Chapter 15: Shadow
Kit:
“Kit! Kit, over here!”
Earth, Ben and Nong Prem, three of his best friends from high school, waved Kit over when they saw him entering the campus the following week, his backpack slung over his shoulder as he kept glancing back at the sleek black car driving away from the main street.
“Hey guys!” Kit waved back before making his way over to his friends, but not before looking back at the gates one last time to make sure that the men who had dropped him off were truly gone for good.
The past week, even though both his sister and P’Kim had agreed that he could move into a dorm near his campus, they had hardly let him do anything by himself…except for maybe, going to the toilet alone.
Either P’Kanya or P’Kim had been like his shadow, going everywhere he went, until he had gotten fed up and reminded them, not-so-calmly, that he was okay and all he had was flesh wound. The x-ray that the doctor had requested had come back clean and there were no lasting side-effects of being kicked by those goons except for a few bruises that were slowing fading away as well.
This morning had been his last day at the mansion with P’Kim and his family and he was supposed to be getting the keys to his dorm this evening, after classes were over and when P’Kim’s men came in their shiny black car to deliver him to his condo safely. Of course there had been a catch to let him move out on his own…P’Kim was paying for his dorm, which had then become a condo instead of a dorm, and his University tuition fees from now on was going to be paid by P’Kim as well, even though he had desperately begged him not to do so.
He didn’t understand why even P’Kanya was suddenly siding with P’Kim on all matters. Was she truly that worried about him? He understood her in certain respects, since they only had each other left…but sometimes, even he felt it was too much.
Now, he took a seat at the stone tables in front of the campus ground with his best friends surrounding him with worried and curious expressions on their faces.
“Where have you been to?” Prem asked him with a frown on his handsome face. “We went to your apartment on Friday but there was no one there. Your neighbors said that you and your sister left.”
“That’s right!” Ben injected. “Someone even said that they had heard gunshots in the middle of the night or something.”
Hearing his friends talk about the incident made him feel a bit uneasy, but he already knew what he was about to say. P’Kim had him practice the lines until he could recite them in his sleep.
“The debt collectors came to our house and raided it mid-week.” Kit told his friends. “The gunshots were them breaking down the lock. Fortunately my sister and I had been to a friend’s house that night so we weren’t hurt. But we’ve moved houses since that day. Phi is staying at a friend’s house and I’m moving to a condo near campus.”
“Ah! You finally got a condo of your own!” Earth rejoiced in all his bad-boy glory. “Now we can party all night and get as trashed as we want to without worrying about your sister finding out!”
“Hell no! That’s bad for your health!” Nong Prem, the Moon from the Faculty of Medicine, complained as he looked at Earth with narrowed eyes.
“Oh, shut up!” Earth snorted. “You’re just worried that your little boyfriend won’t allow you to get hammered. Isn’t it? Dr. P-whipped?”
“Oh, shut up!” Prem made at face at Earth, but there was no heat behind his words.
This was part of the reason why Kit had been more open to his one-night stand with P’Kim. Ever since he was in high school, he had seen several of his friends be in same-sex relationships without a care in the world. It was the twenty first century after all, the world had changed a great deal and society was way more accepting than it had been even a decade ago.
However, there were still people who frowned at homosexual couples and those who were different from them. Some even went as far as to write horrible comment on their social media pages and throw snide remarks at the couples when they walked past them on the street. But the majority just chose to ignore them and treat them like any other couple.
Prem and his ‘boyfriend’…Nong Wayo, had been together for a long time and even though their friends liked to tease him by saying Nong Wayo was his boyfriend, the couple hadn't announced it officially yet. Kit thought it was more to do with the fact that Wayo was still underaged at only seventeen. However, even though they were all best friends, Prem was also a year younger than the rest of them as he was still a freshman. He had become friends with his seniors when he got chosen for their football (soccer) team and since then, no one bothered to use honorifics with him.
“So…when are you going to take us to your condo?” Ben asked excitedly. “I can get the food if Earth promises to buy the beer.”
“Hey! Hey! Hey!” Earth slapped his fried at the back of his head. “Since when did I say I’m willing to pay for the beer? Shouldn’t we all buy it together?”
“Why not let Kit buy it?” Prem smirked. “After all, it’s his condo inauguration party.”
“Hell no!” Kit frowned at the leeches with human faces. “I didn’t even invite you guys! You just invited yourself and now you want me to treat you?”
“Ok, ok! Calm down!” Earth laughed at his friend’s panicked expression. “How about you tell us the date so we can prepare. We’ll get all the good stuff ourselves.”
“I’ll text you guys. I’m still moving my stuff.” Kit decided to lie for the time being as he wasn’t sure when he would be able to call them either.
He hadn't even been able to see or choose the condo he would be living in since it was P’Kim who chose it for him and after all, beggars can’t be choosers. He was lucky that the Mafia boss was kind enough to get him and his sister out of the shitty situation they were in and give them a life they had never ever dreamed about. Kit didn’t want to be too demanding on top of everything that he was already getting. And besides…what right did he have to do so?
P’Kim and him…they simply had a one-night stand. It didn’t have any deeper meaning to it. He was just helping a poor boy who had been drugged and was acting pathetic. There was nothing else to it.
Dealing with his current situation was stressful enough; the last thing he wanted was for his feelings to get in the mix.
However, as he headed to his class with his friends, he failed to notice the pair of dark brown eyes that kept on following him until he was inside the building.
Kim smiled from his car, letting Kit believe that he was going to leave him alone for the time being. He had become his shadow in the last few days, walking right beside him at all times until no one could tell them apart. He was okay with it. He like it…being Kit’s shadow.
Now…all he needed was Kit to believe that Kim had left him alone…but in reality, he was exactly where Kim wanted him to be, alone and away from his sister.
Now it was his time to catch his prey unaware…and make sure he never left his sight ever again.
Author’s Note- Okay, so a little info on the ‘Faculty Moon’ that I mentioned earlier in the story. In most Thai Universities (or from what I’ve gathered watching countless BL shows), there’s a Beauty Pageant/talent contest which occurs during the freshmen year. The boys are called Moons and the girls are called Stars and in generals it’s called the Star and Moon contest (I think). The Star and Moon are chosen among the most beautiful and handsome fresher’s via a vote or directly by the seniors and the best example of this is the 2 Moons series.
The Moons from all the faculties in one University then compete against each other for the title of University Moon. It also holds certain talent shows that help the judges decide who to vote for in the end. I hope this explanation helps you understand the situation in the story better.
