Ties That Bind
Ties That Bind
The tension between Piper, Gabriel, and Jasper had been palpable for weeks, simmering just below the surface, and after the chaos with Victor, it felt like a dam was about to break. Piper could feel the weight of it as they all arrived back at her house, the silence thick with unsaid words and unresolved feelings.
Lily, blissfully unaware of the emotional storm swirling around her mother, had fallen asleep in the car, her small body slumped in the backseat. Piper gently unbuckled her, lifting her carefully into her arms. She was grateful for Lily’s innocence — for the way her daughter could still sleep soundly, even as the world around them threatened to tear apart at the seams.
Jasper was the first to approach as Piper carried Lily into the house, his eyes dark and conflicted. “Do you need any help?” he asked, his voice quieter than usual.
Piper shook her head, though she offered him a brief, grateful smile. “I’ve got her.”
Jasper nodded, though his gaze lingered on Piper for a moment longer before he turned away. There was something in his eyes — something heavy with regret and longing — that made Piper’s heart twist.
As she laid Lily down in her bed, tucking the blankets up around her, Piper’s thoughts spun wildly. The confrontation with Victor had left her rattled, but it wasn’t just the danger that had shaken her — it was the unresolved emotions that had been building between her, Gabriel, and Jasper. She knew that she couldn’t keep avoiding the choices that were laid out in front of her. Not forever.
But the looming threat of Victor’s world was still hanging over them, casting a shadow on everything. Even with him locked away, Piper felt the weight of Gabriel’s past pressing down on them, a constant reminder that peace was fleeting and fragile.
After settling Lily, Piper walked back downstairs, where Gabriel and Jasper were waiting in the living room. The air was thick with tension, and for a moment, none of them spoke. Piper could feel the unspoken words hanging between them, as if each of them was waiting for the other to break the silence.
Finally, it was Gabriel who spoke first. His voice was quiet but filled with an undercurrent of emotion. “We need to talk.”
Piper swallowed, her throat tight as she met Gabriel’s gaze. She knew he was right — they did need to talk, but part of her was terrified of what would happen once the truth came out. Still, she couldn’t keep running from it.
“Let’s sit,” she said softly, motioning to the couch.
Gabriel and Jasper exchanged a glance before they sat down across from each other, their tension palpable even in their silence. Piper took a seat in an armchair nearby, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She could feel her pulse racing, her mind spinning as she tried to figure out where to start.
“I know things have been… complicated,” Piper began, her voice hesitant. “Between all of us.”
Gabriel’s jaw tightened slightly, but he nodded. “Yeah. Complicated is one word for it.”
Jasper’s gaze flicked to Gabriel, his expression unreadable. “We need to figure this out, Piper. You can’t keep pushing us all away.”
The bluntness of Jasper’s words hit her like a punch to the chest. He wasn’t wrong — she had been pushing them away, afraid of the emotions swirling inside her. But hearing him say it so plainly made the reality of it sink in.
“I’m not trying to push anyone away,” Piper said quietly, her eyes darting between them. “I just… I need time to figure out how I feel.”
Gabriel leaned forward, his dark eyes searching hers. “I get that, Piper. I do. But we’re running out of time. Victor’s gone, but the people he’s connected to — they’re still out there. We can’t pretend like this is over.”
Piper’s heart clenched at his words. She knew he was right — there was still so much danger lurking in the shadows of Gabriel’s past, and it made everything more complicated. But it wasn’t just the danger that was weighing on her. It was the way Gabriel looked at her, the intensity of his feelings. She could feel the pull between them, even as her heart wrestled with her feelings for Jasper.
“I’m not pretending, Gabriel,” she said softly. “But it’s not just about the danger. I need to be honest about my feelings, and right now… I’m not sure what that looks like.”
Gabriel’s face softened, his expression tinged with vulnerability. “I understand, Piper. But I need you to know something.” He paused, his gaze never leaving hers. “I care about you. More than I’ve let on.”
Piper’s breath caught in her throat, her heart racing as his words sank in. She had always known there was something deeper between her and Gabriel — something beyond the danger and the protection he had offered. But hearing him say it out loud made it real in a way she hadn’t expected.
Jasper shifted slightly in his seat, his jaw clenched. Piper could feel the tension radiating from him, and it only added to the confusion swirling inside her. She cared about Gabriel, but her feelings for Jasper were just as strong, if not more complicated.
“You’ve both been there for me,” Piper said, her voice thick with emotion. “In different ways. And I can’t pretend like I don’t feel something for both of you. But I also can’t rush into anything right now. There’s too much at stake.”
Jasper finally spoke, his voice tight but steady. “I’ve always cared about you, Piper. Even when I didn’t show it. I should’ve fought harder for us, and I know that now.”
Piper’s heart ached as she listened to him. Jasper had been the steady presence in her life, the one she had always counted on, even when things had fallen apart between them. But Gabriel had been the one to step in when danger came knocking, the one who had risked everything to protect her and Lily.
“I don’t want to hurt either of you,” Piper said, her voice trembling. “But I also need to be honest with myself. And right now, I don’t know how to do that.”
Gabriel leaned back in his seat, his expression conflicted. “We can’t keep waiting forever, Piper. At some point, you’re going to have to make a choice.”
Piper’s chest tightened at his words, the weight of everything pressing down on her. She knew he was right — the longer she kept the men in limbo, the harder it would be for everyone involved. But how could she choose when her heart was still so divided?
“I need time,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
For a moment, the room fell silent. Piper could feel the tension in the air, the unresolved emotions hanging heavy between them. She didn’t want to make a choice out of fear or pressure. She wanted to be sure — sure of where her heart truly lay.
Gabriel stood abruptly, breaking the stillness. His expression was guarded, his voice clipped. “Take all the time you need, Piper. But don’t wait too long.”
He turned and walked out of the room without another word, leaving Piper sitting there, her chest tight with emotion.
Jasper remained seated, his eyes locked onto Piper’s. “I’ll give you time, too,” he said quietly. “But I’m not going anywhere, Piper. I’ll always be here.”
Piper’s heart twisted at his words. She knew he meant them, but the guilt gnawed at her. How could she keep holding onto both of them, knowing that in the end, someone would get hurt?
As Jasper stood to leave, Piper’s voice broke through the silence. “Jasper?”
He paused, turning back to her with a questioning look.
“I don’t want to lose you,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “But I can’t give you what you deserve right now. Not when I’m still so confused.”
Jasper’s gaze softened, and for a moment, the tension between them eased. “I’ll wait,” he said simply.
With that, he left, leaving Piper alone in the room, the weight of her choices pressing down on her like a storm ready to break.
