Chapter 1865: The Dark City of Glass Steel

Chapter 1865: The Dark City of Glass Steel

"Say," Rex darted his gaze left and right, letting the people look and remember his face. He was playing along. "I wonder, considering how big this realm really was, do you always interrogate everyone who enters? If it were me, that sounds like a big hassle."

"I’m not going to let you leave without being checked," Vadyn answered flatly. "Don’t even try."

"Not trying to do that," Rex sighed. It was still a mystery to him as to what he did to instigate the enforcers like this. He hadn’t done anything wrong. Or at least, the enforcers did not know he had done anything wrong. "I’m only wondering what gets me on the radar."

Vadyn snorted at what he said.

She found it ridiculous that Rex would think himself that highly.

"You’re not special," She gestured around with her hand. "Many troublesome entities entered the realm through the cavity since it’s the safest. After all, there are fewer eyes watching this place compared to the other parts.

"Anyone who entered the cavity, especially the southern and eastern parts, would be checked." She added.

Rex nodded in understanding.

He was expecting somewhere along the way that he had made a mistake.

But it wasn’t the case.

Guess what Nivellen knew is common knowledge.

Just then, a frown crept to Rex’s face, "If everyone who entered this area were checked, the sisters who entered this realm with me... why aren’t they also checked and interrogated? And also, Nash, why did you let him leave? Why is it only me?"

"Who said it’s only you?" Vadyn looked at him and smirked.

A mask covered her upper face, exposing only her mouth, which highlighted the smirk.

Rex’s body tensed up, but he tried to relax.

"I have your word that there would be no harm done to them?" He asked. Just to make sure.

"I don’t know what kind of people you have been dealing with, but there are rules here," Vadyn waved her hand dismissively. She did not forget to slip in a condescending glance at him, reminding him of his lower origin. "As long as they are peaceful, then they would be fine. And yes, don’t worry, our interrogation method is... peculiar."

Of course, the thought slipped into his mind.

Had it been in the Mortal Realm or even the Spirit Realm, torture would’ve been common.

Barbaric, but it’s an effective method.

If the enforcers lay their hands on Davina or Liliana. If the enforcers even touch a hair on them, then there will be severe consequences. Rex believed the two of them could handle themselves, but even so, he wouldn’t tolerate anything harmful befalling them.

Since this is the God Realm, they must have had a more effective and efficient method.

A few minutes later, Rex arrived at the destination.

He stood before a massive rift located right at the central square of the town.

Just earlier, when the central square came into view, Rex instantly noticed that it was really spacious. It was easily as big as a few soccer fields, but for some odd reason, the people of the town were avoiding crossing the center part of the square.

All of them go around the edges.

Rex soon realized why is that when he approached, and the rift finally came into view.

Nobody could see the rift. At least Rex couldn’t see it, even though he was a few paces away. Only when he stepped into the inner part of the central square did the space suddenly distort, and the rift finally made itself visible to him.

Looking up at the rift, Rex sucked in a cold breath.

As one of the strongest entities in the lower planes, Rex wasn’t foreign to dimensional tear.

In the Mortal Realm, each clash he made against other entities with similar strength would tear the dimensional fabric. Each battle left behind spatial scars that made the level of energy inconsistent, even making things dangerous for those of the lower ranks.

But the rift before him, a grey vertical slit that stretched skyward, was of another dimension.

Rex could tell the amount of energy to create such a tear is beyond what he could fathom.

I wonder whether Ignatius or even Kei Xun could dent the space in here.

"Come on," Vadyn led the way.

Both of them passed many soldiers guarding the rift. Hundreds of them. Some stood in formation along the sides. Others were checking visitors like Rex. And some were being interrogated right on the spot, which was convenient.

Most of the soldiers glanced at their directions.

Not hostile. Curious.

Ranks were evident in their attire, but all of them saluted as Vadyn walked past.

"Who is that with Enforcer Vadyn?"

"Just a random person who crossed over, probably. I knew she was in the area."

"Random person? She wouldn’t escort a random herself like this. The enforcers under her would."

"He looks like someone important."

Rex overheard their conversation and raised a brow.

I thought I wasn’t special? So, there is a reason why she cornered me like that.

Cutting through the crowd of people, Vadyn brought Rex right in front of the rift and pivoted her body, gesturing for Rex to go on ahead like he was a lady. "After you," She said. "Since you’re not originally from the Spirit Realm, you might find the other side better."

Rex stepped into the rift, and the scenery changed immediately.

For once, it felt like stepping into a world that he was familiar with.

Before him was a city that rose in clean lines of glass and steel. Its architecture was modern and vast, one that a human like him was accustomed to. Towering skyscrapers of polished crystal and dark metal reflected the fading light that seamlessly traced the surfaces with precision.

Wide windows revealed illuminated interiors.

Each floor glowed with steady, controlled brilliance.

Rex was standing right on the curb of the main street. Not a trace of disorder lingered. Smooth roads curved alongside the clear lake, sleek vehicles moved in a measured flow, and bridges arched elegantly over the canals.

Every inch was a touch of refined modernity.

