The Lies That Binds

Preparing for Battle

Preparing for Battle

Piper left Amanda’s office with a renewed sense of determination, but also a simmering rage she couldn’t quite shake. Knowing that Noah had someone secretly funding his custody battle filled her with equal parts anger and fear. Whoever was behind the trust fund had influence — someone with the power and resources to back Noah’s every move.

But Piper wasn’t going to let that stop her. She would fight for Lily with everything she had.

As she drove home, her mind raced, thinking about how to confront Noah. It wasn’t just about winning custody — it was about uncovering the truth before it was too late. And part of her knew that she would need more than just Amanda’s sharp legal mind on her side.

She needed Jasper.

That evening, Piper sat at her kitchen table, the envelope containing Lily’s birth certificate still resting next to her from earlier. She turned it over in her hands, feeling the weight of the past pressing down on her.

She knew she had to call Jasper, but the thought of it made her chest tighten. Their relationship had become a minefield — full of unresolved emotions, jealousy, and hurt. And Isabel’s constant presence only complicated things further.

But this wasn’t about them anymore. This was about Lily.

Piper grabbed her phone and scrolled to Jasper’s number, hitting the call before she could second-guess herself.

He picked up on the first ring. “Piper? Is everything okay?”

“We need to talk,” Piper said, her voice steadier than she felt. “Can you come over?”

Jasper hesitated for a moment, then exhaled. “Yeah. I’ll be there at about 3:00.”

When Jasper arrived, he looked tired — his hair slightly disheveled, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up. Piper opened the door and motioned for him to come in, trying to ignore the flutter in her chest at the sight of him.

“What’s going on?” Jasper asked, stepping into the living room.

Piper crossed her arms, leaning against the back of the couch. “Amanda found something. Noah’s custody case is being funded by an anonymous trust.”

Jasper’s brows furrowed, confusion flickering across his face. “A trust? Who would do that?”

“That’s what we need to figure out,” Piper said. “If we can prove that whoever’s behind the money is manipulating Noah, it could change everything. But we need to move fast — before he finds a way to cover it up.”

Jasper rubbed the back of his neck, a gesture that was becoming all too familiar. “Okay. What do you need me to do?”

Piper hesitated for a moment, choosing her words carefully. “We need your testimony. The judge trusts you, Jasper. If you tell the court that you have concerns about Noah’s motives, it could sway things in our favor.”

Jasper’s jaw tightened, his storm-gray eyes flickering with uncertainty. “I don’t know, Piper. I’ve been trying to stay neutral in all of this — for Lily’s sake.”

Piper felt her frustration rise, but she forced herself to stay calm. “This is for Lily’s sake, Jasper. Can’t you see that? If Noah’s being controlled by someone else, we need to stop him. She’s our daughter.”

Jasper exhaled slowly, his gaze dropping to the floor. “I’ll testify,” he said quietly. “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her.”

Relief flooded Piper’s chest, but it was accompanied by a familiar ache — the painful realization that Jasper wasn’t fighting for her, but for Lily.

And maybe that had to be enough.

The next morning, Piper sat down with Amanda in her office to finalize their strategy. The plan was to present the evidence about Noah’s mysterious trust at the upcoming hearing and argue that his bid for custody was compromised by outside influence.

“The judge is going to want concrete proof,” Amanda warned, tapping her pen against the table. “We need to show that this isn’t just a theory — that someone is actively working behind the scenes to sway this case.”

Piper nodded, though her nerves hummed with anxiety. “And you’re sure Jasper’s testimony will help?”

“It will,” Amanda assured her. “The judge knows that Jasper isn’t easily swayed. If he expresses concerns about Noah’s motivations, it could tip the scales in our favor.”

Piper exhaled slowly, trying to push down the weight of doubt that still clung to her. She knew they were running out of time, and the stakes had never been higher.

As Amanda gathered the papers and closed the file, she gave Piper a small, reassuring smile. “We’ve got this, Piper. Just hold on a little longer.”

That evening, as Piper sat on the couch scrolling through old photos of Lily on her phone, her mind drifted back to the way things used to be. Before Noah had shown up, before the custody battle, before everything had fallen apart with Jasper.

There were photos of the three of them — her, Jasper, and Lily — sitting on the beach, eating ice cream at the park, laughing together at family dinners. It felt like another lifetime, a life that had slipped through her fingers before she even realized it was gone.

Her phone buzzed with a new message, pulling her back to the present. It was Jasper.

Jasper: Can we talk?

Piper’s pulse quickened.

Me: Is everything okay?

Jasper: I just need to see you. Please.

Piper stared at the message for a moment, her heart pounding in her chest. Part of her wanted to say no, to keep the distance between them that had become a painful but necessary buffer. But another part of her — a part she couldn’t quite silence — wanted to see him, to hear his voice, to remember what it felt like to have him close.

She typed back a quick reply.

Me: Come over.

When Jasper arrived, there was something different about him — something heavier. He stood on the porch for a moment before stepping inside, his expression guarded.

“What’s going on?” Piper asked softly, sensing the tension radiating from him.

Jasper ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. “I think... I think we need to talk about Isabel.”

The mention of her name sent a jolt of anger through Piper’s chest, but she forced herself to stay calm. “What about her?”

Jasper hesitated, his gaze flickering between Piper and the floor. “She’s been helping me a lot through this. And... I think she has feelings for me.”

Piper’s heart twisted painfully, though she tried to keep her expression neutral. “And what about you?”

Jasper sighed, leaning against the wall. “I don’t know. I’ve been trying to sort through everything — what I feel, what I want... but everything’s so complicated.”

Piper crossed her arms, swallowing the lump rising in her throat. “So where does that leave us, Jasper?”

He looked up at her, his storm-gray eyes filled with regret. “I don’t know,” he admitted quietly. “But I know that I don’t want to lose you — not as Lily’s mom, and not as...” He trailed off, the words hanging in the air between them.

Piper’s heart ached, torn between the past and the present, between the life they had and the one that felt like it was slipping away.

“We can’t keep doing this, Jasper,” she whispered. “We can’t keep living in limbo.”

“I know,” he murmured. “But I don’t know how to fix it.”

For a long moment, they stood in silence, the weight of their shared history pressing down on them. And for the first time, Piper realized that maybe there were no easy answers — only the messy, complicated truth of two people trying to find their way through the wreckage.
