Chapter 701
Chapter 701
"My girlfriend?" The crew member's words only deepened Matthew's confusion.
"What girlfriend?"
His girlfriend came to visit the set? Since when did he have a girlfriend?
Matthew mulled over the question as he walked toward the studio entrance. So far, only two people could even possibly be called his girlfriend.
One was Britney, but they had broken up long ago. Although they occasionally kept in touch, there was no chance of them getting back together.
The other was Charlize Theron. The two had been engaged as a publicity stunt...
"Could it be her?"
The thought crossed his mind for a moment before he dismissed it. Charlize Theron had made it clear long ago that they were just friends, and they hadn't had any special contact since.
When he arrived at the entrance, Matthew saw that it wasn't Charlize Theron.
Tall and slender, her platinum blonde hair and pink outfit made her look like a Barbie doll. Of course, Matthew recognized her—it was Taylor Swift!Standing behind Taylor Swift was another young woman holding two handbags, who appeared to be her assistant.
"Hi, Matthew."
Taylor Swift walked over, reached out, and looped her arm through his. "I'm not interrupting your work, am I?" she asked with a bright smile.
Matthew looked down at her and asked, "Since when are you my girlfriend?"
Taylor Swift answered earnestly, "Didn't we talk about this the other day? You're my inspiration." She tightened her grip on Matthew's arm. "And to get more inspired, I need you."
Seeing the change in Matthew's expression, she quickly switched topics. "Are you done for the day?"
Matthew nodded cautiously. "I just finished shooting my scenes for today."
Taylor Swift tugged on his arm. "Then let's go."
As they walked out of the studio, Matthew said, "Don't go around telling people I'm your boyfriend."
"I get it." Taylor Swift seemed worried he was angry. "I won't tell anyone."
They reached the entrance of Warner Studios. Taylor Swift got into Matthew's car and said to the assistant who had followed them, "Give me my things. You can head back first. If my agent asks, just tell her I'm busy. I'll call her tomorrow."
The assistant didn't say a word, simply got into her own car and left Warner Studios first.
Matthew waited for Taylor Swift to settle into the passenger seat with her handbag, then asked, "Where to?"
"Your place," Taylor replied sweetly. She pulled a small, neatly wrapped box from her handbag. "Are you hungry? Want a snack?"
Her actions made Matthew's head spin slightly. 'Why do I feel like something is off here?'
Taylor opened the box, revealing a mousse cake inside. She held it out to him. "Try it."
Matthew took it and asked suspiciously, "You're not planning on drugging me, are you?"
"Hey, what are you thinking?" Taylor Swift muttered, annoyed. "I made this myself..."
"Really?" Matthew cautiously took a bite and nodded.
Taylor's eyes widened. "Is it good?"
Matthew took another bite and savored it. "It's a little sweet for my taste."
"Oh..." Taylor nodded. "I see. I'll use less sugar next time."
Hearing that, Matthew was a little surprised. He pointed at the mousse cake in his hand. "You really made this?"
A look of irritation crossed Taylor Swift's face again. "You don't believe me?" She huffed twice and added, "I made it just for you. I've been busy baking since noon."
"My bad." Matthew popped the rest of the cake into his mouth and finished it in one go, then said, "Thank you."
Taylor Swift smiled happily. "If you like it, I'll make it for you again when I have time."
Matthew didn't reply. The car left Burbank and merged onto the highway toward Los Angeles. A billboard stood there, as prominent as the Hollywood sign, featuring an image of him and Paul Walker.
It was a gigantic poster advertising "Fast & Furious 4."
It was now mid-March, and as the film's release date approached, the promotional efforts from Skydance Pictures and Disney Pictures were ramping up.
Taylor Swift noticed the billboard too. "I'll tell my fans to go see it," she said.
Matthew smiled, gently patting Taylor's hand. "Then I'll have to pay you back. What should I do?"
The meaning of his question was clear: he accepted her kindness but didn't want to be indebted to her and was looking for a way to return the favor.
Taylor was a smart girl and of course understood what he meant. She pointed to her handbag and said, "You already ate the cake I baked."
Matthew picked up the other box she was holding, opened it, and found a small slice of sponge cake, which, like the last one, was a bit too sweet for him.
"Do you like it?" Taylor Swift blinked, watching Matthew eat the cake. "I'll make that for you next time, too."
"Do you have a lot of free time?" Matthew asked.
"Not really, I'm very busy. But I'm even busier making time for you." She grabbed Matthew's arm. "I specifically postponed an event today just to be with you."
Hearing this, Matthew felt a sense of unease and asked uncertainly, "Taylor, you're not serious, are you?"
Taylor looked at him with wide eyes. "I take relationships very seriously!"
Matthew felt there were some things that were better clarified upfront. After a moment's thought, he said slowly, "I'm not planning on having a girlfriend right now, and I probably won't for a long time."
Taylor didn't seem to care. "Don't worry. I'm the one pursuing you, not the other way around."
She was very relaxed about it. "You don't need to feel pressured. You're just giving me creative inspiration!"
Matthew was at a loss for words. How could he refuse when a girl like this threw herself at him?
Besides, wouldn't turning Taylor Swift down be disrespectful? It might even break her heart and cause her to never find creative inspiration again.
By his standards, it was a fair trade.
Back at Horner Manor, Matthew didn't even bother with dinner, pulling Taylor Swift straight into the master bedroom on the second floor. This time, Taylor was once again inspired. And although she didn't write an entire song in half an hour, she did finish one that had been missing a few parts.
Matthew had a feeling that Taylor Swift really did see him as a source of inspiration.
But it didn't seem to be a completely conventional use of the term.
For a singer-songwriter, creative inspiration was just too important.
If he were a male singer and found a woman who could inspire him, he would probably make the same choice as Taylor Swift, right?
"I already have four songs for my new album." Taylor Swift sat by the bedroom's glass window, gazing at the brightly lit Los Angeles in the distance. "Unfortunately, I have to leave early tomorrow morning."
She squeezed Matthew's hand tightly. "If I could stay with you longer, I'd have all the songs for the album ready."
Matthew smiled. "You're amazing. You've changed my perspective on songwriters."
"What perspective? The one from a guy who was born with no musical talent and can't be taught a thing," Taylor Swift mumbled, then added, "I think if we could be together, I could definitely become a better singer."
"Like Shania Twain?" Matthew asked.
Although he didn't know much about music, he recognized the name of the recent queen of country pop.
"Better," Taylor Swift replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Matthew, however, didn't take it as a joke. He could tell this girl had huge ambitions. In many ways, her personality and methods were more or less similar to his own.
For example, everything she did was ultimately in service of her career.
Take this pursuit, for instance. To say that Taylor Swift fell in love with him at first sight... even Anne Hathaway wouldn't believe that.
After all, with him, Taylor Swift gained access to so many things. Taking the next step in her career would be a piece of cake.
"I don't know much about the music scene." Matthew stopped thinking about it; he wasn't going to be Taylor Swift's boyfriend anyway. "Taylor, it's not that easy to surpass Shania. I'm afraid you'd have to change your style, right?"
