Chapter 770 - 752: I Am Not a Slut 63
Chapter 770 - 752: I Am Not a Slut 63
The men at the table ran out of liquor, Uncle Jiang called Aunt Jiang to fetch some, and she got up to go indoors.
Third Aunt quickly followed after her: "I’ll go take a look too, can’t let them drink too much."
Once inside, Third Aunt tugged at Aunt Jiang: "Elder Sister-in-Law, do you believe those things Pingping said?"
Aunt Jiang chuckled: "She’s just bragging. Would a truly wealthy family want someone with Ningning’s looks? What mother-in-law likes a daughter-in-law who looks like a demon? The daughters-in-law that wealthy families take must have respectable appearances, looking stable and reliable. Even in ancient times during the selection of imperial consorts, they would choose the kind and virtuous types."
Third Aunt nodded vehemently: "Anning doesn’t even look like a decent woman, anyway, our family definitely won’t choose someone like her as a daughter-in-law."
Aunt Jiang snorted coldly: "God knows she might end up finding a son-in-law who’s both old and poor. Pingping would be ashamed of it, so she’s puffing us up. Didn’t she say the two families were going to meet during the first lunar month? Let’s ask about the time later, we’ll go too. I want to see what kind of catch she can really make."
Third Aunt was also energized: "I’ll ask later, I’ll go take a look too. A man who’s doing a Ph.D. in medical sciences, he could well be over thirty, and you never know how old he might look."
The two exchanged a smile, and Aunt Jiang brought out a bottle of liquor.
When they sat back down at the table, Third Aunt asked Mrs. Jiang: "Second Sister-in-Law, when is Ningning’s beau’s family coming over? Our family isn’t without its members, so we’d like to go have a look too, to support our Ningning."
Mrs. Jiang smiled: "They said it’ll be during the first lunar month, but the date isn’t set yet. We’re waiting to see when the in-laws can make it."
"That’s it, you have to let us know once you’ve set the date, you know. Haiyang just bought a car; he can drive us over, it won’t take too much time."
Third Aunt reminded her again.
Mrs. Jiang nodded: "We’ll definitely tell you, we’ll need your help keeping things in check then."
Aunt Jiang turned around and asked An Nan: "Nannan, do you have a partner yet?"
An Nan pursed her lips and smiled: "Yes, once the second eldest’s in-laws have visited, we’ll need to meet with the parents on our side too."
"That’s great news."
Aunt Jiang said with a fake smile.
Anna asked: "What does the eldest brother-in-law do?"
An Nan didn’t boast: "His family used to be butchers."
Aunt Jiang’s mouth corners drooped downward.
"Butchering pigs isn’t bad. At least there won’t be shortage of meat in the future."
Third Aunt’s laugh was full of implication.
"That’s for sure, there won’t be a shortage."
Mrs. Jiang joined in the laughter: "Before the New Year, the eldest brought us a lot of meat, and also home-made sausages and such. Our house definitely won’t lack these in the future."
An Ping then said: "Right, we brought some sausages over. Aunt Jiang, you should try them when you have guests next time. They taste really good, no coloring or additives; feels safe to eat."
"Good, I’ll prepare some for your uncle’s visit tomorrow."
Auntie Jiang quickly joined the conversation and asked An Nan, "Which village is his family from? How’s their financial situation?"
An Nan honestly replied, "His family was originally from the suburbs, but when N City expanded, their area was demolished. They used to have a huge house because of their pig-slaughtering business, with several hundred square meters. They also owned some land, which got compensated for when the demolition happened. Now, they have two buildings in N City, one residential and one office building, both of which are rented out. Apart from those, they have more than ten storefronts, and also..."
Auntie Jiang and the third aunt froze there again.
Mrs. Jiang couldn’t be happier: "Why bother talking about his family? We don’t care about his background. As long as the kids are happy, we’re happy too. Come on, everyone, have another drink. If we’re here for anything, it’s for everyone to have a joyous year."
Mrs. Jiang certainly was over the moon.
But Auntie Jiang and the third aunt couldn’t find it in themselves to be happy.
Mrs. Jiang deliberately teased Grandma Jiang.
She leaned over to Grandma Jiang and flaunted her new clothes: "Mom, look at my new clothes. This sweater alone is worth a few thousand, and this velour coat nearly reaches ten thousand. They were all bought by my second daughter’s partner. He spent half a day shopping with me without a single complaint. He has a good eye for fashion; the clothes he chose for me look great when I wear them."
She then pointed to the pearl necklace around her neck: "This was purchased by my Eldest with the money she earned. I didn’t want it, but she insisted on buying it for me."
She lifted her hand, showing off a diamond ring on her right hand’s ring finger: "This is part of a set; Third bought them for me and her dad. She said we didn’t get rings when we got married, so now she’s making up for it. Everything I’m wearing was not bought by me. Ah, I never expected to raise three daughters who are all so filial. See, having daughters is great; their partners are all such good people too. The second daughter’s partner even accompanies me to the market, helping me pick vegetables and fruits. Whenever there’s anything to do at home, he’s always there to lend a hand. He’s really nice, and when we go out, people ask if he’s my son... Now I think about it, raising daughters was the right choice. What a blessing..."
Grandma Jiang’s face turned dark.
Auntie Jiang and the third aunt’s faces were ashen.
The dinner was tough for Auntie Jiang and the third aunt; they felt sour inside, while Grandma Jiang was fuming. Mrs. Jiang, however, was able to release years of pent-up frustration. On the way home, she was all smiles and laughter.
She even said to Mr. Jiang.
"You didn’t see the faces of the Eldest and Third’s families today, served them right. Back when they had sons, they were so proud it was as if they’d reached the heavens. They didn’t do any housework, pushed it all onto me, and strutted around the village with their sons all day. They’d tell me that without a son, there’s no one to provide for your old age, pah! I may not have sons, but my three daughters are better than their three sons. You used to be so hung up about not having a son, feeling like you couldn’t even raise your head in the village, that’s why we left, right? How about now, still want a son?"
Mr. Jiang didn’t dare to say he still wanted a son, quickly waving his hands: "No, no, not anymore. These three ladies are wonderful, simply marvelous, and chirpy as can be."
Third objected: "Dad, do you think we’re frogs?"
"Meow," Xiao Hua chimed in for Third.
"I’m praising you, aren’t I?"
Mr. Jiang scratched his head, all smiles too: "Daughters aren’t bad at all. Our three daughters turned out well, and their future husbands won’t be any less fantastic. Not to mention the second son-in-law, he’s really something, chatty and engaging. We can talk about anything, and he’s got an impressive presence; it’s impressive to be seen out and about with him."
Third gave Mr. Jiang a glare: "That’s a son-in-law, not a dog."
Mrs. Jiang thought about Wei Jiaming: "The Eldest’s partner is also good-looking, graceful and refined, quite a feast for the eyes."
Third contemplated whether their parents were really just "face-connoisseurs" and whether she’d need to find a good-looking partner in the future.
Xiao Hua also bowed her head, pondering.
In a villa, Gu Kai came out of his study and started looking at himself in the mirror in the cloakroom.
He scrutinized his face from all angles – his eyebrows and eyes weren’t bad, his face shape was pretty good, nose quite prominent, and his lips were neither too thin nor too thick, just right. His appearance could really be shown off, quite impressive to be seen out and about with.
