Chapter 9: The Ayutthaya Family
Kit:
The humongous chandelier hanging from the ceiling made the entire room look like a fairy tale. The golden light reached every corner, illuminating the room in a soft sunset glow, but if it wasn’t enough, several other chandelier stands were also placed all around the room to provide more lighting.
Kit followed silently behind P’Kim down the spiral staircase to the dining hall were the other members were already waiting for them to arrive. He saw P’Kanya talking to a girl about his age, who had the same dark hair as P’Kim but her eyes were a more golden shade of brown that he had hardly seen on anyone before.
“Hia!” The girl called out as soon as she saw Kim, her eyes lighting up with excitement. “P’Kaya was just telling me about how you were in University!”
“Really now?” Kim gave Kaya a secret smile that she returned as he made his way to the head of the table and took his seat, but not before placing a kiss on top of the girl’s head. “And don’t call her Kaya! It’s for me to use only.”
“Oh?” The girl looked at Kim with mischievous eyes. “Then it’s too late! I’ll be calling her P’Kaya from now on!”
Kit went to sit next to his sister on the huge table meant for about fifty people; watching Kim interacting with the others with ease. He couldn’t help but feel out of place and a little awkward in this big house.
“Kit? Are you okay?” P’Kanya asked from next to him, reaching out to place her hand on his knees under the table. “You look a little pale.”
“I’m fine na, Phi.” Kit shook his head immediately, putting on a small smile for his sister. “Just a little tired.”
“Ah, Som!” Kanya turned to the youngest member of the Ayutthaya family. “This is my younger brother, Kittibun, you can call him P’Kit. And Kit, this is Kohsoom, Kim’s…”
“Younger sister.” Kim completed for Kaya when he saw her hesitate. “Som is my younger sister.”
“Sawadee Kha, P’Kit.” Som greeted Kit cheerfully. “It’s so nice to meet someone my age around here!”
“Sawadee Khap.” Kit bowed slightly at Som. “It’s nice to meet you too, Nong.”
Kit didn’t know what else to say as the rest of them began to have a conversation once again, so he looked around the table at all the luxurious dishes that he had only seen in movies or on menus of fancy restaurants so far. They made his mouth water, even though he was nervous enough to not have an appetite.
“Let’s continue, shall we?”
P’Kim’s voice rang in his ears as he felt a tiny shiver run down his spine. Just remembering how close they had been…how P’Kim had pulled him into his strong chest…it made him feel hot all over. But sitting next to P’Kanya…the guilt started to eat at him even more.
Was he doing the right thing? Hiding it from P’Kanya about what had happened between him and P’Kim?
Suddenly, the sound of the doors to the dining hall opening startled Kit into looking up as a man entered the room and the two guards stationed at the door bowed slightly as the man passed them both.
Both Kit and Kaya watched in surprise as the new member walked straight to Som and sat down next to her before placing a kiss to her forehead as Som instinctively leaned into him.
The man was wearing dark blue suit and pants, paired with a white shirt underneath and he looked incredibly handsome with his dark hair gelled back neatly. He wore thin gold-rimmed glasses and Kaya could see dimples appear on his chin when he smiled at Nong Som. His lips were a pretty pink and he had a nice built, not as fit as Kim but very close. He was also over six feet tall, the same height as Kim and almost looked like an older version of him, if it weren’t for the light brown eyes.
She had been close with Kim for a long time, but this was the first time that Kaya was seeing this man. She instantly knew who he was, Kla Ayutthaya, the oldest son of the Ayutthaya family and Kim’s older brother, but Kaya was surprised that he had never showed up to even one of Kim’s college events.
“Kaya, Kit,” Kim’s voice got the attention of the Nong-Phi as he turned to point towards the new man to introduce them properly. “This is Hia Kla, the eldest son of the Ayutthaya family and Hia…these are Kanya and Kit Ritthirong, they will be staying over this weekend. Kanya and I were friends in college.”
“I see.” Kla merely glanced at the two of them before ordering the servers to start serving dinner and both Kaya and Kit felt like they might be intruding on their privacy by arriving at the mansion.
Dinner was delicious, the best meal that Kit had had ever since his mother passed away and he was feeling full already by the time deserts were brought out. There were so many things that he had never tried before in his life, so he was excited to try them all. However, in his excitement, he forgot to notice how P’Kim was keeping an eye on him as he ate.
“Som, why don’t you go to your room and get some rest?” P’Kla suggested right after dinner was over and the servants had cleared the plates. “I’ll take you horse riding early in the morning tomorrow.”
“Oh, Hia!” Som shook her head with a smile. “Just say that the adults need to talk na and I’ll be gone! No need to shoo me away so politely.”
P’Kla only smiled at her, showing those dimples as Som got up from her seat to kiss both her brother’s cheeks before heading back up the stairs to her room. And that was when P’Kla finally turned to face the Nong-Phi.
“Does he know or should we send him away as well?” Kla asked in a straightforward manner, making Kaya frown. She didn’t like it when people were rude for no reason.
“I know.” Kit immediately held Kaya’s hand under the table to make sure his sister didn’t feel uncomfortable. “And I’m staying.”
“Good.” Kla folded his hands across his chest as he stared at the duo intensely. “Then you know that what your sister is about to do is illegal.”
Kim snorted with laughter at his brother’s comment before trying to disguise it as a cough. “Hia…we are from the Ayutthaya clan. Almost everything that we do is illegal.”
“You don’t need to remind me, Kim,” Kla glared at his younger brother. “However, think about the consequences before you ask favors of others. She’s an unmarried woman. What happens to her future? What happens after she gives birth?”
“I promised to take care of Kaya for as long as possible.” Kim reassured his Hia. “I will make sure they are well taken care of even if something were to happen to me.”
“You don’t understand, do you?” Kla sighed as he got up from his chair. “In the future…if Kanya wants to settle down with someone else…what happens to the child that will see her as the mother? What happens if her future husband isn’t ready to share custody or let her stay in contact with you and your child? And most importantly…what happens when people start to question exactly what kind of a relationship the two of you had that led to having a baby out of wedlock?”
With that, Kla left the dining room, leaving everyone flustered and unsure about the future.