Considering the places he had been, seeing this city was a pleasant surprise.

After being driven out of the human territory, his life mostly regressed to that of medieval times. It was mostly around kingdoms, trading towns, and magical places. Not once has he ever seen a glimpse of modernity anywhere.

It was refreshing to come back to the root like this.

"So, this to your liking?" Vadyn’s voice crept from behind as she stood beside him. "That narrows it down quite a lot—the Steel Realm, the Human Dome Realm, or maybe the Mortal Realm. One of those realms is your origin."

Rex didn’t answer.

He only closed his eyes and sucked in a deep breath.

But once he opened his eyes, he realized the sky was broken.

Not a chaotic shatter, but an orderly one. A massive rift with smooth edges stretched across the heavens, splitting into several branching paths. It shifted in a slow manner, as if it were alive. Pale light bled from its fractures, staining the sky in unnatural hues.

Rex then recalled that he didn’t know who exactly he was going to meet.

"Who am I meeting again?"

"You’re meeting the High Lord of the Gamma Cluster."

"Cluster..."

Recalling the Cluster Custodian, which oversees multiple realms within the Primordial Meadow, Rex assumed the High Lord of the Gamma Cluster meant the lord who oversees multiple cities within the Primordial Meadow.

Not quite the Cluster Custodian, but high enough to be able to grant Rex what he needed.

Out of nowhere, a sleek, dark maroon premium sedan appeared right before them.

The driver walked out of the car and opened the backseat door for them, standing with back as straight as an arrow, alert like an uptight bodyguard. He was also an Awakened Demigod, quite strong—though only at one star, unlike Vadyn, who was second-star.

"Let’s go," Vadyn pushed Rex a little.

Rex glanced at her in protest, but decided to let her have it her way.

No traffic along the way. It was smooth sailing across the entire main street, with only a few cars. It did not take Rex long to realize that any car or motorcycle that stopped on the side of the road disappeared, almost as if they were shunted into another dimension to keep the streets clear.

And he also noticed that some buildings have no doors.

People simply created a portal and entered.

"Is this a vital city of some sort?" Rex asked to fill the deafening silence between them.

"Yes," Vadyn nodded.

Rex turned towards her and leaned his head forward a little, gesturing for her to elaborate.

She sighed, annoyed at his questions, but she explained anyway, "You’re in Larta City or the Dark City of Glass Steel. It’s a Hive City that is connected to multiple other smaller cities, as well as the Cavity, where we came.

"Just so you know, if you try anything in this city, you’ll die instantly." She added.

Another unnecessary threat.

Rex rolled his eyes as he wasn’t planning to do anything other than negotiate.

But, of course, Vadyn thought only the worst.

I seriously doubt I couldn’t get away with a crime. But sure. Think what you want.

Once the car stopped, Rex stepped out and looked up. He found himself before a stone spire that stabbed the sky—a height that undoubtedly surpassed even the Great Barricade, one of the tallest structures he had ever seen.

Built around the tip of this tall spire is a massive building that looks like a cathedral of glass.

He followed Vadyn across multiple inspections.

Outer inspections were handled by machines, but the inner checks that led to the heart of the place were conducted by a handful of figures in pristine white robes, like a mixture of a shaman and a priest. Given the aura they radiated, Rex didn’t dare scan them.

It would certainly result in a heavy migraine, which he didn’t want.

And across the entire way, Vadyn didn’t even try to hide her suspicion and made each inspection done twice on him. Even the people in robes couldn’t avoid her demand. "Make sure to double-check," She said, nudging her head at Rex. "I don’t trust him."

"Yes, Enforcer Vadyn."

One of them approached Rex again and gestured for him to enter a room.

"Wow..." Rex looked at Vadyn as he was brought away. "Just wow."

Inside, he was stripped naked and subjected to a thorough inspection. His soul, mind, and body were checked for anything that might threaten the building’s occupants or the High Lord. Unsurprisingly, the robed people found nothing.

Most of his things were stored in his inventory.

For them to find his items are frankly, impossible as even a God couldn’t sense the System.

However, they did ask for his Soul Artifacts.

For the entirety of his interrogation with the High Lord, he must maintain all three of his Soul Artifacts.

If any of them disappeared from their confiscation, then he’d be branded a criminal on the spot.

Quite harsh, but he knew who was to blame.

"Don’t be too angry," the robed woman, with a pleasant smile, patted his sculpted shoulder. "Enforcer Vadyn is still new to her position. She’s still extremely uptight and overly worried about things. Just give her some face."

"Heh," Rex sneered. "Guess I’ll be kind to the newbie."

Hearing this, the robed woman smiled awkwardly.

If Enforcer Vadyn heard that, she would’ve probably flipped out by now.

Once the second inspection was complete, Rex was taken to the highest floor via a lift made entirely of light—a gravitational pull that carried him upward. He could tell that without it, reaching the top floor would be impossible.

He could see that the space was being distorted by the lift as it ascended.

Soon, he arrived in a spacious learning room.

"High Lord Rashal," Enforcer Vadyn saluted. "I’ve brought the visitor."
