54: To Have and To Comfort
Kit:Kit had been studying when P’Aawut peeked into his room and said, “The master requests your presence.”
Usually, P’Aawut wouldn’t need to seek him out to find P’Kim, because P’Kim was more than capable of finding Kit himself. But then he remembered the last time that P’Aawut had come to fetch Kit when P’Kim needed him…and it had been when P’Kim had been in the hospital after being shot.
Alarmed, he stood from his seat, instantly dropping his pen on the desk. “What? Why? What happened?” The words came tumbling out of him in a worried frenzy.
P’Aawut, taken aback by his concern, but he smiled to make him feel relaxed. “Kar thot khabNongKhun“Oh. Mai na, pom “Khun khabStartled once again, Kit noticed Aawut’s features from head to toe. Since he couldn’t find any physical evidence of an injury, Kit had to assume that Aawut wasn’t the one who got hit. But P’Kim didn’t usually go around hitting people either, so he must have hit a wall or something solid, hopefully inanimate.
“Khob khun“I thank you as well.” And that was the last of their conversation, before P’Aawut disappeared down the hallway, leaving the door open for Kit to make his way to Kim’s office, which was on the ground floor of the mansion.
After securing a tube of ointment from the first-aid kit in his bathroom, he quickly went over to P’Kim’s office, after making sure that no one was watching him head in that direction while he descended down the stairs. However, he knocked on the door; twice, thrice, but no answer came from the other side.
Kit frowned. Was he busy? Or had he already left the room?
Taking in a deep breath, since he knew P’Kim wouldn't mind anyway, he entered the room without waiting for an answer. Inside, he found P’Kim on his chair by the desk, clearly in deep thought. He had a frown on his face as he leaned back against his head rest, his eyes scanning the ceiling.
Not wanting to startle him, Kit tried not to be too loud or too silent as he walked in, closing the door behind him. His brows furrowed as he neared the table and saw that P’Kim’s knuckles were throbbing red. He must have slammed it on the table when he and P’Aawut were talking. ‘Serious work-related matters’Kit tapped on the table now, bringing Kim's attention to him—it was only then that the mafia don finally noticed Kit’s presence.
“Oh, it's you,” he breathed, sitting up straighter on the chair. “When did you get here?”
“I knocked when I entered.” Kit told him. “But you didn't answer, so I just walked in. I hope that's alright?”
“Of course,” Kit pointed at Kim’s hand, and it was also then that Kim realized his knuckles were bruised from the hit earlier. “Did Aawut tell you I got injured?”
“Yes.”Kit worked on lathering ointment on Kim’s hand as he spoke. “He said you were stressed about work related matters.”
Kim’s face softened. “Yes, a bit.”
Kit massaged his hand, and Kim leaned against his seat comfortably, closing his eyes to relish the feeling of Kit's warmth. Satisfied with his work, he pressed his lips to Kim’s wounded knuckles, before letting go.
“I feel like I’m intruding on something important,” he said. “I came here to keep you company, but I can come back some other time.”
Kit went to leave, but Kim caught onto his arm before he turned around, his grip firm on his.
“No,” he said. “Please stay.”
“Are you sure?” Kit asked, head tilted to the side in question. “You look like you need some time alone.”
Kim shook his head, determined. “On the contrary, you came at just the right time because I was feeling down.” He patted his lap, an invitation for Kit. “My batteries need recharging.”
At that, Kit laughed and padded over to where Kim sat behind the desk. “The great mafia don of one of two most fearsome gangs in all of Bangkok, asking for cuddles?” Kit teased. “The world truly is full of surprises.”
Kim kissed the top of his head as he pulled Kit into his lap. As Kit curled up in his arms, they sat there quietly, enjoying each other’s company without needing to exchange any words.
This was the peak of companionship: being able to comfort each other without having to say anything.
Kit wondered what P’Kim had been thinking about so seriously earlier. He had been so preoccupied with his musings, that it had gotten to the point when he didn't realize somebody had entered the room. And if it wasn't Kit who had come, that would have been the mafia don’s fatal mistake.
Fatal.“Did you manage to find out who shot the bullet?” Kit blurted out without thinking. Shia,Stupid Kit!“You don't have to answer that if you don't want to,” he tried to retract. “I didn't mean to upset you, I’m sorry. I was just concerned about you; you look like you've got the weight of the world on your shoulders alone.” He sighed. “I just wanted to know if… if there was someone who wanted to hurt you.”
Kim didn't respond for a while, trying to form the right words to say to Kit without sounding overbearing. “I understand,” he finally said. “But… you don't need to get involved with such matters. It's not your world to worry about. Instead, you should focus on studying. Your exams are coming up, aren't they?”
Kit nodded at that, and Kim stroked his hair with his fingers. “You should enjoy your university life, too. This time of your life won't come twice, so you should make the most of it.”
“Well, I can do both at the same time,” Kit huffed playfully, though there was a serious undertone in his words. “I can enjoy my college life andKim smiled, holding his gaze.
“As for the mafia stuff…” Kit trailed off. “You don't have to worry about me, either—I don't ever want to get involved because I do know exactly how dangerous this world is and how it tough it can be for someone like me, who has no idea what I am dealing with.”
“But?” Kim prompted. “I know there's a ‘but’ in that statement.”
“Ha… you know me too well.” Kit nuzzled the crook of P’Kim's neck. “I’m just worried about you since I have already seen you at the hospital once, and I never want to see you back there again.”
Kim pulled him closer, kissing the top of his head endearingly. “I know, teerak“I trust you,” Kit whispered as they closed the distance between them with a sweet kiss.
