The Lies That Binds

Chapter 167

Chapter 167

The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a golden glow over Lily’s crib. Piper stood over her daughter, her fingers lightly grazing the soft edge of the blanket that swaddled the tiny, peaceful form. A fierce determination burned in her chest as she watched Lily sleep.

She couldn’t allow the past to touch her daughter’s future.

Nick’s message had shattered any illusion that they could find peace without action. The time for waiting was over; it was time to eliminate the threat once and for all.

Piper turned and left the nursery, her steps purposeful as she made her way to the living room, where Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah were waiting. The air was heavy with anticipation, the tension palpable as they each looked to her for direction.

“We need to finish this,” Piper said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.

Gabriel nodded, his expression hard. “We’re with you.”

“What’s the plan?” Jasper asked, his arms crossed but his tone devoid of the usual edge.

Piper took a deep breath. “We’re going to make sure Nick can’t touch us—legally or otherwise. Noah, I need you to dig into his financials, his records, anything that ties him to criminal activity. If we can expose him, we’ll have leverage.”

Noah nodded, already pulling out his laptop. “Consider it done.”

“Jasper,” Piper continued, her gaze shifting. “You’ve got connections that Nick won’t see coming. I need you to find out who he’s working with, who’s helping him stay under the radar.”

Jasper smirked faintly, the hint of a challenge lighting his eyes. “I can handle that.”

“And Gabriel,” Piper said, turning to him. “You’re the one I trust to watch over Lily and me. If things go sideways...”

“They won’t,” Gabriel interrupted firmly. “But I’ve got you.”

Piper’s heart swelled with gratitude, but she couldn’t afford to dwell on it. There was too much at stake.

The days that followed were a blur of activity. Noah worked tirelessly, uncovering a web of offshore accounts and illicit deals that painted a damning picture of Nick’s operations. Jasper’s street connections led them to a handful of Nick’s associates, each one more eager than the last to sell him out in exchange for leniency.

Gabriel reinforced the house’s security, ensuring every window and door was protected. He also coordinated with a private security firm to add an extra layer of protection for Lily, a decision that gave Piper a small sense of relief.

But even as they moved forward, the strain began to take its toll.

One evening, Piper sat at the kitchen table with Gabriel, exhaustion etched into every line of her face. “Do you think we’re doing the right thing?” she asked quietly.

Gabriel placed his hand over hers, his touch grounding. “We don’t have a choice, Piper. Protecting Lily is the only thing that matters.”

She nodded, though the weight of their decisions pressed heavily on her chest.

It was Noah who finally uncovered the smoking gun—a series of transactions that tied Nick to a prominent figure in organized crime. Piper stared at the evidence on Noah’s screen, her stomach twisting.

“This is it,” she said, her voice quiet but resolute. “This is how we bring him down.”

But exposing Nick wasn’t enough. Piper knew he wouldn’t go quietly, which meant she had to be prepared for whatever came next.

The confrontation happened in a way Piper hadn’t expected.

Jasper’s intel led them to an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town, where Nick was supposed to be meeting one of his partners. Gabriel insisted on accompanying her, while Jasper and Noah stayed behind to monitor the situation from a safe distance.

As Piper and Gabriel approached the warehouse, the tension between them crackled like a live wire. Gabriel glanced at her, his hand brushing against her arm.

“Are you sure about this?” he asked.

“No,” Piper admitted. “But it has to end here.”

They stepped inside the warehouse, the dim light casting long shadows over the empty space. Nick stood near the center, flanked by two men with hard expressions and sharp eyes.

“Well, well,” Nick said, his voice dripping with mockery. “If it isn’t the fearless Piper Blackwood. Come to finish what you started?”

“I’m here to end this,” Piper said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her chest.

Nick’s smile twisted into something darker. “You think you can just walk in here and dictate terms? You don’t know what you’re playing with, Piper.”

“Neither do you,” Gabriel said, stepping forward, his voice cold and commanding.

The tension in the room thickened as Nick’s men shifted, their hands hovering near their weapons. Piper’s heart pounded, but she kept her focus on Nick.

“You’ve lost,” she said, holding up a folder containing the evidence Noah had uncovered. “We have everything we need to take you down. Walk away now, and you might still have something left.”

Nick’s smile faltered, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a sneer.

“You don’t have the guts,” he said.

Before Piper could respond, one of Nick’s men lunged forward, drawing a weapon. Gabriel moved instantly, disarming him with swift precision as chaos erupted around them.

Piper ducked behind a stack of crates, her breath coming in shallow gasps as the sounds of a struggle filled the air. She peeked out to see Gabriel taking on the second man, his movements sharp and efficient.

Nick, meanwhile, made a break for the exit. Piper’s adrenaline surged as she pushed herself to her feet and followed him, her determination overriding her fear.

“Nick!” she called, her voice echoing through the space.

He stopped at the door, turning to face her with a cold, calculating look. “You should’ve stayed out of this, Piper.”

“No,” she said, her voice steady. “You should’ve.”

Before Nick could respond, Gabriel appeared behind him, his expression deadly. Nick froze, his bravado crumbling as he realized he was out of options.

“You’re done,” Gabriel said coldly.

By the time the authorities arrived, the warehouse was silent. Nick was taken into custody, his threats finally neutralized. Piper stood outside, the cool night air washing over her as she cradled Lily in her arms.

Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah gathered around her, their expressions a mix of relief and exhaustion. For the first time in weeks, Piper felt a flicker of hope.

But as she gazed down at her daughter, she knew their fight wasn’t over. The scars of the past ran deep, and the road ahead was uncertain.
