Beneath the Surface
Beneath the Surface
Piper paced in her living room, the silence of the house swallowing her whole. Outside, darkness pressed against the windows, a reminder of the unseen dangers lurking beyond. She had spent most of the evening trying to distract herself — reading, checking on Lily, scrolling through her phone — but nothing could pull her from the looming dread in her chest.
Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah had left hours ago. They were out there, hunting for Victor, while she sat at home, powerless to help. Each tick of the clock felt like a countdown to something catastrophic, and the weight of her fear grew heavier with every passing moment.
She was used to being strong. After everything she had been through — the custody battle, Noah’s betrayal, Gabriel’s secrets — she had learned how to carry herself through the chaos. But tonight, her strength felt brittle, as if the wrong move could shatter her entirely.
Piper glanced up at the staircase leading to Lily’s room. Her daughter was safe for now, tucked in bed, unaware of the danger closing in. Piper had debated telling her what was going on, but in the end, she couldn’t bring herself to shatter Lily’s world any more than it already had been. So, she stayed downstairs, carrying the weight of this nightmare on her own shoulders.
A knock at the door startled her out of her thoughts, and her heart leapt into her throat. Her first instinct was fear — what if Victor had come? What if he had found her and Lily, slipping past Gabriel’s surveillance?
But when she looked through the peephole, she saw a familiar face. She hesitated for only a second before opening the door.
It was Noah.
He stood on the porch, his face illuminated by the dim light above. There was a seriousness in his expression, one that made Piper’s stomach twist. She hadn’t expected him to come back so soon — hadn’t expected him to return at all until the danger was over. Her heart thudded as she stepped aside, letting him into the house.
“Noah,” Piper said, her voice barely above a whisper. “What are you doing here? What happened?”
Noah stepped inside, shutting the door behind him. His eyes were dark with worry, his jaw clenched tightly. “We’re closing in on Victor. But Gabriel… he sent me back here. He said I should be with you and Lily, just in case.”
Piper’s breath caught in her throat. She knew what that meant — Gabriel expected something to go wrong. If he thought Noah should be here, it meant the situation was more dangerous than he had let on.
“Just in case?” Piper asked, her voice trembling. “What does that mean? Is Gabriel in danger?”
Noah’s gaze softened, and he took a step closer to her. “We’re all in danger, Piper. Victor’s not playing by any rules. He’s trying to draw us out, to make a move when we’re least expecting it. Gabriel and Jasper are trying to keep him cornered, but there’s no guarantee how this will go.”
Piper sank onto the edge of the couch, her knees suddenly weak. She had known the risks, had prepared herself for the possibility that things could get worse before they got better, but hearing it confirmed left her shaken.
Noah moved closer, sitting beside her. “I’m here to help, Piper. I won’t let anything happen to you or Lily.”
His words were gentle, filled with an emotion that tugged at something deep inside her. Despite everything that had happened between them, Noah still cared. He had made mistakes — some unforgivable — but in this moment, all Piper could feel was a longing for the safety he once provided.
“Do you really think this will end tonight?” Piper asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Noah’s eyes met hers, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she saw a flicker of the man she had once loved. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “But we’re going to do everything we can to make sure you and Lily are safe.”
For a moment, they sat in silence, the weight of their shared past filling the space between them. Piper felt the familiar pull toward Noah, the sense of comfort he had once given her. But the memories of his betrayal still stung, and she knew she couldn’t let herself fall back into old patterns.
She stood up abruptly, needing to create some distance. “I need to check on Lily,” she said, more to herself than to Noah.
He nodded, his expression unreadable as she walked toward the staircase. Piper moved quietly up the stairs, her thoughts a whirlwind. She needed to be strong — for Lily, for herself — but the emotional weight of everything was starting to break her resolve. Gabriel, Noah, Jasper… they were all out there fighting for her, but the lines between protector and threat were blurring.
When she reached Lily’s room, she stood in the doorway for a moment, watching her daughter sleep. Lily looked so peaceful, so untouched by the darkness that surrounded them. Piper’s heart ached. She wanted to give Lily the world, a life free from fear and uncertainty. But right now, all she could do was shield her from the storm brewing outside.
Piper crept into the room, kneeling beside Lily’s bed. She brushed a strand of hair from her daughter’s face, her chest tightening with love and fear. How had it come to this? How had her life spiraled into this chaos?
She kissed Lily’s forehead gently, then slipped out of the room and back downstairs. Noah was still sitting on the couch, his eyes flickering to hers when she re-entered the living room.
“She’s still asleep,” Piper said quietly, sitting down across from him. “She has no idea what’s going on.”
Noah nodded, his expression softening. “That’s a good thing. She doesn’t need to know.”
Piper sighed, running a hand through her hair. “I just want this to be over. I want to go back to normal.”
Noah leaned forward slightly, his voice filled with emotion. “Piper, I know I’ve made mistakes. I know I’ve put you and Lily in danger, and I’m sorry for that. But I’m trying to make things right.”
Piper’s throat tightened. She had heard apologies from Noah before, but this time, something in his tone struck a chord with her. She wanted to believe him, wanted to believe that he had changed, but trust was something she couldn’t afford to give so easily anymore.
“Noah,” she began, her voice soft but firm. “You can’t just say you’re sorry and expect everything to go back to the way it was. You hurt me. You hurt Lily. I’m still trying to figure out if I can ever trust you again.”
Noah’s face fell, and he leaned back, his shoulders slumping. “I know. And I don’t expect you to forgive me overnight. But I’m here. I’m trying.”
Piper’s heart twisted, torn between the man who had once been her whole world and the man he had become. She wanted to believe him, to trust that he was trying to change, but the scars he had left on her heart ran deep.
“I appreciate that you’re here,” Piper said quietly. “But that doesn’t erase what happened.”
Noah nodded, his eyes filled with regret. “I know. But I’m not giving up, Piper. I’m not giving up on you or Lily.”
Piper stood, her hands trembling slightly as she walked over to the window. She couldn’t look at Noah right now — couldn’t handle the weight of his words when her heart was already so conflicted. Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah… each of them had been part of her life in ways that shaped who she was now, and yet she felt more lost than ever.
As she stared out into the darkness, she heard Noah’s footsteps behind her. He was close now, standing just a few feet away, but she didn’t turn around.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me tonight,” Noah said softly, his voice laced with emotion. “But I want you to know that I’m not going to stop fighting for you — for both of you. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe.”
Piper’s eyes stung with unshed tears, but she didn’t respond. She couldn’t. The weight of everything was too much to bear and she didn’t know how to process it all.
