Chapter 511
Chapter 511
The African sun was blistering. Some of the shirtless Black men looked particularly gaunt, their ribs starkly defined—a clear sign of chronic malnutrition.
A tall man stood among them, handing out water and food from a makeshift tent. His expression turned grave, etched with distress.
The scene then shifted, showing the same tall man carrying a young Black boy. He approached a group of children and crouched down to entertain them, unbothered by the dirt and animal droppings on the ground.
The footage cut again, this time to the man inside a massive, circular conference hall, his voice ringing out as he called for global attention to the refugee crisis in Africa.
The video played on a large screen bearing the UNHCR logo. Anyone with a bit of awareness would immediately recognize it as an officially sanctioned video from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
A hush fell over the live studio audience. The Black members, Gilbert included, were now staring at Spike Lee with undisguised contempt.
Could anyone truly believe that a star who would travel to war-torn Africa, interact so closely with Black refugees and children, and advocate for them on an international stage, was a man who discriminated against Black people?
Maria snorted. "Scum like Spike Lee deserves to be publicly shamed."
In the center of his mansion, Will Smith's face was grim. He was beginning to realize that Spike Lee was in serious trouble.
"What does any of this mean? What does it prove?" Jada's dismissive voice cut through the air. "Black Africans aren't like us.""Jada!" Will instantly cut her off. "Don't say things like that out loud!"
"..." Jada fell silent, though her expression showed she hadn't changed her mind.

On the set of the live show, the same thought crossed Spike Lee's mind: could Black Africans really be the same as Black Americans?
He opened his mouth to speak, but he swallowed the words before they could escape his lips.
Deep down, however, there was a conviction that would never waver...
It wasn't just his idea, but the shared belief of an entire group.
Matthew remained silent as the video continued to play.
Truck after truck arrived at a camp where countless Black refugees were receiving desperately needed supplies, all under the watch of blue-helmeted peacekeepers. The markings of the UNHCR and the Matthew Horner Refugee Fund were clearly visible.
In just thirty seconds, the video showcased several African refugee camps receiving aid from the Horner Foundation.
Among those receiving the much-needed supplies were women, children, the elderly, and the disabled—all of them, without exception, were Black.
Watching the video on the big screen, Gilbert was so incensed by Lee that his hand once again reached into his bag, his fingers brushing against the eggs.
A wave of murmurs swept through the studio, filled with curses aimed at Spike Lee.
Gilbert rolled an egg in his palm, his eyes fixed on Lee as if a fire had been lit within them.
The Black refugees didn't speak, but the joy on their faces was impossible to miss.
The video, still marked with the UNHCR logo, was a testament to its authenticity.
A local Black African leader, speaking in halting English, expressed his gratitude to the UN, Matthew Horner, and his charitable foundation.
Next, a UN peacekeeping officer spoke highly of Matthew's assistance...

In a mansion in Beverly Hills, Sid Ganis, the current acting president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, was also watching the talk show live.
The television screen once again focused on a close-up of Spike Lee.
He shook his head and said to his son beside him, "Write a few words about how disgusted I am by Spike's false accusations."
The middle-aged man nodded in reply. "Alright."
Although his father was only an acting president with limited official power, he still held sway over many people.
He understood perfectly that after his father's statement and today's talk show, Spike Lee and his film were practically out of the Oscar race.
Sid Ganis stared at the television screen. "These Black people... they just can't seem to understand their place."
In recent years, the Academy had made a few concessions, and now they truly believed they were the most powerful group in Hollywood.
He knew a lot about Spike Lee, who positioned himself as a leader of the Black political movement in Hollywood.
In reality, he was just a scoundrel who thrived on stoking racial tensions.
If it weren't for his reputation and the influence of public opinion, would they, a group of conservative middle-aged and elderly men, have tolerated his constant rhetoric all these years?
He was the kind of man who spouted fictions without facts, who pontificated about youngsters like Matthew Horner and legends like Eastwood...
Doesn't he know that attacking Eastwood is foolish? Sid understood that a group of people like Spike had been spoiled over the years.
But the social climate now...
Sid shook his head. Ultimately, he was only an acting president and would be stepping down next year. He was in no position to change the entire situation.

On stage, Spike's face remained grim, his expression unreadable.
Oprah said little; there was no need. The audience's judgment was far more effective.
Everything Matthew had said and done before was merely setting the stage for this moment.
The video continued on the large screen. After the refugees, local Black officials, and peacekeeping officers, officials from the UNHCR appeared. The man on screen was Guterres, the High Commissioner for the UNHCR.
In the video, the high-ranking UNHCR official, a key figure on African and refugee issues, praised Matthew's charitable gesture of aiding African refugees. He also paraphrased the words of the outgoing UN Secretary-General, who had said that Matthew possessed a great humanitarian spirit and had genuinely helped the refugees in Africa.
Oprah now looked at Matthew in a different light. While the UN was largely an instrument controlled by its five permanent members, its reputation and appeal were undeniable. No one could ignore the words of two of its high-ranking officials.
What more could Spike Lee do in this situation?
When it came time to pick a side, Oprah never hesitated, and she would always place herself squarely and promptly on the side of justice.
Just as the video ended, the audience erupted.
"It's slander!"
"Spike, you lied to us!"
The shouting grew louder and louder. Backstage, a producer, looking slightly flustered, gave an order. "Lower the background audio."
He had already ordered the sound to be lowered several times to ensure the show could proceed smoothly. Otherwise, the screams directed at Spike would have reached millions of homes through the television signal.
Inside a home in the Westwood district of Los Angeles, cheers erupted as Brian and Thompson congratulated each other.
Even as ordinary people, they knew that with the release of these videos, all accusations against Matthew had been exposed as slander. Spike Lee was nothing but a lying scoundrel!
At the same time, Vin Diesel watched the scene unfold and unconsciously pressed the power button on his remote.
"What an idiot! I thought you had some key evidence... You damn fool!"
In Hollywood's Black circles, Spike Lee was notorious for his big mouth.
On stage, in just two seconds, Oprah determined her stance. She turned her head toward Spike Lee, pointed at the large screen, and asked, "Director Lee, what do you think of all this? Do you still believe that Matthew is a supposed racist?"
Her tone carried a distinct accusatory edge, as if she were questioning Spike Lee on behalf of the countless disgruntled viewers watching at home.
"This just means..." Spike began, his face twitching as he pointed at Matthew, "that he might care about Black people in Africa, but that doesn't prove he won't discriminate against Black people in the United States of America!"
At these words, Matthew, Oprah, the entire audience, and even Will Smith in front of his television were left completely stunned.
