A Shadow from the Past
A Shadow from the Past
Piper was finally beginning to find her rhythm again. The café was bustling, Lily was adjusting well at school, and for the first time in months, the cloud of fear that had loomed over her life seemed to be lifting. Her conversations with Gabriel and Jasper had allowed her to start setting emotional boundaries, and she was learning to focus on her own healing. It felt like progress — like she was finally reclaiming her life.
But peace, she had learned, was fragile.
One afternoon, as Piper stood at the counter taking orders from the lunch crowd, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, frowning when she saw an unknown number flash across the screen. Hesitating for a moment, she stepped into the back room, away from the noise, and answered.
“Hello?” she said cautiously.
There was a pause on the other end, a static hum that sent a shiver down her spine. “Piper Blackwood,” a man’s voice finally spoke, deep and unsettlingly calm. “I’ve been waiting to speak with you.”
Her stomach twisted. “Who is this?”
“An old friend of Gabriel’s,” the man replied. “Let’s just say, he and I have some unfinished business.”
Piper’s heart raced as the man’s voice became more familiar — cold, measured, and dripping with menace. “What do you want?”
The man chuckled darkly, sending another wave of unease through her. “It’s not about what I want, Mrs. Blackwood. It’s about what Gabriel owes me. You’re part of that debt now.”
Her throat tightened, and she struggled to keep her voice steady. “I don’t have anything to do with Gabriel’s past.”
“Oh, but you do,” the man said, his voice sharpening. “You and that precious daughter of yours. Gabriel’s choices have consequences, and it’s time he paid the price.”
Fear gripped her chest. “If you so much as come near my daughter —”
“You’ll do what?” the man interrupted, his voice dripping with mockery. “There’s nothing you can do, Piper. But if you want to avoid dragging Lily into this mess, I suggest you tell Gabriel that his old friend Victor is back. And I won’t stop until I’ve settled the score.”
Before she could respond, the line went dead, leaving Piper standing in the back of the café, her pulse pounding in her ears.
That night, Piper sat on her couch, the weight of Victor’s threat pressing down on her. She had tried to keep herself calm for Lily’s sake, but inside, her thoughts were spiraling. She couldn’t believe this was happening again — just when she had thought she was free from the shadow of Gabriel’s past, it had come crashing back into her life.
Gabriel had been open with her about his involvement in dismantling the criminal organization. He had made it clear that his past was dangerous, and that leaving it behind had been anything but easy. But he had also assured her that it was over, that the enemies he had made were either in prison or too scattered to be a threat anymore.
Apparently, he had been wrong.
Piper knew she needed to tell Gabriel about the call, but something inside her hesitated. She wasn’t sure if she could handle being pulled back into that world. She had spent so much time trying to protect herself and Lily from the chaos, and now it felt like all her progress was unraveling.
A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts, and her heart skipped a beat. For a moment, panic surged through her — had Victor found her already? She rushed to the door, peeking through the peephole before letting out a relieved breath.
It was Gabriel.
She opened the door, stepping aside to let him in. The tension between them was palpable, but Gabriel’s face softened as he looked at her, his brow furrowed with concern.
“I got your message,” he said, his voice low. “What happened?”
Piper didn’t waste any time. “A man called me today,” she began, her voice steady despite the fear bubbling beneath the surface. “He said his name was Victor. He said you owed him something, and he made it clear that Lily and I are part of his revenge.”
Gabriel’s expression darkened, his jaw tightening as he processed her words. “Victor... I should have known he’d resurface.”
“Who is he?” Piper demanded, folding her arms across her chest. “What does he want from you?”
Gabriel let out a long breath, running a hand through his hair. “Victor was one of the leaders in the organization I helped take down. He managed to avoid arrest by going underground, but I didn’t think he’d come after me this way. I should have been more careful.”
“What does he want now?” Piper asked, her voice sharper than she intended. “Is he after money? Revenge?”
Gabriel shook his head. “It’s more than that. Victor blames me for everything — his downfall, his ruined empire. He won’t stop until he feels like he’s evened the score.”
“And now I’m a target,” Piper said, her stomach sinking.
Gabriel reached out, his hand brushing her arm gently. “Piper, I won’t let him hurt you. I’ll do whatever it takes to stop him.”
Piper looked up at him, her heart torn between the comfort Gabriel’s presence brought and the fear that came with knowing just how dangerous his world was. “You promised me,” she whispered. “You promised me that we were done with this. That your past wouldn’t affect us anymore.”
Gabriel’s face tightened with guilt, and he stepped closer, his eyes filled with a mix of determination and regret. “I’m sorry, Piper. I thought it was over. I thought we were safe. But I swear to you, I’ll fix this.”
Piper searched his face, her emotions warring inside her. She wanted to believe him, to trust that he could keep them safe. But the scars from their last brush with danger were still fresh, and now, with Victor targeting them, she wasn’t sure if she had the strength to go through it all again.
“I don’t want to drag Lily into this,” she said quietly. “She’s just a child, Gabriel. She doesn’t deserve any of this.”
Gabriel’s expression softened, and he reached for her hand, holding it tightly. “I know. And that’s why I’m going to take care of this. I’ll make sure Victor never comes near you or Lily again. But I need you to trust me.”
Piper hesitated, the weight of his words hanging between them. She wanted to trust him, wanted to believe that he could protect them, but the fear gnawed at her, reminding her of all the times she had been blindsided by danger before.
“I don’t know if I can,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “This isn’t the life I wanted for Lily. Or for myself.”
Gabriel’s grip tightened on her hand, his eyes pleading with her. “Piper, I’ve done everything I can to leave that world behind. But Victor... he’s not like the others. He won’t stop unless we make him.”
“What does that mean?” Piper asked, her heart racing. “Are you saying this isn’t going to end until someone gets hurt?”
Gabriel’s face darkened, and for a moment, she saw a flicker of the man he had been — the man who had once been part of a world of violence and deception. “If it comes to that,” he said quietly, “I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you and Lily safe.”
Piper pulled her hand away, stepping back as her mind raced. She had fought so hard to distance herself from this life, to protect Lily from the chaos that came with Gabriel’s past. And now, with Victor threatening everything she held dear, it felt like the walls were closing in on her again.
“I need time,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “I need to think about how we’re going to handle this.”
Gabriel nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. “I’ll give you all the time you need. But Piper, please — don’t shut me out. Not now. Not when we need to be united.”
Piper didn’t respond. She wasn’t sure if she could promise that. The weight of everything — the danger, the uncertainty, the unresolved feelings between her and Gabriel — was too much. She needed space, needed time to figure out how to protect Lily without being pulled back into the storm that was now closing in around them.
“I’ll call you if I need anything,” Piper said finally, her voice distant.
Gabriel’s face fell slightly, but he nodded, understanding her need for distance. “I’ll be nearby. If anything happens, you know where to find me.”
With that, he turned and left, the door closing softly behind him. As Piper stood in the now-quiet house, her heart pounded with fear and uncertainty. She knew that the threat Victor posed wasn’t something she could ignore. But what terrified her even more was the realization that she was about to be dragged back into a world she had fought so hard to escape.
