The Lies That Binds

The Echoes of Love

The Echoes of Love

The days following Jasper's visit left Piper in an emotional haze. She had hoped that focusing on Lily and the café would be enough to ground her, but Jasper's words lingered in her mind like a song stuck on repeat.

“I don’t want to lose you.”

His plea had been raw and heartfelt, and though she had asked him for space, his vulnerability had stirred something deep inside her. She had spent years with Jasper — falling in love, building a life, and watching it all unravel. Despite the distance she had tried to create between them, the ties that bound them together hadn’t disappeared. They had only stretched, thin and fragile, but still present.

Now, with Gabriel and Noah out of the immediate picture, the weight of her feelings for Jasper seemed even heavier. Yet the walls she had built around her heart were still up, protecting her from the pain of the past.

That night, as she stood at the kitchen sink washing dishes, Piper’s thoughts drifted again. She could hear the faint sound of Lily’s giggles coming from the living room, where she was playing with her dolls. It was moments like this that made Piper realize just how much her daughter needed stability — and how much she needed it, too.

But was there a future where Jasper, Gabriel, or even Noah could provide that stability? Or had those bridges been burned too badly?

The next morning, Piper woke up early, her body still exhausted despite a full night’s sleep. The weight of her emotional struggle had taken a toll on her, leaving her drained even when she tried to keep up with the day-to-day routine. She poured herself a cup of coffee, letting the steam rise and warm her face, hoping it would wake her up enough to face the day.

Lily bounced into the kitchen, already wide awake and ready for school. Her energy was infectious, and despite everything on her mind, Piper couldn’t help but smile at her daughter’s enthusiasm.

“Good morning, Mommy!” Lily chirped, grabbing a piece of toast from the counter.

“Good morning, sweet girl,” Piper replied, running a hand through her daughter’s messy hair. “Are you ready for school?”

Lily nodded vigorously, her eyes sparkling. “Yup! Miss Kelly said we’re going to make a big art project today! I’m going to draw you a picture of our house!”

Piper’s heart swelled with love. “I can’t wait to see it. I’ll hang it up in the café, okay?”

Lily beamed, her smile wide and full of joy. “Okay!”

As Piper helped Lily get ready for school, she felt a pang of guilt tugging at her. For so long, she had been wrapped up in the chaos of her relationships — caught between her feelings for Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah — that she had forgotten to savor these small, precious moments with her daughter. Moments where the world felt simple and uncomplicated.

As they walked to school hand in hand, Piper made a silent vow to herself: no matter how complicated her own life became, Lily would always come first.

At the café, Piper threw herself into her work, focusing on the things she could control. The repairs had been finished for weeks, and the café was finally starting to feel like its old self again. The regulars had returned, and there was a steady stream of new customers as well — people who had heard about the café through word of mouth and wanted to see what it was all about.

It was a small comfort, knowing that despite the upheaval in her personal life, she had managed to keep her business afloat. And yet, even as she took orders and greeted customers with a smile, there was still an undercurrent of unease in her heart.

Her phone buzzed in her apron pocket, and Piper pulled it out to check the message. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Gabriel’s name on the screen.

Gabriel: Just checking in. Hope you’re doing well.

Piper stared at the message for a moment, her emotions tangled. Gabriel had been true to his word — he had given her space, letting her make the decisions she needed to without pressuring her. But just seeing his name was enough to send her thoughts spiraling back to the times they had spent together, the way he had been there for her when everything else had fallen apart.

She typed a quick response, keeping it simple.

Me: Thanks, Gabriel. I’m doing okay. Hope you’re well, too.

As she tucked her phone back into her pocket, Piper felt the familiar tug of longing that came with thoughts of Gabriel. He had been so steady, so dependable — but that didn’t erase the secrets he had kept or the danger he had brought into her life. Could she really let herself be vulnerable with him again? Could she trust him completely?

The door to the café opened, and Piper glanced up, half expecting it to be Gabriel walking through the door. But it wasn’t. Instead, it was Jasper.

Her heart skipped again, but this time it was different — heavier. She had asked him for space, and yet here he was again, as if he couldn’t stay away.

“Hey,” he said softly, his eyes searching hers as he approached the counter.

“Jasper,” Piper said, keeping her voice neutral. “What are you doing here?”

“I know you asked for time,” he began, his voice steady but filled with emotion, “but I couldn’t stop thinking about our last conversation. I just... I needed to see you.”

Piper sighed, setting down the cup she had been holding. “Jasper, we talked about this.”

“I know,” he said quickly, his eyes pleading. “And I’m not here to push you into anything, I swear. But I can’t pretend like I don’t care about you, Piper. I’ve spent years loving you, and I can’t just turn that off.”

His words cut deep, stirring feelings she had tried to bury. She had loved Jasper once — loved him with everything she had — but that love had been worn down by time, by pain, by everything that had happened between them.

“Jasper,” Piper began, her voice soft but firm, “I need time. I need to focus on Lily, on the café, on rebuilding my life. I can’t think about us right now.”

“I get that,” Jasper said, nodding. “I do. But I don’t want to lose you, Piper. I don’t want to lose us.”

Piper felt the weight of his words settle over her, and for a moment, she didn’t know what to say. She had asked him for space, but he was here again, laying his heart out for her to see.

She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. “Jasper, I care about you. I always will. But right now, I need to focus on myself and Lily. I can’t give you the answers you’re looking for.”

Jasper’s face fell, but he nodded, clearly struggling to accept her words. “Okay,” he said quietly. “I understand.”

There was a long silence between them, the weight of their history hanging heavy in the air. Finally, Jasper gave her a small, sad smile and stepped back toward the door.

“I’ll be here when you’re ready,” he said softly before walking out of the café.

Piper watched him go, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions. She had made the right decision — she knew that — but it didn’t make it any easier. And as she turned back to her work, she couldn’t help but wonder if she would ever truly be ready for any of it again.

That evening, after Lily had gone to bed, Piper sat on the porch steps, the cool night air brushing against her skin. The stars twinkled overhead and for a moment, the world felt still and quiet. But inside, Piper’s mind was anything but quiet.

She thought about Jasper, about Gabriel, about Noah. Each of them held a piece of her heart, but she wasn’t ready to give any of them the whole thing. Not yet.

For so long, she had been defined by her relationships with these men, caught between love and betrayal, trust and uncertainty. But now, for the first time in a long time, Piper was trying to define herself outside of them.

It wasn’t easy. The pull was always there — the desire to let herself fall into the comfort of someone else’s arms, to let someone else take the burden of her emotions. But she couldn’t do that anymore. She needed to be strong, not just for herself, but for Lily.

As she sat there, staring up at the night sky, Piper made a quiet promise to herself: she would continue to take things one day at a time. She would rebuild her life, piece by piece, without letting the weight of her past drag her down.

The future was still uncertain, but for now, Piper was choosing herself.
