Chapter 104: She was part of my mission
Chapter 104: She was part of my mission
A stunned silence fell over the dungeon.
"Mila didn’t betray me," Dominic said. "She was forced. Threatened. Yet she came to me and told me everything."
No one spoke.
"She didn’t leak any information," he continued. "I was the one who told her to approach that woman and pass the intel. It was part of my plan to trap Marco."
Valentina’s mouth fell apart. She realized she had mistaken the situation.
"She was part of my mission," Dominic added. "She was helping me."
But Serene shook her head violently. "No... I don’t believe this," she snapped. "You are saying this to protect her."
Dominic’s gaze turned icy. "So you think I’m lying?"
Serene’s expression froze. She knew she had crossed a line, but her pride wouldn’t let her back down. She opened her mouth to reason. Before she could speak again, Dominic cut her off.
"You’d rather cling to your jealousy than accept the truth," he said coldly. "You are blinded by your insecurity. Even if the truth stands right in front of you, you won’t see it."
Serene tried to say something, but he spoke again.
"Mila had every chance to deceive me," Dominic continued. "She could have stayed silent and worked against me. Instead, she told me everything—how Marco threatened her to kill her friend and forced her into this."
Dominic moved his sharp eyes from Serene to Valentina. "If it weren’t for Mila, I wouldn’t have known about that woman. And through her, I tracked down the rest of the spies."
Valentina’s jaw slacked open as the words sank in. It turned out that Dominic had known all along.
He had stayed silent... just to execute the plan.
The last trace of doubt in her mind vanished.
"I’m so close to bringing Marco down," Dominic muttered. "Without her, it wasn’t possible. But you..."
He turned his glare back to Serene. "You wanted to kill her while I wasn’t around. Who permitted you?"
Serene staggered back a step. "I... I thought she was a traitor—"
"Even if she was," Dominic cut in sharply, "it’s not your place to decide her fate. I’m still alive. I decide who lives and who dies. But you took the charge. You wanted to destroy her."
"No, no..." Serene’s lips trembled. "I was just concerned about you—"
"That’s enough," Dominic said, silencing her. "I don’t want to hear anything."
He looked at Valentina. "Take her away."
Valentina nodded. She grabbed Serene and pulled her toward the exit.
"Dominic, listen to me—" Serene cried. "I didn’t mean to... I was really concerned about you."
"Be quiet," Valentina whispered in her ear. She wrapped an arm around her waist and took her out.
"But he is..."
"He is furious," Valentina cut in sharply. "Can’t you see it?"
That silenced Serene.
As they walked out, Valentina added in a lower voice, "We misunderstood her. She told us the truth, and we didn’t listen."
Serene gritted her teeth, anger still burning inside her. "How could we trust her? But Dominic..."
Her gaze dropped to her injured hand. Blood still seeped through her fingers.
"He shot me."
Valentina sighed. "Come. Let’s get that treated first. We’ll talk later."
She led her to the clinic.
Inside the dungeon...
Dominic knelt beside Mila, his expression softening instantly. He gently brushed his fingers against her swollen cheek.
"I am sorry. I should have been more careful. I should have protected you better."
Mila broke down, tears spilling freely. "I was so scared... I thought I’d never see you again."
Dominic pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. "I’m here," he whispered. "You are safe now."
Mila clung to him, her trembling slowly easing. Then she remembered about his secret mission. She pulled back.
"Your mission? What happened to it?"
Dominic didn’t say anything. He hesitated for a moment, then mustered a smile. "Let me take you out of here first."
In his bedroom...
He placed her gently on the bed, his gaze lingering on her injuries. Guilt flickered in his eyes.
"I’ll call Remy," he said, reaching for his phone.
"There is no need." Mila stopped him. "I am a doctor. I know how to take care of myself."
She took his hands in hers. "I don’t need Remy. You are here. That’s enough for me."
Dominic cupped her face and kissed her. "I am relieved that you are alright," he whispered against her lips.
Mila put her hands over his. "How did you know?"
"Valentina called me," he replied. "She said you were a spy. I knew what would happen next."
His jaw tightened.
"I tried to stop her, but the signal was bad. The call dropped before I could tell her anything. So I came straight back."
"And the mission?" Mila asked quietly.
"It’s on hold."
Mila’s heart warmed as she thought he had abandoned everything for her.
"It’s because of me..." she said with guilt in her heart. "You waited so long for this. And when the moment came, you left everything."
"Don’t blame yourself. You are more important. And for Marco—I’ll deal with him anyway."
He brushed his thumbs over her cheeks, looking at her regretfully. "I want to be with you. But I need to go. My team needs me."
Mila swallowed her emotions and nodded. "Go. Don’t worry about me."
"I’ll double the security. No one will touch you again."
Mila forced a smile and nodded. She believed him.
Dominic reluctantly pulled back. "Alright. I’ll leave now."
"Stay safe," she whispered.
"You too..."
Dominic’s eyes lingered on her for a moment longer before he turned around and walked out. The moment he stepped into the hallway, his expression changed.
The softness in his eyes was gone. The fire returned in them.
He dialed Lucas as he walked down the hallway.
When the call connected, he said, "Everything is settled here. I’m coming."
"We are already on the move," Lucas said.
"What?" Dominic exclaimed, his steps coming to an abrupt halt. "I told you to wait, not to take any action. Then why?"
"We don’t have time," Lucas snapped from the other end. "We can’t miss the opportunity. Or the entire plan will fail."
"But you should have listened to me."
"Dominic, we are already in. I can’t talk now."
Beep
"Fuck..." Dominic clenched his jaw, unease settling in his chest. But more than that, he was worried. "I need to get there."
He hurried away.
