The Lies That Binds

A New Beginning

A New Beginning

The decision had been brewing inside Piper for days, like a storm gathering on the horizon. She had tried to juggle everything — her relationships with Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah; her role as a mother; and the weight of her own emotional scars — but it had all become too much. The constant tug-of-war between her heart and her mind was exhausting, and no matter how much she tried to make sense of it all, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was losing herself in the process.

Standing in the middle of her small living room, Piper looked around at the remnants of the life she had built — a life that now felt like it was being held together by fragile threads. The café was slowly being restored, but the scars left by the attack still marred it's walls. Her relationships with the three men in her life were just as fragile, the lines between love, trust, and betrayal blurred beyond recognition.

But there was one thing she knew for sure: Lily needed her. And right now, Piper needed to be strong for her daughter. Stronger than she had been in a long time.

With a deep breath, Piper reached for her phone and scrolled through her contacts. Her thumb hovered over Gabriel’s name first, then Jasper’s, and finally, Noah’s. Each name brought a rush of emotions — love, regret, anger, hope — but those emotions no longer felt like they should dictate her next move.

She wasn’t going to let anyone else make decisions for her anymore. Steeling herself, she tapped on Gabriel’s contact and typed out a message:

Me: Gabriel, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. I need some time to figure things out — time for myself and for Lily. I hope you understand.

The message felt like a weight off her chest as she sent it. She cared deeply for Gabriel, and in another world — one without lies and danger—maybe they could have built something lasting. But right now, she couldn’t handle the uncertainty. She needed clarity, and the only way to find that was to take a step back from everything.

Next, she composed a similar message to Jasper:

Me: Jasper, I care about you, but I need to focus on myself and Lily right now. I hope you can respect that. We both need time to heal.

Her fingers hesitated over Noah’s name. She had already set boundaries with him, but now it was time to make it clear that she wasn’t just protecting Lily — she was protecting herself too. She quickly typed out the final message:

Me: Noah, I’m not ready to trust you again. For now, I need space. Please respect that — for Lily’s sake.”

When the last message was sent, Piper let out a long breath. She hadn’t realized how much tension she had been carrying until it began to slip away, leaving her feeling lighter, if only for a moment.

This wasn’t the end of her relationships with these men. She knew that. But it was the beginning of something new — something that belonged solely to her and to Lily.

Later that afternoon, Piper sat with Claire in her office, going over the latest updates regarding her custody arrangements and Noah’s involvement with the criminal organization. Piper had taken Claire’s advice seriously — boundaries were key, and she was determined to stick to them.

“Are you sure about this?” Claire asked, her gaze steady as she reviewed the paperwork in front of her. “It’s a big step, cutting off so much contact.”

“I’m sure,” Piper said firmly. “For once, I need to put Lily and myself first. I’ve spent so much time wrapped up in everything — Gabriel, Jasper, Noah. But I’ve been neglecting what really matters.”

Claire nodded, a hint of approval in her expression. “It’s a smart decision. You can’t rebuild your life if you’re constantly being pulled in different directions.”

Piper smiled slightly, though it was tinged with exhaustion. “That’s exactly how I’ve been feeling — pulled apart.”

“Well,” Claire said, setting the paperwork aside, “taking this time to focus on yourself and your daughter is the right move. You’re doing the best thing for both of you.”

Piper knew she was right. For the first time in months, she felt like she had control — real control — over her life again. It was still fragile, and there was still so much work to be done, but this was a start.

When she left Claire’s office, the cool autumn air brushed against her skin, and for the first time in a long while, Piper felt like she could breathe.

Back at the café, the repairs were almost finished. The fresh paint on the walls, the new fixtures — it was all coming together, bit by bit. As Piper walked through the space, she felt a sense of accomplishment that had nothing to do with the men in her life. This was hers — something she had built, something she was rebuilding now with her own strength.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, and she pulled it out, half-expecting a response from Gabriel or Jasper. But it wasn’t either of them.

It was a message from Lily’s teacher.

Ms. Smith: Hello, Mrs. Blackwood! I just wanted to let you know that Lily has been doing much better in class this week. She seems more focused and calm. Just thought you’d like to know!

Piper smiled, her heart swelling with pride. Lily had been through so much — far more than any child her age should have to endure — but she was resilient, just like her mother. Piper had always known that, but hearing it from someone else made it all the more real.

This was why she was making these decisions. For Lily. To give her daughter the stability she deserved, the stability that had been missing for so long.

Piper texted a quick reply to the teacher, then slipped her phone back into her pocket and surveyed the café again. There was still work to be done, both here and in her personal life, but for the first time in a long time, she felt hopeful.

Later that evening, as Piper was closing up the café, she heard the familiar sound of the doorbell chiming. She looked up, expecting to see a customer who had lost track of time, but instead, she found herself staring at Gabriel.

Her heart skipped a beat, but she quickly steeled herself. She had already sent the message — already made it clear that she needed time.

“Gabriel,” she said softly, trying to keep her voice steady. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“I got your message,” he said, his expression unreadable. “But I needed to see you.”

Piper crossed her arms, a flicker of unease rising in her chest. “I thought I made it clear that I need some space.”

Gabriel nodded, stepping closer but keeping his distance, respecting her boundaries. “You did. And I respect that, Piper. But before I step back and give you the space you need, I wanted you to know something.”

Piper’s heart raced as she waited for him to continue, unsure of what he was going to say.

“I understand why you need time,” Gabriel said, his voice quiet but filled with emotion. “I’ve caused a lot of pain, and I know it’s going to take time to rebuild trust. But I want you to know that I’m here — for you and for Lily. Even if you decide that you don’t want me in your life anymore, I’ll still be here, ready to help in any way you need.”

Piper’s chest tightened, the weight of his words settling over her. She didn’t know what to say. She had expected Gabriel to push back, to try to convince her that they could make things work. But instead, he was offering her the one thing she had been craving for months: understanding.

“Thank you,” Piper said quietly, her voice thick with emotion. “That means a lot.”

Gabriel gave her a small, sad smile, then took a step back toward the door. “Take all the time you need, Piper. I’ll be here if you ever want to talk.”

And with that, he left, the door closing softly behind him.

Piper stood there for a long moment, staring at the door, her mind swirling with everything that had happened. Gabriel’s words had been simple, but they had cut through the fog of confusion in a way she hadn’t expected. He wasn’t pressuring her. He was giving her exactly what she had asked for.

For the first time, she felt like she could breathe. Like she had been given the freedom to make decisions without the weight of expectations pressing down on her.

As she locked up the café for the night and made her way home, Piper knew that the road ahead wouldn’t be easy. There were still so many things to figure out — so many pieces of her life that needed rebuilding. But for now, she was choosing herself.
