The Lies That Binds

The Trap Is Set

The Trap Is Set

The next morning dawned with an unsettling stillness, as if the world was holding its breath for what was about to come. Piper sat at the edge of the bed, watching the sunlight creep through the curtains, the weight of the impending danger pressing down on her chest. There was no turning back now. Today, they would set the trap for Victor. Today, everything would come to a head.

Her heart thudded heavily in her chest as she thought about the plan. Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah had spent the entire night working out the details, ensuring that every contingency was accounted for. Piper had watched them quietly from the sidelines, marveling at the way they had set aside their differences — at least temporarily — for the greater good. But she knew it wouldn’t last. Once Victor was taken care of, the simmering rivalry between them would flare up again, and she wasn’t sure how she would navigate that storm.

With a sigh, Piper stood and padded down the hallway to Lily’s room. She peeked inside to find her daughter still fast asleep, her small body tangled in the blankets, her chest rising and falling with the steady rhythm of peaceful dreams. For a moment, Piper’s heart softened, and all she wanted was to scoop Lily up and run away from everything. But there was no escape. Not yet.

She quietly closed the door and made her way downstairs, where the men were already gathered around the kitchen table, deep in conversation. The tension was palpable, even from across the room, and Piper could feel the weight of their unresolved emotions hanging in the air like a storm cloud.

Gabriel was the first to notice her. He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her stomach flip. There was something unreadable in his expression — something that made her feel both comforted and uneasy all at once.

“You’re up,” Gabriel said softly, breaking the silence.

Piper nodded, glancing at the others. Jasper was leaning back in his chair, arms crossed, his expression hard and focused. Noah stood by the window, his gaze distant as he stared out at the world beyond the safe house, as if waiting for something — or someone.

“Is everything ready?” Piper asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil swirling inside her.

Gabriel nodded, his jaw tight. “We’ve covered all the bases. You’ll stick to your normal routine today, just like we talked about. Noah and I will be positioned nearby, out of sight, while Jasper keeps an eye on things from a distance.”

Piper swallowed hard, the reality of what was about to happen sinking in. She would be the bait. The plan was simple: make it look like she was vulnerable, exposed, while the three men worked from the shadows to lure Victor into the open. It was risky, but they had no other choice. They needed to draw him out, and this was the only way to do it.

Jasper leaned forward, his voice calm but firm. “Remember, you won’t be alone for a second, Piper. We’ll be watching you the entire time. The moment Victor shows up, we move.”

Piper nodded, her throat tight with anxiety. She trusted them — at least, she trusted that they would do whatever it took to protect her and Lily. But the fear of what could go wrong gnawed at her insides. Victor was dangerous, unpredictable, and if something went wrong…

“Are you sure we’re ready?” Piper asked, her gaze flicking between the three men. “I don’t want to put Lily at risk.”

Gabriel stood, crossing the room to stand in front of her. He placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch warm and reassuring. “We’re ready, Piper. You and Lily are going to be safe. I promise.”

Piper searched his face, looking for any sign of doubt, but Gabriel’s expression was resolute. She wanted to believe him — wanted to believe that they had everything under control — but there was still a small voice in the back of her mind telling her that nothing was ever truly safe.

“We don’t have a choice,” Noah said quietly from the window, still not turning to face them. “If we don’t take care of Victor now, he’ll just keep coming. This is our only shot.”

Piper’s stomach twisted at Noah’s words. He was right, of course. Victor wouldn’t stop until he got what he wanted, and if they didn’t act now, there was no telling what kind of danger he would bring into their lives next.

“Okay,” Piper said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Let’s do this.”

The plan was set in motion soon after. Piper got Lily dressed and ready for the day, keeping things as normal as possible for her daughter. They were supposed to head into town, run errands like any other day, but all the while, Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah would be watching — waiting for Victor to make his move.

As they prepared to leave, Piper caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her reflection stared back at her, a mixture of fear and determination etched into her features. She didn’t recognize the woman looking back at her — didn’t recognize the weight of the danger she had allowed into her life. But this was who she had become. A mother, a fighter, and now, bait.

“You’re stronger than you think,” Jasper’s voice said from behind her.

Piper turned to find him standing in the doorway, his expression softening as he looked at her. There was a kindness in his eyes, a steadiness that had always made her feel safe, even in the midst of chaos.

“Am I?” she asked, her voice small.

Jasper nodded, stepping closer. “You’ve been through hell, Piper, and you’re still standing. That’s strength.”

Piper’s heart twisted, and she gave him a small smile, even though her insides felt like they were falling apart. Jasper had always been there, quietly supporting her, even when she didn’t realize she needed it. But now, everything was so much more complicated. With Gabriel back in her life, with Noah trying to make amends, she didn’t know where her heart stood anymore.

“We’re going to get through this,” Jasper said, his voice steady. “And when we do, things will settle down. You’ll have peace again.”

Piper nodded, though she wasn’t sure she believed him. Peace felt like a distant dream, something she couldn’t quite grasp no matter how hard she tried. But Jasper’s reassurance gave her something to hold onto, if only for a moment.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her throat tight with emotion.

Jasper reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “You don’t have to thank me. Just trust me.”

Trust. It was a fragile thing, and after everything she had been through, Piper wasn’t sure who she could truly trust anymore. But as she looked into Jasper’s eyes, she realized that he had never given her a reason to doubt him. He had been there through it all, quietly offering his support, never asking for anything in return.

“I do,” she said softly. “I trust you.”

Jasper’s lips curved into a small smile, and for a brief moment, the tension between them eased. But it was short-lived. They still had a long road ahead, and the threat of Victor loomed over them like a dark cloud.

The drive into town was tense, the silence between them heavy with anticipation. Piper kept her eyes on the road, her heart pounding in her chest as she tried to focus on the task at hand. Lily was in the back seat, chattering away about her plans for the day, completely unaware of the danger lurking just beneath the surface.

Gabriel and Noah followed at a distance, each of them positioned to intercept Victor the moment he appeared. Piper could feel their presence, even though they weren’t in the car with her, and it gave her a strange sense of comfort knowing that they were close.

As they pulled into town, Piper went through the motions of her normal routine — parking the car, getting Lily out, and heading into the small grocery store where she shopped regularly. Her heart raced with every step, her senses heightened as she scanned the area for any sign of Victor.

But everything seemed… normal. Too normal. And that only made her more anxious.

Piper grabbed a few items from the shelves, trying to keep her movements casual, even though her entire body was tense with anticipation. Lily walked beside her, happily holding onto the edge of the cart, completely oblivious to the danger that lurked in the shadows.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, Piper saw him.

Victor.

He was standing at the end of the aisle, his eyes locked onto hers with a predatory gleam that sent a chill down her spine. He looked different than she remembered — his face gaunt, his hair disheveled — but the darkness in his eyes was unmistakable.

Piper’s breath caught in her throat, her heart hammering in her chest. This was it. This was the moment they had been waiting for.

She reached for her phone, her fingers trembling as she sent a quick message to Gabriel.

He’s here.
