Unrelenting Shadows
Unrelenting Shadows
Piper woke with a start, the sound of rain tapping against her window pulling her from a restless sleep. The weight of the previous night clung to her like a thick fog, leaving her nerves raw and exposed. She rolled over, her mind immediately going to Gabriel, Jasper, and the looming threat of Dante. No matter how much she tried to shake it, Dante’s voice — the smooth, cold threat he’d delivered over the phone — was burned into her memory. She shivered involuntarily at the thought of him lurking somewhere in the shadows.
Glancing at the clock on her nightstand, she saw that it was still early, barely six in the morning. The house was quiet, too quiet for the chaos that lingered just beyond the safety of her walls. She swung her legs over the side of the bed and padded barefoot to the window, pulling the curtain aside just enough to peer outside. The street was empty, the rain-soaked pavement glistening under the glow of the streetlamps. Everything seemed peaceful, but Piper knew better than to trust appearances.
Downstairs, the low murmur of voices filtered through the silence, reminding her that she wasn’t alone. Jasper had stayed the night, taking shifts with Gabriel to keep watch. They had both been so tense, their rivalry bubbling just beneath the surface, but they had kept their focus on protecting her and Lily. Still, Piper couldn’t ignore the emotional tension brewing between the two men, and she dreaded what might happen if they couldn’t put their personal feelings aside.
With a sigh, Piper pulled on a sweater and made her way downstairs. The house felt heavy, the air thick with unspoken words and lingering danger. As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she found Gabriel standing by the front window, his arms crossed as he watched the rain. Jasper sat at the kitchen table, a mug of coffee in his hands, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep.
Gabriel glanced over his shoulder as she entered the room, his expression softening when he saw her. “Morning,” he said quietly.
Piper offered a tired smile. “Morning.”
Jasper looked up from his coffee, his gaze locking onto hers. “Do you sleep at all?”
“Not much,” Piper admitted, moving toward the kitchen. “I can’t stop thinking about Dante.”
Gabriel tensed at the mention of Dante’s name, his jaw clenching. “We’ll deal with him,” he said, his voice low. “I won’t let him hurt you.”
Piper appreciated the sentiment, but the truth was, she wasn’t sure if Gabriel could make good on that promise. Dante wasn’t like Victor — he wasn’t reckless or prone to making mistakes. He was calculated, methodical, and far more dangerous. And that scared her more than she cared to admit.
She poured herself a cup of coffee, her hands trembling slightly as she added cream. “What’s the plan?” she asked, turning to face both men. “We can’t just sit around waiting for him to strike.”
Gabriel’s gaze met hers, his eyes dark and intense. “I’ve already reached out to some contacts. We’ll track him down before he can get too close.”
Piper bit her lip, a wave of frustration washing over her. “What if he’s already close? What if he’s watching us right now? We can’t keep living like this — constantly looking over our shoulders, waiting for him to make his move.”
Jasper stood, setting his mug down on the table with a thud. “She’s right. We need to go on the offensive. Sitting around waiting isn’t going to help anyone.”
Gabriel’s jaw tightened, the tension between him and Jasper palpable. “I’m doing everything I can,” he said through gritted teeth. “But Dante’s not an idiot. He’ll strike when he’s ready, and we need to be prepared.”
Piper’s stomach churned at the thought of Dante lying in wait, watching them, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. She didn’t want to feel helpless, didn’t want to rely solely on Gabriel and Jasper to protect her. But what could she do? She wasn’t trained for this kind of life — she wasn’t a fighter. She was a mother trying to keep her daughter safe.
“I’m going to take a shower,” Piper said abruptly, needing a moment to clear her head. She turned to leave the kitchen but paused at the doorway, glancing back at the two men who had become such integral parts of her life. “Please don’t fight,” she added softly before disappearing up the stairs.
As soon as she reached her bedroom, Piper locked the door and leaned against it, her heart racing. She could feel the weight of everything pressing down on her—Dante’s threat, her unresolved feelings for Gabriel and Jasper, the uncertainty of what lay ahead. It was all too much.
Stepping into the bathroom, Piper turned on the shower, letting the steam rise as she undressed. The sound of the water hitting the tiles was soothing, and for a moment, she allowed herself to imagine that everything was normal, that her life hadn’t been turned upside down by danger and deceit.
But reality was never far behind.
As the hot water cascaded over her skin, Piper’s mind drifted to Gabriel. She had tried to push him away, to keep her distance after everything that had happened, but she couldn’t deny the pull she still felt toward him. He had been there for her through so much — protecting her, risking his life to keep her and Lily safe. And yet, his past continued to haunt them, to drag them both into the darkness.
And then there was Jasper. Steady, reliable Jasper, who had been in her life for so long. She had loved him once, deeply, and part of her still did. But their relationship had been fractured by lies, by his betrayal with Isabel, and now she didn’t know if they could ever truly go back to what they had once been.
Piper scrubbed her hands over her face, trying to clear her thoughts. She couldn’t afford to get caught up in the emotional turmoil of her love life right now — not with Dante still out there, waiting for his chance to strike. She needed to stay focused, to protect Lily above all else.
As she stepped out of the shower and wrapped herself in a towel, a sudden knock on the door made her jump. Her heart raced as she quickly pulled on her clothes, her mind flashing to the worst-case scenario. Was it Dante? Had he already found a way in?
“Piper, it’s me,” Gabriel’s voice came through the door, calm but urgent.
Relief washed over her, and she unlocked the door, opening it to find Gabriel standing there, his face tense with worry.
“What’s wrong?” Piper asked, her pulse still racing from the sudden knock.
Gabriel stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. “I just got word from one of my contacts. Dante’s on the move.”
Piper’s stomach dropped. “Where is he?”
Gabriel ran a hand through his hair, his jaw clenched. “He’s been spotted about fifty miles from here. He’s not coming alone.”
Fear shot through Piper like a bolt of electricity. “What do you mean he’s not alone? Who’s with him?”
“A few men, probably hired guns,” Gabriel explained. “Dante never liked to get his hands dirty. He’ll send them first, soften us up before he makes his move.”
Piper’s breath came faster, her hands trembling as she tried to process what Gabriel was saying. This wasn’t just about Dante anymore. This was an all-out assault, and they were running out of time.
“We need to leave,” Piper said suddenly, her voice shaking. “We need to get out of here before they find us.”
But Gabriel shook his head, stepping closer to her. “If we run, we’ll be playing right into his hands. He’ll track us down, and we’ll be even more vulnerable. We need to stay, Piper. We need to fight.”
Piper’s heart pounded in her chest as she stared up at Gabriel, torn between fear and the deep trust she had in him. He had never steered her wrong before, but the idea of staying here — of facing Dante and his men head-on—was terrifying.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Gabriel’s eyes softened, and he reached out, gently cupping her face in his hands. “You’re stronger than you think, Piper. You’ve been through hell and back, and you’re still standing. We’ll get through this. Together.”
Piper’s heart ached at the tenderness in his touch, the unspoken promise of protection in his words. She wanted to believe him, to trust that they would come out of this alive. But the fear gnawing at her insides wouldn’t let go.
She nodded slowly, though the fear still lingered. “Okay. We’ll stay.”
Gabriel gave her a small, reassuring smile before pulling her into his arms, holding her tightly. For a moment, Piper allowed herself to lean into him, to take comfort in the strength of his embrace. But even as they stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time.
Dante was coming.
And this time, there might be no escape.
