Chapter 540 540: 540

BOOM!

A violent crash of thunder tore across the sky while heavy rain began to pour down over the land. Dark clouds churned above the Veydrin estate as if the heavens themselves were restless.

Lightning flashed again and lit up the sky for a brief moment before the storm swallowed everything in darkness once more.

The sound of rain striking the windows and roof echoed loudly through the mansion.

Inside one of the large halls, a faint warmth from the fireplace fought against the cold storm outside.

A man stood near the tall window and looked outside at the raging storm. He took a slow gulp from the cup in his hand while watching the rain pour down the glass.

A strange silence filled the room.

The silence lingered for several seconds before it was broken by Ramos.

He leaned back slightly in his chair and stared toward Kael with narrowed eyes.

"Brat… tell me one thing?"

His tone carried irritation mixed with curiosity.

"You are standing here and having coffee casually only for a divine weapon to attack us in the next moment."

Ramos rubbed his forehead and sighed.

"Tell me it won't happen because I am not sane enough to deal with this shit."

Kael calmly placed the cup back on the table.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Don't worry," he said.

"The Veydrin estate and many other places are concealed by Elaris."

He leaned slightly back in his chair.

"The gods cannot keep an eye on me in those places."

Only after hearing this did Ramos finally relax.

He let out a long breath and leaned back.

"Good," he muttered.

"Because I am too old to deal with divine lightning falling on my head every morning."

Just then a soft voice called out.

"Kael."

Kael turned his head.

Emilia stood near the door.

Her posture looked hesitant, and her eyes carried a mixture of fear and uncertainty.

She looked at Kael carefully before speaking again.

"You… are you our son or is it something else?"

Her voice trembled slightly.

"Did I even give birth to you?"

Her fingers slowly tightened around the hem of her skirt.

"Am I even your mother… or are we just strangers?"

The words came out slowly.

After losing Adele, Kael was the only child she had left. Now even that certainty had begun to shake.

The thought that he might not truly be her son made her heart feel as if it was splitting apart.

Kael watched her quietly for a moment.

Then he stood up and walked toward her.

He stopped in front of her and gently bent down before grabbing her hand.

For a brief moment, even Kael himself paused.

Did he truly have genuine feelings toward her?

He could not say so.

He liked her, but did he truly carry the feelings of a devoted son?

Definitely not.

However, someone like him who had grown up in such a harsh and neglected environment could not ignore kindness.

Any positive feeling was something he accepted willingly.

Kael finally spoke.

"Technically yes."

Emilia looked confused.

Kael continued calmly.

"When a child's body is formed, a soul appears inside it at the end of the fourth month."

He raised his eyes and looked at her.

"But before that soul appeared, the Goddess Elaris placed me inside the child."

He tightened his grip on her hand slightly.

"So from flesh, blood, and even somewhat soul… I am your son."

Kael looked directly into Emilia's eyes.

"You are my mother."

His voice remained steady.

"And whether in the past, present, or future, you are the only person whom the man called Leonard and Kael has given the status of mother."

Emilia felt a sudden jolt of warmth rise in her heart.

For a moment happiness flashed across her face.

But then she paused.

"What about the past?" she asked quietly.

She had heard the name Leonard before, but she did not know the full story.

Before Kael could answer, Ruth spoke.

"He was abandoned."

"Huh!"

Emilia gasped softly and turned toward her husband.

Ruth stood nearby with his arms folded.

His expression remained calm as always.

"Valcrest," he said.

"Like us, Valcrest was a powerful noble house with great status and influence."

He paused briefly.

"However… Leonard was born without talent."

His voice remained cold.

"So he was scorned and abandoned."

Emilia's eyes widened.

She slowly turned toward Kael again.

"For real?"

Kael nodded lightly.

"Yes."

"My mother rejected my birth outright, and my father sent me away from the beginning."

He shrugged slightly.

"Thankfully in this life I was scorned but not abandoned."

The room grew quiet.

Emilia suddenly stepped forward.

She grabbed Kael's head and pulled him into her embrace.

Tears streamed down her face.

"Wuu… wuu…"

Her shoulders trembled.

"The world is so cruel."

Her voice broke as she cried.

"I am sorry… I am really sorry for treating you badly."

Her fingers held his head tightly.

"I should have protected you better."

The guilt in her voice was overwhelming.

Kael, who had faced gods and demons without hesitation, suddenly felt strangely suffocated.

For some reason he did not know how to react.

Slowly he raised his hand and patted her back.

"It's okay, Mother."

His voice softened slightly.

"You didn't mean any of it."

After consoling Emilia for a while, Kael gently stepped back.

Emilia wiped her tears slowly while trying to calm herself. Her breathing was still uneven, but the tightness in her chest had eased slightly after hearing his words.

Kael watched her for a moment to make sure she had settled down. Then he slowly turned his head and looked toward Ruth.

"What about you?" Kael asked.

Ruth had been standing quietly the entire time with his arms folded. His expression remained the same as always, calm and unreadable.

He looked at Kael for a moment before answering.

"I don't care," Ruth said plainly.

His voice carried neither warmth nor hostility.

"As long as you are born into Veydrin, you are Veydrin. That's it."

He paused briefly and then continued.

"As for your matter of dealing with gods and your vendetta, that is your problem to solve."

The room grew quiet again.

Kael stared at him for a moment.

Then he suddenly burst into laughter.

"Hahahaha!"

The sound echoed lightly through the room.

"That's exactly what I expected from you, Father."

His laughter carried genuine amusement. Ruth's blunt and practical response had not surprised him at all.

Ruth simply shrugged slightly and looked away as if the matter was already settled.

As Kael's laughter slowly faded, he noticed movement from the side.

Ramos had stood up from his chair.

The older man stretched his back slightly and then turned toward Kael.

"Kael."

The tone in Ramos's voice was different this time.

It was not sarcastic.

It was not mocking.

It was serious.

Kael's expression changed slightly when he heard it.

Ramos rarely used that tone.

"I have never asked you for anything," Ramos said slowly.

He looked directly into Kael's eyes.

"But this time I need your help."

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"What help?" he asked.

Ramos's jaw tightened.

For a brief moment his eyes darkened as something heavy surfaced in them.

"Help me to kill that man."
