The Lies That Binds

Chapter 191

Chapter 191

The hospital's private wing hummed with quiet activity. Piper stood at Jasper's bedside, watching monitors track his vital signs. Surgery had removed the shrapnel, but he remained unconscious, tubes and wires mapping his survival.

"Security sweep is complete," Gabriel said softly, entering the room. "No other devices found."

"The pendant?"

"Being analyzed. Preliminary results confirm it's authentic Chen family jewelry."

Piper touched Jasper's hand, careful of the IV lines. "And the photo?"

"No prints except Jasper's and the attacker's. But it's genuine - dating puts it at about thirty years ago."

The image was seared into her memory now. Two children, a garden party, a life she couldn't remember.

Her phone buzzed - Mr. Tan requesting an urgent meeting.

"Go," Gabriel urged. "I'll stay with him."

The Golden Palace Restaurant was quiet at this hour. Mr. Tan waited in the same private room, but this time he wasn't alone. Five other men sat with him, each representing a different faction of Singapore's old guard.

"Mrs. Chen-Blackwood." Mr. Tan gestured to a seat. "We heard about the attack."

"News travels fast."

"In Singapore, everything travels fast." The eldest guest spoke - Mr. Wong, whose family controlled half the city's shipping. "Especially violence against a prominent new arrival."

"We don't want blood in our streets," another man said. "Bad for business."

Piper studied their faces. Decades of power sat at this table, influence that went beyond legitimate business.

"What are you offering?"

"Protection," Mr. Tan said simply. "Our influence can... discourage further attacks."

"At what price?"

"Smart girl." Mr. Wong smiled slightly. "Your mother taught you well."

"My mother taught me to read the fine print."

"Twenty percent," a third man said. "Of your Malaysian operations. Once they're rebuilt."

"Ten," Piper countered. "And you handle the Chen family permanently."

"Fifteen," Mr. Wong said. "And we ensure no one touches your family again. Including your brother."

Piper's hand stilled on her teacup. "You know about him?"

"We remember when he disappeared. When your mother erased him." Mr. Tan's eyes were sharp. "We also know he's back. Working with the Chens."

"Why?"

"Revenge is a powerful motivator," Mr. Wong said softly. "Especially for a child who was sacrificed for his sister's safety."

Piper's phone lit up - Noah calling. She ignored it.

"What exactly are you proposing?"

Mr. Tan slid a document across the table. "A partnership. Our protection, our influence. Your operations continue uninterrupted."

"And my brother?"

"Will be... discouraged from further action."

The phone buzzed again. Noah.

"I need time to consider-"

"Time is a luxury you don't have," Mr. Wong cut in. "The Chens move quickly. Your brother moves quicker."

A third call from Noah. Something was wrong.

"Excuse me." Piper stepped away from the table, answering. "What is it?"

Noah's voice was tight with tension. "Security breach at Lily's school. Multiple alarms triggered."

The world stopped.

"James?"

"Safe at the tower with me. But Piper - facial recognition caught someone matching your brother's description near the school."

She was moving before he finished speaking.

"Mrs. Chen-Blackwood?" Mr. Tan called after her.

"Send the contracts to my office," she said, already running. "You have a deal."

Her security detail fell in around her as she reached the street. Gabriel was already on the line.

"Two teams en route to the school," he reported. "No confirmation of entry yet."

"How long?"

"Three minutes out. Piper - there's something else. Your mother just landed in Singapore."

Of course she had. The game was reaching its climax.

The drive to the school took forever, even with police escort. Piper's phone exploded with updates:

"All students accounted for in safe rooms."

"Perimeter breach on east side."

"Unknown male spotted in administration wing."

Then: "Lily is secure with the protection team."

Relief made her dizzy.

Finally: "Suspect cornered in library."

They reached the school as Gabriel's teams surrounded the building. Parents gathered behind police lines, watching anxiously.

"Lily?" Piper demanded.

"Here, Mom." Her daughter's voice came through Gabriel's radio. "I'm okay. But Mom - it's him. The man from the photo."

The brother she couldn't remember. Here for what? Revenge? Reconciliation?

Another message lit up her phone:

"Choose, sister. Family or empire? Mother's coming to collect her dues. Time to decide which blood matters more."

Inside the school, alarms still blared.

Her brother waited.

And somewhere over the South China Sea, Margaret Blackwood was coming to finish what she'd started thirty years ago.

The old guard's protection would come too late for this confrontation.

Some debts could only be paid in person.

Through the school's gates, Piper caught a glimpse of a man watching. Her eyes, her smile, thirty years of separation between them.

He raised his hand in greeting.

The Phoenix, coming home to roost.
