The Fiery Crown Cycle: A Dragon's Rebirth

Chapter 112

Chapter 112

Bianca's bright, shining white eyes blinked twice.

"Get up. We're leaving," Aiden growled.

"Okay-dokey, rawr!" she chirped, scrambling to her feet and dutifully hugging the red magic crystal.

This idiot, Aiden thought, she never learns unless you scare her straight. He looked up, and with a powerful beat of his red wings, launched into the sky.

Bianca spread her wings, her bright eyes looking back at the Wood Elves with profound, lingering hunger. With a pout, she followed.

They actually left. He kept his word.

The priest watched the distant, winged specks vanish, then turned back to his people. He was met by a wall of green eyes. Eyes filled with suspicion, coldness, hatred, and alienation.

Looking at these young, hostile faces, he had a bitter thought. Perhaps the Sun Elves' path was the correct one after all. Wood Elves... ha. A silent, hollow laugh echoed in his mind. A race of fools, drowning in the glories of the past.

There was nothing to say. He turned and walked away. The other elders, their faces grim, followed him.

The young elves remained, frozen in their righteous, useless indignation.

In a vast, empty hall, a single, luxurious white bed rested. Beneath a black silk canopy, two figures were entwined in sleep.

Long, black eyelashes fluttered. Eyes the color of the night sky opened.

A moment later, the figure opposite her also opened her eyes, revealing pure white orbs, pupils spinning slowly, clockwise.

White: What is it?

Black: The prophecy has changed.

White: Whose?

Black: The Wood Elves.

White: ...Insects. Go back to sleep.

Black: Mm.

The night-sky eyes closed.

Aiden scanned the forest canopy below. Should be around here. The griffin bodies were massive; it didn't take long to spot them, a tangle of feathers and broken trees.

He coiled his tail securely around Azure’s limp body on his back, then dove.

He neared the first corpse, talons extended, and snatched it. Ugh. Heavier than it looks. He grunted, adjusting his grip. Can Bianca even carry the other one?

"Bianca!" he roared.

"Rawr?" she chirped, flying over.

"Give the magic crystal to Azure."

"Why, rawr?" Her bright eyes were filled with blatant, unwilling confusion.

Aiden's red eyes narrowed. "Just. Do it."

"Okay-dokey! I'll do it, rawr!" Bianca recoiled, immediately offering the crystal.

"Azure, hold this," Aiden said. Azure's blue maw opened, and she bit down on the basin-sized crystal.

"Now, you grab this one," Aiden commanded, nodding at the second corpse.

Bianca's talons sank in, and her body immediately plummeted. "Aooo! Aiden-rawr, it's so heavy!" Her wings beat furiously, churning the air just to stop the fall.

"Just deal with it!" Aiden roared. "Hold on, and I'll make you something good when we get back!"

"RAWR!"

A new, food-motivated surge of power came from Bianca. Her wings beat, and she slowly, agonizingly, began to gain altitude.

The power of a foodie is truly infinite, Aiden thought, amused. He swooped down and grabbed the other corpse—the male, even heavier.

He launched into the sky, only to see Bianca flying determinedly... in the wrong direction.

Gods, she's an idiot.

He pumped his wings, easily catching up. "You're going the wrong way!"

"Rawr?"

"Follow me, moron."

"Aoo~"

Four hours of grueling flight passed. The distant, gaping maw of their cave-nest finally appeared.

"Huff... huff..." The sound of Bianca's wingbeats was frantic. Aiden glanced over. Her wings were a white blur, and she was barely keeping up.

She's trying, at least. "Bianca, almost there. Just hold on."

"Aoo..." Her reply was weak.

Aiden put on a burst of speed, shot into the cave, and released his claws. The griffin corpse skidded deep into the lair. He landed hard, his own claws scraping rock as he slid to a stop.

"Aiden-rawr!" Bianca's voice was a high-pitched wail.

Before he could turn, WHAM.

He was slammed from behind.

"Ungh!" A pained groan came from his back. It was Azure.

The impact sent him sliding another dozen yards. Clink-clink-clink... The red magic crystal, knocked from Azure's mouth, rolled into the darkness.

Aiden stopped and looked back. It was a perfect pile-up: Bianca, on top of her griffin corpse, which was on top of a very still Azure.

He pushed himself up and nudged Azure's limp head. A faint, steady breath puffed from her nostrils. Okay, not dead. Good. He looked up. Bianca, realizing what she'd done, shrank.

"Get. Off. Now."

"Rawr!" Bianca scrambled off.

Aiden grabbed the griffin in his jaws and flung it into the back of the cave. Thud. He looked at Azure, a rare flicker of pity in his eyes. Poor kid.

He gently angled his body, letting Azure's limp form slide off his wing onto the cave floor. He turned to Bianca, his eyes narrowed. This idiot needs a good bonk...

He stopped. Her white wings were twitching, utterly exhausted.

...Ehhh. Fine. She did work hard.

Bianca shrank, claws digging into the stone, bracing for the hit.

Aiden just raised his claw and... awkwardly patted her on the head.

"Rest. I'll make the food."
