79: I Fear For Those I Love
79: I Fear For Those I Love
Kit:It took quite some time before P’Kla finally headed downstairs after his guards informed him that Kit was there, demanding an audience. He didn’t really interact with Kit that much, mostly because there was no need for him to do so. Kit was Kim’s lover, and the man was very possessive about Kit, so Kla didn’t want to bother much about socializing.
In fact, he wasn’t a people person. Moreover, he still had some leftover grudge on Kit that didn’t really go away—he had been sort of bitter about Kit being the apple of Kim’s eye, instead of Kanya, who was carrying his child, and even though that matter had already been resolved, it seemed that there was still some reluctance on Kla’s part.
But since Kit had told the guards that he had something urgent to discuss with the cold and firm lawyer, the man in question managed to force himself out of his room to see what this “urgent matter” was all about.
When Kla came down, he saw Kit huddled by himself on the sofa, knees pressed to his chest. He looked pale and worried—a telltale sign that something was truly wrong.
“What’s wrong?” When Kit looked up from his position, he saw that P’Kla was frowning, obviously affected by Kit’s own glum disposition. “What do you wish to talk about so late at night?”
Kit looked around. There were only two other people nearby, and they were guards trained to mind their own business. However, Kit still didn’t feel comfortable airing out his concerns here.
“There’s something I want to tell you… it’s about my sister,” Kit said slowly, “so I think it would be better for the both of us if we spoke in private.”
At the mention of Kanya, Kla’s frown deepened. “What about her?” he demanded. “Is she alright? I mean, we all just had dinner together this evening, and she seemed okay then. Did something happen to her afterward? Something I wasn’t informed of?”
Rapid fire questions with no room for answers. Kit resisted the urge to curse; P’Kla’s needless panic made him anxious about his own, real problem.
“Is that what you’re here to tell me?” P’Kla continued to pester.
Kit sighed. “If you must know, my sister is safe and unharmed; I simply want to discuss with you what would happen after her divorce with P’Kim.”
With just that statement, Kla could tell immediately that something was off, because Kit had never brought up such a topic before. In other words, he usually stayed out of the “adult business”, so this was very uncharacteristic of him.
Relenting, Kla called him to his office and closed the door behind him once they were both inside. “So what is it?” he asked firmly. “What is it that you really want to talk to me about so urgently?”
Even with the door closed and with no one else except the two of them inside, Kit was still hesitant to share. He looked around the room, asking, “Are there any devices in your office that can be tracked or bugged?”
Kla raised an eyebrow. What a question. “You think someone might me listening in on this conversation?”
Kit ignored him, for the time being. “Do you practice lawyer-client confidentiality even with me? Even from P’Kim?” he continued instead, as if Kla had never spoken.
Kla scoffed, growing impatient by the second. “Who do you want to sue for you to be asking such cautious questions?”
Kit finally met his gaze, and for a good few moments they only stared at each other, though Kit had a faraway, dazed look in his eyes, as though he wasn’t really seeing P’Kla.
And just when Kla was about to ask what the hell Kit wanted, his patience thinning, Kit went to tug at the scarf around his neck, and when it loosened and fell off his shoulders, Kla could barely suppress his gasp of surprise.
There were marks around his neck that Kla had no doubt were caused by strangulation. The fingerprints were prominent, and from the look of it, they hadn't been caused all that long ago.
“Were you attacked today? At the restaurant?” Kla asked rhetorically, knowing the truth without having his question confirmed.
Nonetheless, Kit nodded, unable to look P’Kla in the eye.
“What’s going on with you? Why did you lie to Kim when he asked you what had happened?” P’Kla asked, almost incredulously. “What are you doing here, telling me about this, instead of going to my brother? You know Kim is better equipped at handling this than I am.”
Kit sighed deeply, and for a moment, Kla felt sorry for him. The poor guy looked like he was carrying the weight of the universe on his shoulders. But he was still hiding something crucial, and he needed to know what it was.
The family was in danger from an unknown assailant and Kit may just have what they needed to get to this person, but for some reason, he couldn’t stop hesitating. And that made Kla question if this person that had attacked Kit was someone unknown…or was it instead someone who Kit knew very well.
And if Kla had to guess…he would go with the later. And he already started to have an inkling of who it was and why it was so difficult for Kit to open up to Kim.
“At the moment,” Kit admitted, “I don’t know who I can trust. Don’t get me wrong, I trust P’Kim completely. It’s just that… I’m in a complicated position right now and I find it difficult to tell him about this. You were the only person I felt I could turn to; the only person who I think can best help me about my situation.”
Kla didn’t know what to say, so he remained silent. It didn’t matter, because Kit didn’t seem like he was waiting for a response.
“P’Kla, I am not only scared for my own life, but also for everyone that I love,” he pleaded. “So please, help me. I don’t know what to do.”
