Chapter 499: The only guest that matters
Chapter 499: The only guest that matters
As the clock struck past seven-thirty, luxury cars rolled through the gates one after another. Golden lights cascaded from the balconies like waterfalls of stars, illuminating the lush gardens below. The maids and butlers moved with refined precision between guests carrying trays of champagne and delicate wine, signalling at the start of the birthday celebration."Dr. Yang! What an honor to finally meet you again!"
"Mrs. Yang, you look even younger than last year!"
Yang Bingqing nearly rolled her eyes. The man praising her youth had spent the previous year attempting to impress Yang Cheng in securing a director’s position in one of the hospitals owned by the Yang family.
"You are too kind," she smiled sweetly.
A second later she turned around and whispered to her husband. "That fox only came because he wants to practically own the hospital in Shanghai."
Yang Cheng calmly sipped his tea, the least bothered. "Hm."
Another guest approached. Then another. And another. By the time thirty minutes had passed, a small crowd had formed around the Yang family - Business partners. Investors. Politicians. Socialites. Friends. Enemies pretending to be friends.
Everyone had arrived carrying agendas hidden beneath their smiles. Such was the nature of high society. A birthday party was never just a birthday party. It was networking and expanding influence.
Across the living room, Bojing was already being dragged into conversations against his will.
"Assistant Bojing! How is Dr. Yang’s schedule these days?"
Bojing trembled. "V-Very scheduled."
He was searching for Zexi the entire time but only found himself entangled among a horde of guests - until Shilin came to his rescue.
"Senior Lu," he stood behind him, his lips curved into his signature pleasant smile. "I heard Mrs. Yang is looking for you."
"R-Really?"
"Yes," Shilin then glanced at the guests - out of which, the female guests could barely register Shilin’s handsomeness. Their faces flushed such a deep red as though already deeply intoxicated.
"Apologies, but he is required somewhere else."
"O-Of course, of course! By the way...who you might be? I have never seen you before," a woman boldly initiated conversation.
"I recently joined Dr. Yang’s lab as an intern and have been studying under Senior Lu. I am very fortunate to learn from such an amazing and talented senior."
"I-I-I...am not t-that amazing."
"You are," he flashed another smile at the guests. "Please ignore him. Senior Lu is too humble and modest."
"Hahahaha, I could see that."
Meanwhile, Yang Bingqing had become trapped between three wealthy ladies discussing jewelry. Only Yang Cheng remained untouched as nobody possessed enough courage to approach the silent and private man for longer than necessary.
And then there was the birthday boy himself - the center of attention, who looked thoroughly unimpressed.
"Dr. Yang. Happy Birthday."
"Thanks."
"How have you been?"
"Somehow alive."
The businessman awkwardly laughed. Mingshen didn’t. The conversation died shortly afterward. His gaze drifted beyond the living room once again. After the tenth time, Wei appeared beside him carrying a glass of juice.
"You have looked at the entrance thirteen times in the last six minutes."
Mingshen accepted the juice. "I was stretching my neck."
Wei nodded. "You are waiting for Jia."
"I am not."
"I see."
The calm response irritated him more than an accusation would have. "She is late."
"Mishen!" The twins and pride of Wei’s life - Limei and Weiyun, trotted towards Mingshen.
"Appy Budday!"
"Appy Buddy," Weiyun copied his sister.
He raised his brow. "Thanks."
The twins climbed on his lap without reservation and rolled on his thighs as if they were their personal playground.
"Happy birthday, evil doctor!" Lihua said cheerily. But then she pouted a second later. "Why aren’t you smiling on your own birthday?"
He sneered. "I see you brought my birthday present, but whatever it is, it would be a disappointment for me. The real present I am looking forward to is experimentation on you."
"..."
"Don’t spout poison at least on your birthday!" Her nostrils flared.
"Just forget about him, Lihua," Huojin joined in, grinning. "The doctor is cranky because of a certain someone’s absence."
"What do you mean?" She blinked. "Oh, and where is sis? I have not seen her anywhere."
The mention of Jia only deepened his brooding and the dark clouds over his head turned stormier.
"Um...Hello."
Mingshen looked up, finding the soft voice that belonged to Yuming.
"Weren’t you with Shilin?"
"Yes, yes. But he went away with Bojing somewhere, so...I thought to wish you myself. Happy birthday."
He shrugged. "Thanks."
Yuming nervously raised his present towards him. "This is for you. Hope you like it. It’s not just for your birthday but also for taking care of me all these years. I would have died if not for you."
He took it and kept it aside. "That’s what a doctor does."
Huojin chuckled. "I don’t think you would say the same for Jia~ Wasn’t she the most special patient of all?"
Yuming glanced back and forth between the two. "...I heard you would have u-used her heart to save me?"
Lihua glared. "As if! I would have killed this evil doctor had he done so!" She then realized. "Oh wait, I mean nothing against you. But it’s my sister, after all..."
Mingshen sneered. "Talking about bloodshed on my birthday? I see you are slowly getting colored in the underworld’s colors too~"
Her brow twitched.
Mingshen looked up at her. "That was just the last option."
Lihua trembled. "H-How could you even think of that as the last option?"
"But then I changed my mind and no way was I going to use Spicy. It would be such a shame for her to die so soon. I hadn’t even properly explored my bodily functions with her."
"What perverted things are you saying about my sis!" She glared.
Mingshen turned to her slowly, gazing into her eyes while recalling the shower sex with Jia which she had initiated.
He smiled. "I would say your sister is more perverted than me, little chili. Just like the spice she is."
"What do you mean?" She frowned.
"That’s why kids shouldn’t stay up late for parties and go to bed early. Protects their intelligence."
"..."
Huojin chirped. "When is the celebration starting? I am in the mood for some dessert~"
Mingshen looked at the time that said a few minutes past eight.
"Nope. Nothing will begin until Spicy returns."
