Chapter 705
Chapter 705
After landing in Nairobi, Matthew and his bodyguards went straight to the UN’s African headquarters to meet with the UNHCR team. For this trip to Africa, he had brought six bodyguards, including Brown Williams, each of them the best of the best.
In Los Angeles, where his daily life was relatively secure, his security detail was typically down to two men. But visiting a volatile continent like Africa, he had to take his safety seriously.
However, Kenya, much like Morocco, was relatively stable both socially and in terms of security—one of the few such regions in Africa.
Nairobi was not only the capital of Kenya but also home to the UN’s African headquarters. The African branches of organizations like UNEP, UNHCR, and the Fund for Women and Children were all based there.
Upon arriving at the UN’s African headquarters, Matthew was greeted by a UNHCR staff member. He first met with Guterres and was then checked into a nearby hotel.
The destination for this mission was the Dadaab refugee camp on the border of Kenya and Somalia, a place he had visited once before.
The situation in the camp was currently dire, so the UN had specifically organized this mission to get people on the ground—not just from the UNHCR, but from the Fund for Women and Children as well.
In addition, a large contingent of journalists was present.
Even from the UN's perspective, a mission like this needed proper media coverage to draw more attention from the international community.
A crowd of people followed the UNHCR staff into the hotel lobby. Matthew took a closer look and saw that many had press passes hanging from their necks. They were all journalists covering current events, with many representing major media outlets and news agencies like AFP, the BBC, and CNN.Before heading into the hotel, Matthew had spoken briefly with Guterres and learned that this was a major, meticulously organized UN operation.
Over the past two years, the situation in the Middle East and Africa had grown increasingly unstable, and the refugee crisis had become ever more pressing.
The powers behind the scenes were the ones actually creating these problems, all while shouting hollow slogans and pushing the UN to engage in superficial work. They exploited the refugee crisis, turning human suffering into a business, and had done so time and again.
Although Matthew wasn't particularly well-versed in politics, he understood that the refugee crisis was an extremely complex problem, one the UN couldn't solve on its own.
As Matthew walked through the hotel lobby, he drew the attention of many reporters, instantly becoming the center of focus. A few of them even approached to greet him personally.
"Alex, who is that man?"
In a corner of the hotel lobby, a middle-aged man with short black hair asked the young man standing across from him, who appeared to be in his late twenties. "He seems quite famous."
The young man, Alex, smiled. "Jack, my friend, you’ve been buried in social issues for the past few years. If you followed entertainment news even a little, you’d know exactly who he is."
Jack asked curiously, "Entertainment news? What kind?"
Alex gestured toward Matthew. "A Hollywood movie star."
"A movie star? Hah, isn't he just an actor?"
"You're being too dismissive," Alex said, shaking his head.
Although they were both media professionals, the age gap between them resulted in vastly different perspectives.
Alex paused to think for a moment. "A movie star at Matthew Horner's level has been more than just an actor for a long time." He briefly summarized what he knew. "His name is Matthew Horner, and he's the biggest star in Hollywood. His influence extends far beyond the entertainment world. You know the Forbes Celebrity 100 list, right? Horner is a permanent fixture on it—he’s been in the top five for the last three or four years and has even held the number one spot."
Jack tilted his head, his gaze drifting toward Matthew. "That list isn't particularly influential," he commented.
"There's more to it than that." Alex sighed. "Being a movie star is just one of his roles. Matthew Horner is also a well-known philanthropist and social activist..."
"Social activist?" Jack was clearly unconvinced.
"He supports the feminist movement and advocates for children's rights." Alex had previously worked for an entertainment magazine before switching to current events, so he knew a great deal about Hollywood. "And he doesn't just shout slogans. He invests enormous amounts of money to back these causes and actively participates in events around the globe."
He gestured around the lobby. "Why are we here? To follow the UN team and report on the refugee camp, right? Well, Matthew Horner is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador now!"
The older journalist still seemed unimpressed. To him, titles like 'philanthropist,' 'social activist,' and 'goodwill ambassador' were just noise.
"And most importantly," Alex said slowly, "according to Forbes, Matthew Horner's net worth is over five hundred million dollars. And that's a conservative estimate."
"How much?" Jack quickly adjusted his glasses. "How much did you say?"
Alex held up one hand, fingers spread. "Five hundred million dollars!"
Jack was instantly speechless. His eyes drifted back toward the reception desk, his gaze landing on Matthew. This man was, indeed, no ordinary movie star.

An assistant handed Matthew a copy of the schedule, then politely excused himself and left.
A few more reporters approached, and Matthew spoke with each of them in turn. These journalists were set to follow the UN team as a group, a key factor that had convinced him to make the trip to Africa himself.
Journalists covering social issues were more reserved than their entertainment counterparts; it was unlikely they would mob him or block his way. Besides, they would all be heading to the refugee camp together, so there would be ample opportunity for interviews later.
Accompanied by a few of his bodyguards, Matthew took the elevator to his floor. Once inside his room, he switched on the phone he’d turned off before the flight.
He checked his inbox, but aside from a message from Helen, there was nothing new.
Helen reminded him that the crew of "Inception" had altered their schedule and would be remaining in London for a while longer. Consequently, after his trip to Africa, he was to fly directly to London to meet them, instead of going to Paris as they had originally planned.
After sending a reply, Matthew headed straight for the shower.
He had just finished changing into fresh clothes when there was a sudden knock at the door.
Matthew was puzzled. Who could be visiting at this hour? He had already received his schedule, and all necessary briefings were complete.
He walked to the door and looked through the peephole. Standing outside was a young, brown-eyed woman, a faint smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
Emma Watson?
Matthew immediately opened the door.
Emma Watson, dressed in a T-shirt and shorts, gave a little playful sway and asked, "Surprised to see me?"
"What are you doing here, Emma?" Matthew asked, curious.
He quickly stepped aside, gesturing for her to enter. "Come in."
As Emma Watson stepped into the suite, Matthew gave a subtle wave toward the room across the hall, signaling that everything was fine.
When he'd answered the door, he had noticed the door to the opposite room was slightly ajar, with Brown Williams positioned just inside.
Matthew closed the door and led Emma Watson into the suite’s living room, pushing aside the luggage he hadn’t had a chance to unpack yet. "Make yourself at home, Emma," he said.
Emma settled onto the lone sofa, the corner of her mouth twitching into a smirk. "You didn't answer my question," she pointed out.
Matthew sat down beside her. "Of course I am. I can't even tell you how happy I am to see you here." Then he asked, "So, what brings you to Kenya?"
"Have you forgotten?" Emma Watson reminded him. "I'm an ambassador for the Fund for Women and Children."
She paused for a moment, then added, "I knew you were coming even before I left. I deliberately didn't get in touch because I wanted to surprise you. I even had someone keeping an eye out for you in the lobby."
They chatted in the suite for a while longer, and as evening approached, Matthew invited Emma to join him for dinner.
Unfortunately, Emma had to attend a few events for the Fund; otherwise, they might have explored Nairobi together.
Still, they would be traveling to the refugee camps together the following day.
