Beneath the Surface
Beneath the Surface
The next few days passed in a fog of tension and unease, as Piper tried to balance the competing forces in her life — protecting Lily from Noah’s manipulations, navigating Jasper’s emotional distance, and grappling with Gabriel’s growing presence. It felt like she was playing a game of chess on three different boards at once, with no clear path to victory.
And now, Isabel’s firm was officially a problem. If someone within her circle was working against Piper, funding Noah’s fight for control, she was running out of time to get ahead of it. But what scared Piper most wasn’t Isabel’s involvement — it was how easy it was for Jasper to rationalize her presence.
The question that gnawed at Piper was: Why was Jasper so willing to trust Isabel?
And why was she starting to trust Gabriel, a man who had just walked into her life and yet felt like the only person standing firmly in her corner?
That afternoon, Piper sat on the living room floor with Lily, who was busy setting up an elaborate tea party for her stuffed animals. Watching her daughter’s carefree joy was the only thing keeping Piper sane these days.
“More tea, Mommy?” Lily asked, offering a plastic teacup with both hands.
“Absolutely,” Piper replied, forcing a smile as she accepted the imaginary tea.
Lily beamed, her little face glowing with happiness. “Bunny says the cookies are ready, too!”
Piper laughed, though her heart felt heavy. These simple moments — Lily’s joy, her imagination — were the things Noah didn’t understand. He saw their daughter as a possession, something to win, not a little person with her own dreams and quirks.
Just as Piper started to relax, her phone buzzed. A glance at the screen made her heart sink — it was Noah. Again.
She ignored the call, but the sense of dread lingered like a storm cloud on the horizon. He wasn’t going to stop until he got what he wanted. And with the unknown forces working behind him, she knew she had to stay a step ahead.
Later that evening, after Lily had fallen asleep, Piper sat at the kitchen table, scrolling through her phone as the weight of the day pressed down on her. She felt like she was walking through a minefield, waiting for something — or someone — to explode.
Just as she was about to call it a night, her phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn’t Noah. It was Gabriel.
Gabriel: I have something you need to see. Can I come by?
Piper hesitated for a moment, her thumb hovering over the screen. Letting Gabriel deeper into her life felt dangerous, but keeping him at arm’s length felt worse.
Me: Okay. Come over.
Twenty minutes later, Gabriel arrived, dressed in his usual dark jacket, his expression calm but focused. Piper opened the door for him, stepping aside as he entered the house with the same quiet grace she was beginning to associate with him.
“I found something,” Gabriel said, wasting no time as he pulled a folder from his jacket. “I think you’ll want to see this.”
They sat at the kitchen table, the air between them charged with unspoken tension. Gabriel opened the folder, revealing a series of documents — bank statements, legal memos, and what looked like internal correspondence from Isabel’s firm.
Piper’s stomach churned as she scanned the pages. “What is all this?”
“It’s proof,” Gabriel said quietly. “Someone inside Isabel’s firm has been funneling money to Noah. They’re not just backing him — they’re manipulating the entire custody case from the shadows.”
Piper’s heart raced as she flipped through the documents, each piece of evidence more damning than the last. “How did you get this?”
Gabriel’s expression remained calm, but there was a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. “I have... sources. People who owe me favors.”
Piper leaned back in her chair, her mind reeling. “This is huge, Gabriel. If we bring this to the judge —”
“We have to be careful,” Gabriel interrupted, his voice steady but firm. “If we move too quickly, they’ll bury the evidence before we can make a case.”
Piper exhaled slowly, rubbing her temples. “So what do we do?”
“We need leverage,” Gabriel said, his gaze intense. “Something that forces them to back off — something they can’t afford to ignore.”
Piper nodded, though her mind raced with doubts. The idea of playing a high-stakes game with people this powerful terrified her, but what choice did she have? If she didn’t act, Noah would win.
And if Noah won, she would lose everything.
After they finished going over the documents, Gabriel stood to leave, but Piper stopped him at the door.
“Gabriel,” she said softly, her heart pounding in her chest. “Why are you doing this? Why are you helping me?”
Gabriel’s expression softened, and for a moment, Piper thought she saw a flicker of vulnerability in his dark eyes. “Because I’ve been where you are,” he admitted quietly. “And I know what it’s like to feel trapped.”
Piper’s breath caught in her throat. It was the most personal thing Gabriel had ever shared with her, and it hit her harder than she expected.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “For everything.”
Gabriel gave her a small, lopsided smile. “I told you, Piper. I’m not going anywhere.”
And as he walked away into the night, Piper knew — deep down — that she believed him.
The next morning, Piper woke with a renewed sense of purpose. Gabriel’s revelations had given her the leverage she needed, and now it was time to act.
She called Amanda first thing, filling her in on everything Gabriel had uncovered. Amanda listened carefully, her tone serious but hopeful. “This could change everything, Piper,” she said. “If we play this right, we can shut Noah down for good.”
