to block out the fear, the doubt, and the uncertainty. But even as she closed her eyes, Noah’s voice echoed in her mind, a chilling reminder that this fight was far from over.

The next morning, Piper was still haunted by the conversation with Noah. She could barely focus on getting Lily ready for school, her mind drifting back to his cold words. The threat he had made hung over her like a dark cloud, and no matter how much she tried to shake it off, she couldn’t.

After dropping Lily off, Piper headed home, her stomach twisted in knots. She couldn’t keep ignoring Noah. She needed to do something — take action before he made good on his threats. But what could she do? How could she protect Lily from a man who was determined to worm his way back into their lives?

As she parked the car in the driveway, Piper’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and saw a message from Gabriel.

Gabriel: I’m coming by later. Wanna talk.

Piper’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t know what Gabriel wanted to talk about, but the seriousness in his message made her uneasy. After the conversation they had the day before, Piper knew that things between them were at a crossroads. Gabriel had been patient, but she could sense that he was waiting for her to make a decision about them — about what their future looked like.

Piper sighed, leaning back in the driver’s seat. Everything was spiraling out of control — her emotions, her relationships, the threat of Noah looming over her life. She didn’t know how much more she could take.

Later that afternoon, Gabriel arrived as promised, his expression unreadable as he stepped into the house. Piper felt a rush of nerves as she led him into the living room, unsure of what to expect. She could feel the weight of the conversation hanging between them, thick and tense.

“I’ve been thinking about us,” Gabriel said, his voice calm but steady as he sat down across from her. “About everything we’ve been through.”

Piper’s heart raced as she sat beside him, her hands folded tightly in her lap. “I’ve been thinking about it too.”

Gabriel leaned forward, his gaze intense as he searched her face. “I need to know where we stand, Piper. I care about you — I care about you and Lily more than anything. But I need to know if this is going somewhere, or if I’m just another person caught in the middle of everything you’re dealing with.”

Piper’s throat tightened, guilt gnawing at her. She had been leaning on Gabriel for so long, but she hadn’t been fair to him. She hadn’t been honest about how conflicted she still felt. She didn’t want to hurt him, but the truth was, she didn’t know where they stood either.

“I don’t want to lose you,” Piper said, her voice shaky. “But I’m still trying to figure things out. I never meant for things to get this complicated with Jasper. And now with Noah...”

Gabriel’s expression softened, but there was a flicker of hurt in his eyes. “I get that things with Jasper are complicated. I’ve always known that. But I need to know if you’re still in love with him. Because if you are, I can’t keep doing this.”

Piper’s heart sank at the vulnerability in his voice. Gabriel had been everything she needed, but she hadn’t been fair to him. The feelings she still had for Jasper weren’t something she could ignore, but neither were her feelings for Gabriel.

“I don’t know,” Piper whispered, her voice breaking. “I don’t know what I’m feeling.”

Gabriel sat back, his jaw tight as he took in her words. The silence between them was heavy, filled with everything left unsaid.
