Chapter 1221 - 1194: A Pet’s Fateful Encounter 1
Chapter 1221 - 1194: A Pet’s Fateful Encounter 1
Yu Xin was really, really anxious, and really worried.
She searched every place in the compound she could think of, but still couldn’t find Dingding.
She kept running around the complex, calling Dingding’s name as she ran.
Usually, the moment she called, Dingding would meow in reply; no matter where she was, as long as she heard Yu Xin’s voice, she would run out to find her. But now there wasn’t a sound. Yu Xin ran through every patch of grass, every flowerbed, every corner of the walls in the whole compound, and there was still no sign of Dingding at all.
She called Fang Zeyang.
Fang Zeyang said he’d be there right away.
Yu Xin didn’t stop while waiting for Fang Zeyang. She wanted to search the compound all over again. Maybe Dingding had curled up somewhere and fallen asleep; maybe in the next second, as long as she called, Dingding would come out.
Her throat was almost hoarse from shouting, but she still forced herself not to stop and rest.
Whenever Yu Xin ran into some elderly residents of the compound, she would ask, "Grandma, have you seen my Dingding?"
"Grandpa, have you seen Dingding?"
"Auntie, have you seen a calico cat?"
She also took out her phone and pulled up Dingding’s photo to show people.
But all the answers she got were that no one had seen her.
Fang Zeyang arrived very quickly.
When he saw Yu Xin he also looked anxious. "Xinxin, what’s wrong?"
The moment Yu Xin saw Fang Zeyang, she started to cry.
She sobbed miserably. "Zeyang, I can’t find Dingding. I don’t know where she went. I’ve looked all over the compound and I still can’t find her."
Fang Zeyang reached out and pulled Yu Xin into his arms. "Don’t cry, it’s okay. Maybe she’s not in the compound. Maybe she ran out somewhere."
Yu Xin shook her head. "No, Dingding is very well-behaved. She wouldn’t just run off. Besides, the compound is so big, it wouldn’t be easy for her to get out even if she wanted to."
The compound where Yu Xin lived was extremely large. It was an old complex, but it had been one of the very first high-end neighborhoods built in Huacheng back in the day. Not only was the area big, the landscaping was excellent. There was an artificial lake in the compound and lots of scenic zones; it was built like a garden. Even now, the property prices there were still sky-high.
"Then I’ll help you look again."
Fang Zeyang helped Yu Xin over to a stone bench by the path and sat her down. "You rest here for a bit, I’ll go look for Dingding."
"Okay."
Yu Xin was completely at a loss; whatever Fang Zeyang said, she just listened. "I’ll send you Dingding’s photo. Ask around as much as you can."
Fang Zeyang nodded. Yu Xin sent the photo to his phone. When he lowered his head and looked at the picture, a flash of anger crossed his eyes.
He hated that cat Dingding to the core. If it weren’t for Dingding, he would have proposed to Yu Xin long ago and she’d have said yes.
Fang Zeyang was Yu Xin’s boyfriend. The two of them had liked each other since high school, officially got together after the college entrance exam, and had been together for more than two years now. Their relationship had always been good. When Yu Xin’s grandmother passed away, Fang Zeyang stayed by her side through it all, and afterwards he kept accompanying and taking care of her.
In other people’s eyes, Fang Zeyang treated Yu Xin very well, and their relationship was the kind that made others envious.
Yu Xin thought so too.
More than once, Fang Zeyang had said he wanted to marry Yu Xin as soon as possible, start a family together, let Yu Xin feel the warmth of a home. But every meticulously prepared proposal of his had been ruined by that damn cat Dingding.
This made Fang Zeyang extremely annoyed with Dingding. His anger had piled up to this point, and the last time he tried to coax Yu Xin into bed, Dingding had sabotaged him again. Fang Zeyang couldn’t take it anymore. This time, while Yu Xin wasn’t home, he fed Dingding some food laced with a bit of sedative, drugged her unconscious, and took her out to dump her.
He had deliberately left Dingding no way to live.
When he threw Dingding away, he hurled her hard into the river under the bridge.
That river was a big one flowing through Huacheng, and the current was swift. A little cat like Dingding falling into the Water could basically be said to have almost no chance of survival.
After dumping Dingding, Fang Zeyang thought that no one would be able to stop him from marrying Yu Xin anymore. He was smug, but he still had to put on an act of worry and concern for Yu Xin, playing the role of a warm, deeply-in-love boyfriend to the very end.
Fang Zeyang walked around the compound once, asking a lot of people, but everyone said they hadn’t seen Dingding.
He went back to Yu Xin looking all dejected and said apologetically, "I’m sorry, Xinxin, I... I didn’t find Dingding."
When Yu Xin heard that Dingding still hadn’t been found, she couldn’t help covering her face and crying.
"Where do you think she went? Do you think someone caught her? I heard there are lots of people who torture cats, and some even catch cats and dogs to kill and eat them. Dingding wouldn’t..."
"She wouldn’t, she wouldn’t."
Fang Zeyang hurriedly sat down to comfort Yu Xin. "Don’t worry, maybe she’ll be back soon."
Yu Xin’s eyes were all red from crying; she looked pitiful to the extreme. She rubbed her eyes. "I’ll go look for Dingding outside. Maybe she’s out there."
"I’ll go with you."
Fang Zeyang was sure Dingding couldn’t be found anymore, but that didn’t stop him from playing the good guy now.
Yu Xin didn’t take Fang Zeyang’s car and insisted on walking.
Fang Zeyang had no choice but to go along with her.
The two of them searched for about another two hours. Only when Yu Xin was so exhausted she really couldn’t walk anymore did Fang Zeyang finally persuade her to go back.
Once they took the elevator upstairs, Yu Xin opened the door to home. As soon as the door swung open, she heard a familiar sound, and the next second, a chubby calico cat leapt into her arms.
"Dingding."
There was a heavy weight in her arms, but her heart suddenly felt light.
She was smiling, calling Dingding’s name with particular affection. "Where did you run off to? You bad cat, going out to play and not even saying a word..."
Anning nestled in Yu Xin’s arms, flicked her tail, and opened her mouth in a big yawn.
She was truly worn out. She’d run back from the outskirts; even though she’d hitched some rides along the way, don’t forget she wasn’t human now—she was a cat. Coming back over such a long distance, and then, once she got to the door of home, still having to jump up and use her paws to punch in the code... it really was asking a lot of a cat.
"Tired, huh."
Yu Xin smiled as she smoothed Anning’s fur. "Serves you right for running off to mess around. Be good, come with big sis, big sis will give you a bath and then we’ll go to sleep."
"Xinxin."
Fang Zeyang’s face looked terrible now.
The moment he saw Dingding, he could barely hold back the gloom and rage in his heart.
How had this damned cat come back again?
Hadn’t he thrown her into the river?
How was it that she wasn’t dead, and even managed to make it back from that far away?
No, how did she even find her way back to home?
The more Fang Zeyang thought about it, the angrier he got, with a guilty conscience mixed in, and a hint of fear as well.
He kept feeling that this cat Yu Xin raised had grown a spirit; she was just too smart.
It was like this cat could see right through him. Almost everyone thought he was devoted to Yu Xin, in love with her to the depths; only this cat named Dingding had seen the ill intent lurking beneath his gentle, affectionate exterior.
Every time he faced this cat, Fang Zeyang’s heart would start pounding. That was also why he finally couldn’t hold back and dumped the cat.
Watching Yu Xin carry the cat into the bathroom to give her a bath, a flash of coldness passed through Fang Zeyang’s eyes.
Next time, he ought to take this damned cat out and just kill her outright.
