The Lies That Binds

Chapter 185

Chapter 185

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows through Le Meridien's windows, turning the private dining room into a maze of light and shadow. Piper stood before a mirror, adjusting her blazer. The designer suit that had fit perfectly before her pregnancy now hung loose, another reminder of how quickly everything had changed.

Her reflection showed more than just ill-fitting clothes - dark circles under her eyes, tension in her jaw. She shouldn't even be out of the hospital. Her cesarean incision throbbed with every movement.

Gabriel appeared behind her, his presence solid and reassuring. "Security team's all in position. I've got six men on the perimeter, four inside."

"Noah?"

"Running surveillance from the van. He's got eyes on every entrance and exit." Gabriel touched her elbow. "Still time to call this off."

Piper shook her head, checking her phone. "Any update on Lily?"

"Safe. I moved her and Jasper to the mountain house. Your father's with them, plus a full security detail."

"Victor won't know about that location?"

"It's not in any company records. Complete blackout protocols in effect."

The dining room door opened. Victor Chen entered with the confident stride of a man used to controlling every room he walked into. His charcoal suit probably cost more than most people's cars. Two men in black followed, taking positions by the door - not even pretending to be anything but muscle.

"Ms. Blackwood." Victor's smile was practiced, perfect, and completely false. "You're looking remarkably well for someone who just gave birth. Motherhood suits you."

Piper remained seated, one hand resting casually on the table to hide its trembling. "Let's skip the pleasantries, Victor. Why are you threatening my family?"

"So direct." He took the chair across from her, his movements deliberately slow and controlled. "I always admired that about you. So unlike your mother." He opened a leather portfolio, spreading documents across the table. "I have a proposition that could benefit us both."

"One that involves my mother?" Piper kept her voice neutral, watching his reaction.

His smile flickered, just slightly. "Margaret and I share certain... interests. Including your company's future."

"You mean my inheritance."

"Ah." Victor leaned back, studying her. "James told you about the trust. Good. That simplifies our discussion considerably."

A waiter appeared, silent and efficient, placing water glasses on the table. Piper waited until he disappeared before speaking again.

"What exactly do you want, Victor?"

"A partnership." He gestured to the documents between them. "Your properties in Asia combined with my connections - we could dominate the entire market. No one could touch us."

"And Jasper's investigation?"

"Could disappear overnight." Victor spread his hands in a practiced gesture of benevolence. "The right words to the right people. Your ex-husband walks free, your company's reputation intact. Everyone wins."

Gabriel shifted slightly beside her. A warning. They'd discussed this possibility - Victor offering what seemed like an easy way out.

"In exchange for what?" Piper asked, though she already knew the answer.

"Fifty-one percent of the inheritance. Once it transfers next month." Victor smiled again. "A small price for peace of mind."

"No."

The single word hung in the air between them. Victor's expression hardened, the mask of civility slipping.

"Consider carefully, Piper. Jasper's preliminary hearing-"

"Is already handled." She pulled out her phone, tapping the screen. Victor's voice filled the room, discussing payoffs to prosecutors in explicit detail.

His face went still, all pretense of warmth vanishing. "Where did you get that?"

"Does it matter? Touch my family again, and this goes public. We both know what that would do to your carefully built empire."

"You're bluffing."

"Try me." Piper stood, forcing herself not to sway as pain shot through her abdomen. "We're done here."

She turned to leave, Gabriel moving with her. Victor's next words stopped her cold.

"Margaret said you'd be difficult. Just like your father." He sighed theatrically. "Plan B, then."

The doors opened again. Sarah walked in, looking small and broken. Sarah - who'd been Piper's assistant for five years, who'd held her hand through the divorce, who'd watched Lily grow up.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, not meeting Piper's eyes. "They have my daughter."

She handed Victor a flash drive with trembling fingers.

"What is that?" Piper demanded, though her heart was already sinking.

"Everything." Sarah's voice cracked. "Server access, account numbers, private files. Everything you told me to protect."

Victor pocketed the drive, satisfaction radiating from every pore. "Now, about that partnership..."

Gabriel moved toward the door, but Victor's men stepped forward, hands moving deliberately toward their jackets.

"Your mother sends her love," Victor said softly. "She always knew you'd need... guidance. Shall we discuss terms?"

Piper's phone buzzed in her hand. Noah's message made her blood run cold: "Company servers breached. It's bad. Get out now."

But Victor's men weren't moving. And Sarah - loyal, trusted Sarah - had just handed over the keys to her kingdom.

The betrayal burned worse than her cesarean scar, an acid eating through her chest.

Victor pulled out one final photo, sliding it across the table. Margaret Blackwood sat with Richard Hawthorne, both of them smiling at the camera. The timestamp showed yesterday.

"Family dinner tomorrow?" Victor's voice dripped with false concern. "Margaret's cooking. She makes an excellent roast, I'm told. Time for the whole family to... reconnect."

The photo blurred slightly as Piper stared at it. Her mother - who'd taught her to be strong, to never show weakness. Who'd apparently been plotting her downfall all along.

The pain in her abdomen was getting worse. She shouldn't have left the hospital. Shouldn't have trusted so many people who'd turned out to be wolves in sheep's clothing.

But she couldn't fall apart. Not now. Not with so much at stake.

Sarah wouldn't meet her eyes. Victor's men blocked the exits. And somewhere in the city, her newborn son lay in a hospital nursery, unaware that his whole world was being rewritten by betrayal and greed.

The game had changed. And Piper was running out of moves.
