Chapter 338: Chapter 339: Schadenfreude
The two of them entered one after the other. In the dining room, Grandmother was eating, and Pauline Briggs was there too. As soon as Pauline saw Sienna Johnson, her face darkened.
Grandmother was eating bird’s nest porridge. When she saw Sienna enter, she casually glanced at her. Seeing that Sienna’s complexion was good, she felt relieved.
Grandmother smiled kindly and waved at her. "Sienna, come, come, join me for some food. The bird’s nest porridge the kitchen made today is very delicious; have some to nourish your body."
"Alright."
Sienna sat down beside Grandmother. A servant immediately brought Sienna a bowl of bird’s nest porridge. Sienna took a sip. The porridge was very well-made and delicious. She drank it in small sips. After she had finished half a bowl, Pauline couldn’t hold back anymore.
"Eat, eat, eat! You still have the mood to eat!"
Sienna ignored her and continued to drink her porridge. Seeing that the shrimp dumplings on the table looked delicious, she ate two of them as well.
Pauline, who was being ignored, exploded, "Mother, look at her, she’s completely oblivious! She has become the laughingstock of the entire Sileria City, yet she still has the mood to eat here! This child, always thinking that I want to harm her, refused to listen to anything I said and was bent on marrying Adrian Desmond! As a result... she didn’t listen to the advice of elders and is now suffering the consequences right before her eyes..."
"Pauline, if there’s something to discuss, let Sienna finish eating first," Grandmother said. She had experienced great storms and hardship and was someone who could maintain her composure even if a mountain collapsed right in front of her.
"Mother, I’m really worried."
"What are you worried about? Stop meddling and eat," Grandmother said.
Pauline glared fiercely at Sienna. Seeing Sienna’s seemingly nonchalant demeanor, Pauline was so furious she wanted to slap her a few times.
After finishing their meal and rinsing their mouths, they finally began to discuss the important matter.
"Sienna, what’s going on with that Melanie Carpenter at your wedding yesterday?"
"Oh, she’s Adrian’s ex-wife. They’re already divorced."
Grandmother furrowed her brows. "You didn’t tell me he had a wife."
Sienna smiled. "They’re already divorced."
Grandmother was clearly dissatisfied with this. "If I had known he was divorced, I would never have agreed to this marriage. How can a daughter of our Johnson Family marry a divorced man?"
Sienna smiled. "No one is perfect."
"There’s no perfect person, but it’s not difficult to find a man who hasn’t been divorced, is it? The men I introduced to you were all talented young men. Look at the man you chose! His ex-wife even ran to your wedding and attempted suicide... I was almost frightened to death," Pauline said, still shaken.
"Adrian will handle it."
"How will he handle it? Can he make his ex-wife disappear?"
Pauline had brought Melanie to Sienna and Adrian’s wedding yesterday because she didn’t want them to get married. Unexpectedly, that Melanie was so ruthless, stabbing herself to win back the man. Pauline didn’t know what had happened to her now.
"Adrian promised me he wouldn’t let her stay in Sileria City."
Grandmother’s brows furrowed deeply, and she sighed. "You’re grown up now, and I shouldn’t interfere too much in your private life. However, what happened at the wedding has indeed damaged our Johnson Family’s reputation. You should ask Adrian to publish a notice in the newspaper stating that he has no relationship with that Melanie."
"That’s to clear his name," Sienna said. "But so many people saw it yesterday. Even if a notice is published, it won’t completely clear things up. After all, even if there was animosity, no one would attempt suicide at a wedding... Such a drastic act could only be due to emotional reasons."
"Can’t you just divorce him?" Pauline pressed, her sole intention being to break up Sienna and Adrian.
"Grandmother, I will handle everything. You just need to rest and recover, and don’t worry about anything."
"How can I not worry? Sienna, you’re still young and don’t understand how terrifying a woman blinded by love can be. Since that woman can be so ruthless to herself, I’m afraid she’ll be ruthless to you. Even if you’re careful, you can’t guard against other people’s schemes. How can I not worry?" Grandmother said.
"I will be careful."
Pauline had initially just felt it was unfair for her daughter to marry a divorced man, but after hearing Grandmother’s words, she realized there was danger and couldn’t help but worry. "Mother, what do you mean? Will that Melanie try to harm Sienna?"
"Pauline, don’t overthink it. I’m just making an assumption."
"Mother, you must think of a solution! You don’t know how terrifying that woman is. She had the courage to stab herself with such a long knife. I still feel scared when I think about it," Pauline pleaded with her mother-in-law. "Will that woman hold a grudge and take action against Sienna?"
Grandmother said, "You should hire a few bodyguards as well."
Sienna burst into laughter. "Perhaps no one was planning to kidnap me. But once they see my bodyguards, they’ll know I’m rich and will probably get ideas. Forget it, I’ll keep a low profile."
Grandmother poked her forehead. "You child, I’m talking to you seriously, and you still have the audacity to joke with me."
"Grandmother, I’m not a child anymore. Trust me, I will handle it."
Sienna was stubborn. Once she made a decision, not even ten oxen could pull her back. Grandmother knew she couldn’t persuade her, so she reminded her, "Sienna, our family is vulnerable—just us, with Curly still so young. We all depend on you. You must take better care of yourself in your daily life."
"Don’t worry, Grandmother. I will be careful."
"Hire a few bodyguards for yourself!" Grandmother insisted. Sienna didn’t want to go against her grandmother’s wishes. She figured having a few more people around would be useful for running errands, so she agreed.
「The Stewart Residence.」
Sabrina Johnson was reading the entertainment newspaper’s report about Sienna and laughed so hard she doubled over. "Frederick, look at Sienna... After all that careful picking and choosing, she ended up with a second-hand man. Did she become a stepmother the moment she got married? Haha..."
Sienna’s misfortune delighted Sabrina. Reading about the incident at Sienna’s wedding, Sabrina truly regretted not attending to witness Sienna’s miserable state in person.
Frederick Stewart looked displeased. He actually had feelings for Sienna and never thought she would move so quickly and marry Adrian directly.
"That’s enough! She’s your sister, how can you take such pleasure in her misfortune!" Frederick scolded.
Sabrina slapped the newspaper on the dressing table, glaring angrily at the man sitting on the bed. "Frederick, what’s wrong? Is your heart aching? Too bad your heartache is useless. Sienna looks down on you."
Frederick threw off the blanket, got out of bed, and said irritably, "I’ve had enough of you. You’re acting crazy first thing in the morning."
"I’m acting crazy? How am I acting crazy? Frederick, you better explain yourself!"
"I have nothing to say to you!" How could he have been so blind, he thought, to marry such a foolish woman?
