Chapter 736: The Song
Chapter 736: The Song
The early morning sun filled the spacious bedroom.
After returning from the Four Seasons, Matthew and Taylor had spent nearly the entire night entwined, sleeping no more than three hours before she woke him for another round.
According to her, every minute was precious. After all, inspiration could strike at any moment.
But after a night like that, she realized her thoughts had been far too preoccupied with pleasure.
This time, she gave that aspect her full attention.
And strangely enough, inspiration soon struck.
"Wait!" Taylor stopped him.
She then scrambled impatiently over to the sofa, snatched a pen and paper, and began to write.
Matthew propped himself up and watched. He didn't make a sound, not wanting to interrupt her.
In truth, what had happened yesterday had significantly changed his impression of Taylor.Even if Harvey Weinstein's influence didn't fully extend to the pop music world, very few people would have dared to stand up and confront such a powerful figure in the entertainment industry.
In that respect, Taylor had handled herself far better than Anne Hathaway did on Oscar night.
Initially, Taylor had said she wanted to make him her boyfriend, but Matthew had never taken it seriously. He knew perfectly well that she'd gotten involved with him for other reasons.
That's why every time inspiration struck, he never interfered—even when she implicitly wove their intimate moments into her songs, he didn't object.
In those songs, Taylor described her affection for her lover from the innocent perspective of a young girl, free of any scorn or bitterness.
The minutes ticked by, and after more than half an hour, Taylor suddenly tossed her pen aside, stood up, and exclaimed, "Ah, that feels so good!"
Only then did Matthew walk over, draping a blanket over her shoulders as he asked:
"Finished writing?"
"Not quite," Taylor said, stretching. "I can fix and polish it a little later."
Matthew glanced at the manuscript on the table and asked, "Can I see?"
Taylor picked it up and handed it to him. "Of course."
Matthew scanned the page. He couldn't make sense of something as specialized as a musical score, of course, so he focused on the lyrics. After reading just a few lines, he felt a faint flush of embarrassment.
"What's this song?" Matthew asked.
Taylor didn't hesitate for a second. "I just came up with it," she answered plainly. "It's called 'Matthew's Song.' I wrote it just for you."
The corner of Matthew's mouth twitched. "Are you sure you can actually sing this?"
Taylor wasn't stupid; she caught his meaning immediately. She leaned close to his ear and murmured, "I swear, I'll only ever sing this song for you."
With that, she covered her mouth and stifled a giggle.
Matthew didn't dwell on it. He sat down on the sofa and requested, "Sing it for me?"
He sounded genuinely touched. "This is the first time anyone's ever written a song for me."
Hearing that, Taylor's playful expression vanished, replaced by a serious nod. "I can. Do you have a guitar?"
Matthew shook his head. "No, but I'll have someone buy a few and put them in the room later."
Taylor looked delighted, nodding enthusiastically. She cleared her throat. "I'll sing it a cappella."
Taking the manuscript from Matthew, she hummed softly to check the pitch, murmured to herself for a moment, then stood up straight and began to sing the unique lyrics.
And so, from Taylor's lips, came "Matthew's Song."
"Lightning in the dead of night, that is my beloved Matthew's sword. Between this hallowed body and soul, it pierces through me—hot, searing, blazing, and extraordinary..."
Matthew scratched his head. Could lyrics possibly be any more obvious?
He glanced at Taylor, who wasn't the least bit embarrassed and sang with all the sincerity of a live performance.
"Forging onward, unstoppable, striking the strings of my heart. Sighs of spirit and desire, where sea and wind clash in a fierce battle. Pressing ever forward, a serpent's spirit coils around the soul, bodies becoming one. Matthew's long sword leaves me breathless..."
Hearing this, Matthew was left speechless.
The melody was beautiful, but those lyrics...
Perhaps if he thought about it philosophically, he could find some deeper meaning? At least, he hoped there was one.
But he had to admit, Taylor's voice was lovely—melodious and incredibly moving.
"A roar and a cry, a thrill and a shout, the sword is unsheathed and points toward the clouds. Oh, the beautiful moonlight... It's Matthew's Excalibur! Yeah, oh yeah, you and I are climbing the peak again! In a flash of lightning... It gleams, oh-oh-oh, that long, long sword~"
"Yeah~Oh~Yeah~~"
At last, Taylor's voice faded, and her expectant gaze fell on Matthew. "So? What did you think?"
What could Matthew say? He could only give her a thumbs-up. "It's very... original! Truly one of a kind."
With that, he couldn't hold it in any longer and burst out laughing. Taylor joined in, her own laughter bright and happy.
The song had stirred something in them, and soon enough, they were bringing its lyrics to life all over again.
It wasn't until midday that Matthew and Taylor finally came downstairs for breakfast. After they ate, they decided to take a walk around the estate.
As they strolled through the tree-lined gardens, their conversation eventually turned to Taylor's career.
"That suggestion you gave me last time? I told my agent and the record label about it." Taylor took Matthew's hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. "They all think it's a great idea, and they're ready to start putting it into action."
"Glad I could help," Matthew replied.
Taylor pouted slightly, murmuring, "Aren't you even curious?"
Matthew gave her cheek a gentle pinch. "I was waiting for you to tell me yourself."
"My manager has already been in touch with Katy Perry's manager. She's a new pop singer who's getting really popular right now."
She glanced at Matthew and added, "Her real name is Katheryn Hudson. She used to be a backup dancer and singer for Britney Spears."
"Katheryn Hudson?" The name jogged Matthew's memory. "I think I met her once."
Taylor immediately asked, "Are you still in touch with Britney?"
"You don't have to worry about that," Matthew said with a dismissive shake of his head. "We don't talk anymore."
Taylor didn't seem too concerned. She continued, "Anyway, after our managers talked, we agreed to become rivals in the future. Once we're both more famous, we'll start showing animosity at public events and award shows, then we'll mock each other on social media and take subtle digs at each other in our songs."
Matthew nodded a warning. "Just make sure you keep it under control."
"I know," Taylor said. "I've met Katy Perry a few times, and I don't really like her anyway."
Hearing that, Matthew had a feeling this little act could easily become real one day—the fake rivalry turning into a genuine one.
Of course, there was nothing wrong with that. Two major stars constantly and openly challenging each other was just as appealing to the public as two major stars falling in love.
Taylor went on, "Then there's the 'best friend squad' idea. My manager and I are working on that too, but I'm busy with the tour right now, so I don't have time for it yet."
Matthew considered this, then replied, "There's no rush. It's a long-term plan."
Taylor nodded. "I already have a few good friends in the circle: Selena Gomez from 'Wizards of Waverly Place,' and Miley Cyrus, who you've met. There's also an up-and-coming model who I think could be a future supermodel."
She looked particularly confident. "With my social skills, I'm sure I'll have even more friends in the future."
Matthew encouraged her, "I have no doubt."
They walked deeper into the gardens, and Taylor suddenly dragged her fingernails across his palm. "Matthew, let's go back. I don't want to waste any more time walking."
Matthew was about to agree—the word was on the tip of his tongue—but he swallowed it back. He gestured around them. "Taylor, I think this is a pretty good spot. Why don't we try it right here?"
"Mmm..." Taylor hesitated for only a second before nodding eagerly. "Okay! Let's do it here!"
After the charity reception, Matthew and Taylor remained secluded at the Horner Estate. On Monday morning, however, Taylor had to leave Los Angeles for her world tour, and Matthew personally drove her to the airport.
Soon after Taylor's departure, it was back to work for Matthew as well. He returned to Nolan's set to continue filming "Inception."
