Chapter 763: Profiteer
Chapter 763: Profiteer
Summer Monroe’s subordinates, including Cece and Bella, also lived in this town.
The village was so small that strangers easily attracted attention.
Every time Summer’s subordinates went to the village, they would disguise themselves as peddlers buying and selling goods in town to hide their identities.
As soon as they met, Bella started chattering away.
"Boss, you don’t know, that village is full of potholes, with houses collapsing from time to time. Many villagers are afraid to live inside their homes and have set up tents outside. With their way of developing, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed!"
Summer’s subordinate, Rube, shook his head and corrected, "It’s not a matter of time before someone gets killed; someone already has. I found out that a family had their old mother and daughter crushed to death because their house collapsed. They approached Old Madam Stanton for an explanation, and she just excused it as a natural disaster, not her fault. She just paid for a funeral and called it done."
Bella widened her eyes and spat out, "Crooked merchants!"
Summer looked at Rube and asked, "What reaction did people have when I asked you to spread the news of the old lady’s death?"
Rube quickly replied, "Originally, I only got thirty percent of the villagers’ signatures. After spreading the news of her death, the number of signatures increased to sixty percent."
Summer shook her head, "Still not enough. We need to get at least eighty percent of the villagers to sign."
"So what should we do now? Should I disguise myself as a peddler again to persuade them?"
"No need," Summer squinted slightly and said, "Henry Stanton didn’t properly handle the old lady’s funeral in Crestfall. From what I know of him, to earn a reputation as a filial son and with some guilt towards the old lady, he will definitely hold a grand funeral when he returns. At that time, you can add fuel to the fire."
"Yes, I understand."
"Also, tomorrow I’ll go to the village with you. You help me bring Dottie over. I need Dottie’s help with something."
"Yes!"
In the deep of night, Summer had trouble sleeping. When she got up, she saw Damian Knight sitting on a small stool at the hotel entrance, smoking.
She walked over, and Damian turned his head to see her, immediately extinguishing his cigarette.
He waved the smoke away with his hand and gently asked, "What’s wrong? Can’t sleep?"
Summer sat down next to Damian and sighed, "I’m not sure if I truly understand Henry Stanton. I’m afraid he won’t hold a grand funeral..."
"If he doesn’t do it, don’t you still have Dottie? Isn’t Dottie your backup plan?"
Summer chuckled softly and said, "Nothing gets past you. But I still prefer not to involve Dottie because my plan might harm his health."
"Ask Dottie tomorrow if he’s willing. If not, we’ll find another way. We’ll solve it somehow."
"Okay." Summer nodded and started chatting idly with Damian.
After talking for a while, they both started feeling sleepy.
Summer rubbed her eyes and said, "I’ll go back to sleep first. You should get some rest too."
"Alright."
Damian responded, watching Summer return to the hotel. Then he opened his tablet and began dealing with business matters.
The Knight Group’s businesses spanned various industries, and he was quite the perfectionist, preferring to handle many things personally.
It wasn’t until the sky began to lighten that Damian finished the company’s business and went back to sleep.
In the blink of an eye, it was the next day.
Rube, according to the plan, disguised himself as a peddler again to sell goods in the village.
When passing by Dottie’s house, Dottie had just returned from collecting coal.
Upon seeing Rube, his soot-covered face broke into a grin.
"Uncle Rubin!"
