Chapter 2526: The Pit
Chapter 2526: The Pit
"The pits?"
The Guard explained politely, "On the west side of Market Island, a row of big pits was dug. When the Spiritual Energy tides arrive, many people hide inside them, then use a Barrier from a magical treasure to resist the tides. Although the power of the tides can still affect the inside of the pits, the force will be much weaker."
Carson Flores suddenly understood. "When the Spiritual Energy tides come, does everyone hide in the pits?"
The Guard replied, "The pits are limited. Not everyone can hide in them."
"Can’t they just dig more pits?"
Carson blurted this out subconsciously, then saw the strange expression on the Guard’s face, and suddenly had a realization. He widened his eyes and said, "You’re not allowed to dig randomly?"
The Guard answered, "The island is only this big. If everyone comes and digs however they like, the island would probably be dug away in no time. Besides, if everyone dug their own pits, how would any business be done on this island?"
Carson understood.
Since the monopolists want to peel the skin and draw the tendons from everyone’s wallets, how could they possibly let people eat well and sleep soundly, free from the disturbance of the Spiritual Energy tides?
They probably even have the rhetoric prepared: for example, you sinners were sent here to atone for your mistakes, not to come here and find some hole in the ground to sit in and sleep or cultivate in peace!
You came here—how can it be allowed if you don’t suffer?
Can’t bear the suffering?
If you can’t bear it, then go die!
Carson was silent for a few seconds, then asked, "So who gets to stay in the pits?"
"You take turns."
The Guard replied, "Register with the Market Isles Administration Council and you can get in line. When it’s your turn, you can enter and live in there in safety for one day. As for the rest of the time, well, you can only raise your own Barrier outside and tough it out."
"There are patrols on the island. If anyone is caught secretly digging their own hole, they’ll be executed on the spot."
Carson understood. This was the hope the administrators dangled in front of everyone.
If you want the mule to run faster, you have to hang a carrot in front of it.
These regulated pits play a role similar to that carrot. It has to be said, this Suffering Pray Sea really is dark.
Everyone who comes here is a criminal exiled by the Sea God Sect. The rulers here don’t treat them as human at all.
The open market was bustling. Some were hawking goods, some were calling out for teammates, and some sat cross-legged on the ground, motionless like stone statues...
Carson wandered around the entire island and also saw the pits the Guard had mentioned. In the end, he returned again to the Valentine Family Pharmacy.
Everyone here was a mortal exiled by the Sea God Sect. Perhaps a small part were people like Ildan Rollins’s daughter or Lorvian Randall, persecuted and sent here; but most were guilty people who had violated the sect’s rules.
Carson was only a passerby and had no intention of changing anything.
As a Great Land Fairy, it was already good enough if he could protect himself.
Carson settled down at the Valentine Family Pharmacy with an easy mind. Every day he calmly did Alchemy, rested, and when dawn came he would go out for a walk.
In a flash, a month passed. When Carson went out for another stroll and passed by the restaurant entrance, he immediately saw Ildan Rollins standing not far from the door.
Carson felt a surge of joy and walked up to Ildan Rollins.
Seeing Carson, Ildan’s eyes lit up. He was just about to speak when Carson said, "Don’t rush. Let’s talk outside."
The two left the crowd and went to a secluded corner. Only then did Carson ask, "Got news?"
Ildan nodded. "Yes. Someone saw the Saint Heir half a month ago—spotted the Saint Heir on the sea north of Redstone Isle. He seemed to be living on a sea ship..."
"Redstone Isle?"
Ildan explained, "It’s one of the small islands in the penal exile domain. Because all the reefs on the island are dark red, it’s called Redstone Isle. The sea area where the Saint Heir was seen is relatively deep, but there are plenty of sea clams in that stretch of water. I suspect the Saint Heir was there harvesting sea clams. As for whether he’s still there now, I’m not sure..."
Carson frowned. "How long does it take to get to Redstone Isle?"
"Three days!"
Carson did a quick calculation in his mind, then said without hesitation, "Wait for me a moment. We’re going to Redstone Isle!"
