The Lies That Binds

The Trap Tightens

The Trap Tightens

The morning came too quickly. Piper sat in her living room, staring at her phone, nerves thrumming under her skin. They were dangerously close to exposing everything — the partnership between Noah and Isabel’s firm, the lies buried deep in the custody battle. But now, with Noah’s mask slipping, she knew they were in the most dangerous phase yet.

Lily sat at the kitchen table, humming as she scribbled in her coloring book. Piper glanced over at her daughter, a knot tightening in her stomach. The thought of Noah getting anywhere near Lily again sent a sharp pulse of fear through her, but she reminded herself:

I won’t let that happen. Not this time.

Her phone buzzed, and her pulse jumped.

Jasper: We need to meet. I’ve got more info from Isabel’s side. It’s bad.

Me: What kind of bad?

Jasper: I’ll tell you in person. Can you meet at the café in an hour?

Piper hesitated, her instincts prickling. Isabel’s firm had been playing both sides for so long, and now that the game was coming to a head, anything could happen. But if Jasper had new information, she couldn’t ignore it.

She stood, brushing Lily’s curls back gently. “Sweetie, I need to run out for a bit. Amanda’s coming to watch you, okay?”

Lily pouted, but her voice was cheerful. “Okay, Mommy.”

At the café, Piper spotted Jasper immediately. He was sitting at a corner table, looking tense, a cup of coffee untouched in front of him. The sight of him stirred something deep in her chest — familiar, bittersweet.

As Piper slid into the chair opposite him, Jasper leaned in, lowering his voice. “I just came from a meeting with Isabel.”

Piper stiffened. “And?”

Jasper’s expression darkened. “Someone high up in her firm has been feeding Noah information — leaking every move we’ve made in the custody case. That’s how Noah’s been able to stay ahead, even when it looked like we had the upper hand.”

Piper clenched her fists. “So it’s not just about the trust fund. They’re actively working against us.”

Jasper nodded grimly. “Isabel claims she didn’t know until now, but...” He trailed off, clearly conflicted.

Piper’s voice was sharp. “You believe her?”

Jasper hesitated. “I think she’s trying to fix it. But it’s clear someone in her firm wants to make sure this case doesn’t go your way.”

“Let me guess,” Piper muttered bitterly. “They want to make sure Noah stays in Lily’s life. Because that keeps me under their thumb.”

Jasper’s jaw tightened. “Exactly.”

Piper leaned back in her chair, anger bubbling beneath her skin. “We need to bring this to Amanda. Now.”

But before Jasper could respond, Piper’s phone buzzed again — a message from Gabriel.

Gabriel: We have a problem. Noah just left my building. I think he’s onto us.

Piper’s heart dropped. She looked up at Jasper, her voice steady despite the fear rising in her chest. “Noah knows.”

When Piper pulled into her driveway, her nerves were stretched tight. Gabriel’s message had shaken her. If Noah was sniffing around Gabriel’s building, it meant he knew they were closing in on him — and that made him even more dangerous.

The front door opened just as Piper stepped out of the car, and Amanda greeted her with a reassuring smile.

“Everything okay?” Amanda asked, holding the door open as Piper hurried inside.

“No,” Piper muttered, kicking off her shoes. “Noah knows we’re onto him.”

Amanda’s expression darkened. “Then we need to move fast. If we wait, he’ll have time to cover his tracks.”

Lily appeared in the doorway, her face lighting up at the sight of Piper. “Mommy! You’re back!”

Piper knelt, wrapping her arms around her daughter. For a moment, the world slowed, and everything else fell away. This was what mattered — Lily’s safety, Lily’s happiness. Nothing else.

But as Piper hugged her daughter, a sharp knock echoed through the house.

Amanda glanced at Piper, her expression turning serious. “Expecting anyone?”

Piper shook her head, dread knotting in her stomach.

She stood and made her way to the door, her heart pounding in her chest. When she opened it, her breath caught.

Noah stood on the porch, his expression a mask of forced calm. But there was something wild in his eyes — a desperate gleam that sent chills down Piper’s spine.

“Hello, Piper,” Noah said smoothly. “We need to talk.”

Piper clenched the door, blocking his entrance. “There’s nothing to talk about, Noah. Leave.”

Noah’s smile tightened. “Now, now. No need to be difficult.” He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “You’ve been busy, haven’t you? Poking around where you don’t belong.”

Piper’s skin prickled with fear, but she didn’t flinch. “You need to leave. Now.”

Noah’s expression darkened, the mask slipping for just a moment. “You think you’ve won, don’t you? You think you can take Lily from me?”

Her voice was ice. “I don’t think so, Noah. I know.

For a moment, Noah stood frozen, his hands curling into fists at his sides. Piper braced herself, ready for whatever came next.

And then, just as quickly as the anger had flashed, Noah’s smile returned — cold, calculated.

“This isn’t over,” he whispered. “Not even close.”

Without another word, he turned and walked away, disappearing down the driveway like a shadow.

That night, after Amanda left and Lily was tucked safely into bed, Piper sat at the kitchen table, her mind racing. Noah’s words echoed in her head, a haunting reminder that the storm was far from over.

The door creaked open, and Gabriel stepped inside, his expression grim. “I saw Noah leave earlier. Are you okay?”

Piper nodded, though her heart still raced. “I’m fine. But he’s not done with us.”

Gabriel pulled out a chair and sat across from her, his presence a steadying force. “He’s desperate,” he said quietly. “That makes him dangerous.”

Piper leaned forward, resting her head in her hands. “I hate this, Gabriel. I hate that no matter how hard I fight, it never feels like enough.”

Gabriel reached out, brushing his fingers lightly over her wrist. “You’re not alone, Piper. You don’t have to carry this by yourself.”

Piper looked up, her eyes meeting his. And in that moment, the weight of everything she had been holding inside came rushing to the surface.

Without thinking, she reached for Gabriel’s hand, clinging to it like a lifeline.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice cracking.

Gabriel squeezed her hand gently. “I’m here,” he murmured. “I’ve got you.”

For a long moment, they sat in silence, the storm raging outside but the air between them calm and steady.

And as Piper held Gabriel’s hand, a flicker of hope sparked in her chest.
