Chapter 1012 Responsibility
Chapter 1012 Responsibility
Ling Feng nodded upon hearing that, "Understood, Boss. Rest assured, I will definitely complete this mission flawlessly!"
"You don’t have much time, just get it done as quickly as possible. Once that unknown thing causes any trouble, it’s all on you!" Chen Ping said.
"Really? Why should I take the blame?" Ling Feng exclaimed with widened eyes.
"Because you’re not focusing on your work and you often wander around the campus at night, anyway, you’re a registered student there!" After saying that, Chen Ping immediately hung up the call.
One could tell that he was truly a little annoyed; Ling Feng chuckled and put down the phone.
Turning around, he saw that Zhang Lan had already put on her underwear and was now pulling on her coat.
"You’re leaving now?" Ling Feng asked.
"It’s getting late; there are a lot of things to take care of at the company."
As she spoke, Zhang Lan finished dressing and prepared to leave.
But before she left, she didn’t forget to turn around and say, "By the way, don’t come back to the company with me, just stay here by yourself!"
Ling Feng was stunned: "Why?"
"No reason!"
Zhang Lan gave him a look and then turned to leave.
After thinking about it, Ling Feng realized, she still felt it was inappropriate to show affection in front of her own employees!
After sitting in the room for a while, Ling Feng remembered that he hadn’t told everyone about his trip to the provincial capital, so he took out his phone and made a round of calls.
As it turned out, those who answered didn’t take it seriously at all—just acknowledging with a "got it" and that was it.
Ling Feng was somewhat speechless; he had made a trip out, and yet no one seemed to care!
Glancing at the time—4 p.m., Ling Feng, feeling bored, got up and left the hotel.
Realizing it was inconvenient without a car, he went down to Zhang Lan’s company building and called for a vehicle.
Taking the keys from the staff, Ling Feng drove back to the university.
However, he didn’t drive in. He parked the car outside the deserted surrounding wall and then leaped in with a bound.
It should be dinner time now, and the campus was bustling with people coming and going.
Knowing he looked like a student, Ling Feng roamed around the campus as if nothing was amiss, then headed towards that grove of trees.
By this time, no students were wandering in the grove anymore, having found nothing the whole morning; their patience had long since run out.
Ling Feng entered the grove and quickly located the spot with the footprint, squatting down again.
He still couldn’t forget this place. Previously, that girl named Chen Yan caused a stir, leaving him no time to examine closely; now that no one was around, he could finally take a serious look.
Ling Feng squatted down, closely examining each blade of grass and the soil at the root, trying to deduce the size of the footprint.
But just at that moment, the sound of rustling footsteps came from behind, and he immediately turned to look!
Eyes meeting, both of them were a bit stunned.
It was Chen Yan again!
Ling Feng was speechless, looking at her and asking, "Why is it you again?"
"I should be the one asking! Have you been here the whole afternoon without leaving?" Chen Yan asked with a puzzled look in her wide-open eyes.
"How could that be? I just got here, okay?"
Ling Feng rolled his eyes and then asked, "What are you doing here again?"
Chen Yan didn’t answer him but instead asked back, "What about you?"
"I’m just idling around, came for a stroll!" Ling Feng said.
Chen Yan smiled slightly, "What a coincidence, me too!"
Ling Feng: "..."
Seeing the sly look in the other’s eyes, Ling Feng couldn’t help but sigh in resignation: "Fine, you can wander around then, I’m leaving!"
"Don’t go! Alright, I’ll tell you the truth. I found it strange seeing you skulking around here this morning, so I came back to take a look after class ended in the afternoon. I wanted to see what’s so special about this place!" Chen Yan said.
"Um..."
Ling Feng looked at her: "Is it really okay to be so blunt? What do you mean by ’skulking around’? I was just casually looking, why are you so intensely curious?"
"Yes, I am intensely curious, what about it?"
Chen Yan placed her hands on her hips and then said, "Don’t play dumb with me. I know there’s a reason you’re here; you just don’t dare to tell me, that’s all!"
"Haha, spare me the reverse psychology, okay?"
Ling Feng chuckled bitterly, gazed at her, and said: "Even if I do know something, there’s a reason I’m not telling you, and it’s for your own good. You’re quite a grown-up girl but you’ve got some nerve!"
Chen Yan was taken aback: "What do you mean?"
"What do I mean? It’s eerily quiet in these woods, not a soul around, aren’t you afraid of running into bad people?" Ling Feng sneered.
"You, you..."
Chen Yan’s eyes widened in shock, and she instinctively took a step back, filled with terror.
Ling Feng just wanted to scare her off, so he licked his lips and said, "My, you are really pretty!"
"Ahh!"
Chen Yan was frightened by his look, screamed out loud, and ran away!
Watching her retreating figure, screaming and running out of the woods, Ling Feng shook his head helplessly: "Am I that sleazy? It was just a scare! Is that really necessary?"
Now that he was alone, Ling Feng measured the faint footprint with his hand and obtained the length of a shoe size.
The pair of feet was roughly the same size as his, likely a size 42 shoe.
Of course, that’s assuming the person was wearing shoes.
If not, then the person whose footprints those are would have to be at least over two meters tall!
These data weren’t very useful to Ling Feng; the only definitive thing he could conclude was that the person was definitely male, nothing more!
Thus, he sighed resignedly, stood up, and prepared to leave.
But just then, out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of someone watching him, and he immediately called out: "Who’s there!"
The figure vanished in a flash, disappearing into the thicket.
Unfolding his Divine Sense, Ling Feng noticed a bespectacled boy with a childish face, looking like a freshman at best.
From the other’s running posture and panting breaths, Ling Feng knew he was just an ordinary student.
Barely running a few dozen meters before gasping for air, what a lack of stamina.
Ling Feng didn’t care much, turned around, and walked towards the edge of the woods, musing that this school was indeed a bit different, with quite a few peculiar students. He wondered what his investigation would uncover!
Since it was getting dark, Ling Feng didn’t linger and after leaving, climbed over the wall back to his car, then drove back to the city area.
Later, recalling what Zhang Lan had said, he made a call to Li Yun.
Unexpectedly, the call didn’t go through!
It seemed she must have gone to Nine Heavens after work and had no signal.
Ling Feng dismissed the thought of looking for her, thinking there was plenty of time since he would be in the provincial city for a few days; he could always find her later.
So, he returned to the hotel and went upstairs alone.
A night passed without incident, and the next morning, Ling Feng drove back to the university entrance, spoke to the security guard, and entered the campus.
