Chapter 386. Sky Serpent

Dragon King's Harem Chapter 386. Sky Serpent

The carriages jolted as they lifted into the air, the wind spell beneath them gently cradling the frames to keep them steady.

I leaned back in my seat, trying to ignore the slight turbulence. The wind spell did its job well enough, keeping the carriages from bouncing too violently, but there was no avoiding the occasional dip or sway. If anyone aboard had a problem with airsickness, they were sure to be miserable before long.

Evelina, sitting beside me, had one hand braced against the seat, her face carefully neutral, though I could see her knuckles whitening slightly. "This is smoother than I expected," she said, though I wasn’t sure if she was convincing herself or me.

"Yeah, smooth," Jyne echoed, though her wide eyes betrayed her unease. She glanced out the window, watching the ground grow smaller beneath us. "But this wobbling… it’s like riding on the back of a drunk Wyvern."

I chuckled softly, feeling a little more at ease with their banter. Despite the turbulence, the journey was relatively calm. The wind spell held, the Wyverns kept a steady pace, and for the most part, things seemed peaceful.

The rhythmic flap of the Wyverns’ wings and the low hum of the spell casting below lulled me into a state of near relaxation. My body leaned further into the seat, eyes fluttering shut.

It was almost evening when I felt Evelina and Jyne shift beside me. The air had grown cooler as we flew higher, and the golden light of suns began to filter through the clouds. But just as I was drifting into a light sleep, a distant roar echoed through the sky, faint but unmistakable. My eyes snapped open, immediately alert.

"What was that?" Evelina whispered, sitting up straighter. Her gaze darted toward the window, her expression tense.

"I heard it too," Jyne added, her voice tight with curiosity and a hint of worry. She leaned toward the window, trying to peer outside.

I frowned, the sound still ringing in my ears. The roar had been faint, distant, but unmistakably full of anger. But we were in the air which made it harder to tell exactly what kind of creature it could be.

"It was too faint to tell," I said, trying to keep my voice calm as I shifted in my seat. "Let’s wait for someone to report. It could be nothing more than a passing monster."

Evelina’s brows furrowed as she glanced at me. "A passing monster doesn’t usually roar like that," she murmured, her tone skeptical. "It sounded like something’s really pissed off."

Jyne was still glued to the window, her eyes searching the horizon. "Maybe it's one of the wyverns?” she suggested, though her tone was uncertain. "Maybe they're fighting something?"

I shook my head. "We’ll know soon enough. If it’s anything serious, Eir will let us know."

Minutes passed. The Wyverns continued their flight without interruption.

Finally, the door of the carriage rattled slightly, and I heard the unmistakable sound of wings flapping. Eir’s familiar figure appeared just outside, his dragon wings spread wide as he perched on the edge of the door. He glanced inside with a calm but serious expression. I met his gaze and nodded, signaling him to enter.

Eir opened the door quickly, and a gust of wind swept inside, ruffling our hair and making Jyne squeak in surprise. He was inside in an instant, closing the door behind him to seal the wind out again.

“What happened?” I asked immediately, not wasting any time.

Eir’s face was grim as he glanced at me, then at the others. "There’s a monster nearby. We think it’s a Sky Serpent."

Jyne gasped. "A Sky Serpent? That’s bad news." She clutched at her seat, her face paling slightly.

Eir nodded. "It seems to have been disturbed by something. It’s still a ways off, but it’s moving closer, fast. I sent a few scouts to get a better look, but we might need to change our route if it gets any nearer."

Evelina leaned forward, her expression serious. "Can we avoid it? Or will it come straight at us?"

Eir shifted uncomfortably, his wings rustling as he stood. "That’s the tricky part. From what we’ve seen, there’s only one Sky Serpent, but they’re known for traveling in pairs or sometimes in threes. So, it’s possible there are more nearby, but we haven’t spotted any others yet." He ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated. "The problem is that the serpent’s erratic. It’s not flying directly at us, but it’s moving in a pattern that makes it unpredictable."

I frowned. Sky Serpents were no joke, massive creatures with wings that spanned the length of several carriages, their scales harder than steel, and their speed in the air unmatched by most creatures. Their erratic flight patterns made them even more dangerous. If there was one nearby, let alone a few, this could turn into a serious problem.

“How many have you seen for sure?” I asked, my voice low but firm, locking eyes with Eir.

He shook his head, his frustration evident. “Just one so far, Your Majesty. But like I said, there could be more. We haven’t seen another disturbance yet, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. I’ve sent scouts to check for any others, but they haven’t reported back yet.”

Jyne’s face had gone pale. "This is bad. I mean… I’ve heard stories about Sky Serpents—" She stopped, her eyes wide with concern, not finishing the sentence, but the fear was clear.

Evelina placed a hand on Jyne’s arm, trying to calm her. "It’s not a sure thing there are more," she said softly, though I could hear the tension in her voice too. "Let’s not panic before we know."

I crossed my arms, my mind racing. "Can we alter our route?" I asked Eir. "If we’re not directly in its path yet, we might be able to avoid a confrontation altogether. The last thing we need is to get into a fight with something like that while we’re transporting the wounded." Sky Serpent was basically half dragon despite their class was still a serpent.
