The Devil Who Claimed Me

Chapter 22: Mila’s another friend

Chapter 22: Mila’s another friend

The next day, Mila brought him to a clinic. Dominic’s face was half covered with a mask. Through the sunglasses he had put on, he scanned the surroundings vigilantly.

Nothing suspicious was noticed.

When he noticed the surveillance camera mounted on the top of the entrance, he lowered his head instantly.

"Let’s get in." Mila linked her arm around his and guided him inside.

"Mila?"

She turned, her face instantly lighting up.

A young man in a tailored white coat approached them. He was tall, well-groomed, and confident. His smile was bright.

"Max." She moved in closer. "You disappeared after graduation. And then I recently heard you ran this clinic. You didn’t contact me."

Max laughed. "It’s been years. And you still talk too much and scold people like a professor."

Mila giggled. "And you taunt me just like before," she shot back playfully.

When Dominic saw them talking and laughing effortlessly, he felt something tightening in his chest.

"How have you been?" Mila asked.

"Doing fine. And you?"

"Well." She shrugged casually. "I am working at the City General."

"Hmm." Max nodded. "I heard that you are a promising heart surgeon now."

"I’m still learning from my mentor, Dr. Holmes," she replied modestly. "You are the real hero. Becoming one of the best neurologists in the nation at this age is commendable."

"You are flattering me now."

"No, I’m telling the truth."

They kept on talking, and Dominic felt out of space. He really didn’t like the way Mila talked to the man so freely. She looked comfortable with Max as if she had found her soulmate.

They both were doctors, old friends who went to the same medical college. It seemed like they were made for each other.

Max was the kind of man who really deserved Mila, who would value her, keep her happy, nothing like that cheater, Ethan.

Dominic felt small in front of him, unworthy. He wondered if he could ever compete with this man. Fire of jealousy ignited in his heart.

Max finally turned to Dominic. "And this?"

"Oh, he is my boyfriend." Mila linked her arm with Dominic’s.

"Boyfriend?" Max looked surprised. Before he could ask further, Mila reasoned why they had come.

"I brought him here for check up. He was in an accident a few days ago," she explained everything about that night. "Now, he has this amnesia. Please check on him. You are the best in this field. I’m sure you will heal him and help him recover his memory."

Max hummed thoughtfully. "You should have taken him to the hospital right away and have done the tests."

Mila glanced at Dominic, who also looked at her.

"Anyway, since you are here, I’ll run the tests. And for his amnesia, I have to check him first." Max held up his hand and called someone.

A female attendant approached. "Take him for a thorough check-up. I need the reports as soon as possible."

The woman nodded and turned to Dominic. "This way, sir." She gestured for him to follow her.

Dominic didn’t move from his place. He was hesitant to leave Mila alone with that doctor, insecure.

Mila gave him a reassuring smile. "Go and do the tests. It won’t take long. I’ll be waiting for you here."

’This is what I don’t want,’ Dominic mused, but couldn’t say it out loud. But he wouldn’t say no and upset her. Reluctantly, he followed the attender.

"Come. Let’s sit in my office." Max took Mila into his office. Once they took their seats, he called someone. "Bring two cups of coffee."

Putting the phone aside, Max turned his attention to Mila. "You called him your boyfriend. I thought you were with Ethan Shaw. What happened? Did you break up with him already?"

Mila’s mouth twisted at the mention of Ethan. "Yes, I dumped him."

"Really?" Max chuckled with amusement. "Back then, you were so much in love with Ethan that you never looked at another man. When I heard you finally started dating him, I thought it was a lifetime commitment. But you parted with him. That’s unexpected."

Mila clenched her fists under the table. Whenever she recalled how stupid she had been to put her faith in him, her blood boiled.

"He cheated on me," she muttered. "I ended things with him immediately."

"Cheating?" Max was surprised. "Hell, that bastard. He doesn’t know what he has lost already."

He cast her a curious look. "And this new boyfriend. How is he? Does he treat you well?"

Mila had only known him for a few days, but she had a feeling that she had known him forever. Just recalling his name brought her smile back.

"I don’t know much about him," she said dazedly. "But he is good, caring, protective. I just want him to heal quickly and recover his memory."

Max frowned, stunned to realize that she had been dating a complete stranger who seemed to have lost his memory from an accident.

"Mila, are you sure about him?" he asked, worry seeping into his tone. "You barely know him, and you have made him your boyfriend. Don’t be rushed. He may be worse than Ethan and give you unforgettable pain."

Hearing he was speaking ill of Dominic Mila was unhappy. "Listen, Max. I admire you for your talent. And I truly appreciate our friendship. I trusted you, so I brought my boyfriend here. And you are trying to poison my mind against him."

"No, that’s not true," Max said urgently. "You misunderstood me. I’m worried you’d end up hurt again. I’m only cautioning you. Before you make a commitment, think carefully and try to see things clearly. Or you will be deceived again."

At that, Mila’s expression turned thoughtful. She had once been deceived. She didn’t want to go through the same experience again. But with Dominic, she didn’t have this feeling that he would ever hurt her.

She dismissed the doubts before they could take hold of her heart. ’Everyone is not the same. Big guy will never betray me,’ she thought.

After the scans, Dominic stepped out to the waiting area and froze.

Mila and Max were sitting close on the sofa, leaning toward each other, deep in conversation.

Max said something animatedly, gesturing with his hands. Mila laughed heartily.

Dominic felt heat surge through his veins. His mind started to imagine unnecessary scenarios.

’How often did they meet before? Has Max ever confessed his feelings for Mila? Has she ever considered him?’

His jaw tightened so hard that it almost hurt. He walked toward them deliberately.

"Mila."

Mila turned. "Oh, you are done already."

Max also stood up, his gaze assessing Dominic. "You need to wait for some time for the report."

Mila was not in a hurry. "Okay, we can wait."

"I’m tired," said Dominic flatly, eyes on Mila.

Mila sensed the tension in his voice. She thought he was really tired. "Alright. Then we should leave. Max, send me the report later."

"Of course," Max replied with a smile. "We’ll keep in touch."

She laughed softly. "We will."

Dominic’s patience snapped internally. He wanted to punch the man and wipe that smile off his face. But before he could do anything, Mila held his hand and took him out.

The moment they came out of the clinic, Dominic turned to Mila.

’Who is that man?’ The question was about to come out of his mouth, but the ringing of Mila’s phone halted him.

Mila glanced at the screen. When she saw her father’s name, her features twisted.
