The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master

Chapter 229: Surreptitiously

Chapter 229: Surreptitiously

Grandma Dixon was afraid of being too direct and hurting Vera Xavier’s pride, so she spoke tactfully.

Vera Xavier had already been told she was skinny by two people today, though she had vehemently disagreed with the other person who’d said it.

She glanced down at her body but couldn’t see where she was supposedly so skinny. She just had a standard, slender figure.

A warmth spread through Vera Xavier’s heart. She chuckled and said, "Thank you, Grandma Dixon. If I’m ever truly starving, I’ll definitely come find you."

Grandma Dixon smiled and nodded. She knew Vera Xavier wouldn’t go hungry when Zachary Preston was home, but when he wasn’t, all bets were off. After all, that was just how Rona Langdon was.

Grandma Dixon had heard what was going on with Cara Preston next door, so she asked, "What exactly happened with Cara?"

Vera Xavier said softly, "I’m not entirely sure myself, but I’m confident that since my mom went, she’ll definitely be able to bring her back."

The two exchanged a knowing look.

Grandma Dixon sighed. "I used to think Cara was such a sensible girl, but lately, she’s really..."

She stopped, feeling she had said too much. With a smile, she headed back home.

Vera Xavier knew that between what happened this morning and the news of Cara Preston being held at the police station, speculation would run wild. After an ordeal like this, Cara’s reputation within the compound would be all but destroyed.

Vera Xavier calmly returned to her room. The moment she opened the door, she found Nathaniel Nathan—who had arrived at some point without her knowing—was inside. She instinctively hurried to close the door.

Nathaniel Nathan’s face was cold. "Can I not be seen in public?" he demanded. "Do you have to be so sneaky about it?"

Vera Xavier cleared her throat, at a loss for words. ’He’s the one who sneaks in here every single time, isn’t he? And if he’s sneaking in, doesn’t that mean he can’t be seen? What’s he getting so aggressive for!’

Nathaniel Nathan asked her, "Will two days be enough for Cara Preston?"

Vera Xavier knew he could pull some strings to keep Cara Preston locked up for much longer. But for Cara, there was no fundamental difference between being detained for two days or fifteen. As long as she spent one night in there, the matter would be settled.

So she said in a serious tone, "My mom has gone to get Cara Preston out. Knowing her personality, she’ll cause a huge scene at the police station first. Then, when she realizes she can’t get anything done, she’ll call my dad and pressure him to pull some strings to get Cara out. That would put my dad in a really difficult position. So, one night is enough. Cara Preston can be released tomorrow morning."

Nathaniel Nathan looked at her, a little surprised. Bathed in the lamplight, she looked elegant and composed, her eyes filled with wisdom. It only took a moment for someone with his intellect to grasp the implications of her plan.

As long as Cara Preston spent one night in a police station cell, rumors would fly about her and Jack Judd, regardless of whether anything actually happened. After that, it would be nearly impossible for her to marry a decent man in Crestfall.

He said in a flat tone, "As long as you’re happy. It makes no difference to me."

Vera sensed that Lord Nathan was in a bad mood today and decided she should try to please him a little. "Actually," she said, "the reason I’m dealing with Cara Preston isn’t because of what she did to me before. It’s because I can’t stand the way she has her sights set on you."

The light in Nathaniel Nathan’s eyes instantly brightened. "So, you’re jealous?"

Vera Xavier paused for a moment. She thought it over carefully. Her feelings hadn’t quite escalated to the level of jealousy, but she truly detested the way Cara Preston was always scheming to get Nathaniel Nathan. She cleared her throat and said, "You could say that."
