Chapter 254
Chapter 254
Behind the police station stood a stretch of broken barbed-wire fence. With a running start, Matthew vaulted over it, landed on the other side, and glanced back. The zombies weren't pursuing him. He relaxed slightly. With a sigh, Matthew moved forward.
Soon, he spotted a section where the barbed wire was torn, and tangled in the middle was a steel pipe, nearly a meter long.
Realizing he'd fled the police station unarmed, he quickly grabbed the pipe, trying to yank it free from the tangled wire.
He had to grip one end of the pipe with both hands and plant his feet for leverage. With a piercing scrape that grated on the ears, the pipe finally broke free from the barbed wire and landed in his hands.
Matthew gave it a few test swings and, seeming quite satisfied, he nodded and was about to move on.
"Cut!"
Behind the camera, director Zack Snyder's voice rang out, "Moving on. All actors ready?"
The assistant director immediately shouted back, "Ready!"
Zack gave the order, "Have the cameras adjust their positions."
Matthew remained motionless, just as Zack had instructed, while two cameras moved along pre-laid tracks. They stayed to his left, but one filmed a reverse shot of Matthew while the other captured him head-on.On Zack's command, filming soon resumed.
Clutching the cold pipe, Matthew advanced on high alert, a hint of fear and nervousness about the unknown coloring his posture as he walked. Reaching a bend in the barbed-wire fence, he stopped abruptly when he heard the sound of footsteps from across the street.
Matthew peered out, only to see a man and a young woman running toward him. The man was a middle-aged actor in his forties, and the young woman was Alexandra.
A large group of extras, made up to look like zombies, followed close behind them.
All the extras were running as fast as they could, baring their teeth and clawing the air like wild animals, growling and moaning.
The two actors weren't holding back either, running as if their lives depended on it, and as they drew closer and closer, the film crew suddenly fell unusually silent.
The entire crew seemed to freeze for a moment.
The sound engineer’s mouth fell slightly open as he watched the running actors—or more precisely, the running actress.
Two female makeup artists frowned, their eyes flashing with envy and jealousy.
"They're so big..." muttered the young guy in charge of props on set. "So big..."
It wasn't just them; even Matthew froze for a second as Alexandra’s chest bounced up and down, seemingly ready to burst out of her bra at any moment. It was a mesmerizing sight that could only be described as magnificent.
"Why are they so big?" Matthew wondered.
It was unlikely a girl her age had undergone surgery, so they had to be completely natural.
It wasn't just Matthew; even director Zack Snyder was taken aback for a moment. It wasn’t that Hollywood lacked actresses with similar figures, but the visual impact created by the young actress running like that was... shocking!
Zack realized the atmosphere on set was all wrong and yelled, "Cut!"
Matthew shook his head slightly, knowing this scene would definitely have to be reshot.
Sure enough, Zack’s shout followed, "We’ll reshoot in five minutes!"
Zack’s yell brought the crew back to normal. Matthew looked ahead: the extras playing the walkers were shuffling back to their starting positions, while the two actors were bent over, hands on their knees, panting heavily as they tried to catch their breath.
He glanced first at the middle-aged actor, then his gaze fell on Alexandra. Probably noticing his stare, the girl looked up, met Matthew’s eyes, and immediately gave him a slightly shy smile.
...
Five minutes passed in the blink of an eye, and filming soon resumed.
At director Zack's command, Matthew once again stepped behind the bend in the chain-link fence.
When Zack gave the command to start, Alexandra and the other actor started running again, followed by the group of zombie extras, who seemed even faster than before.
"Switch cameras," Zack told the assistant cameraman. "Get a close-up on Alexandra’s chest as the focal point."
The real-time camera feed displayed on the monitor in front of him, and Zack thought it was truly impressive. In fact, the scene could be even more spectacular if it were shot in high-speed and then played back on the big screen in slow motion. It would stun a lot of viewers.
It was a shame, a real shame, that Sean hadn’t approved his request to shoot in high-speed slow motion.
Once he finished this film and built up some capital, he would have to choose a subject and genre for his next film that played to his strengths.
He watched the live feed on the monitor as Matthew rushed forward to meet Alexandra, and then he called a cut.
Next, it was time to film the fight with the zombies, which Matthew had rehearsed with the props team and the director. Matthew was known for his strength and was holding a real steel pipe, which would be no laughing matter for the extras if he accidentally hit them in the head.
The crew had already prepared dummies that could be used as stand-ins for the zombies, with near-realistic resin heads and skin filled with prop blood.
Of course, the first ones on set to film with Matthew were the extras in their zombie makeup.
"Come on! This way!"
Seeing Alexandra running toward him, Matthew immediately rushed to her side. He could already see that her pursuers looked just like the girl who had attacked him at the police station, with snow-white skin and decaying bodies.
"Help!"
Like all beautiful window dressing, Alexandra had only two tasks: to keep showing off her sexy figure for the camera and to scream at the top of her lungs.
Matthew let the two of them pass and met the first zombie rushing toward him. He kicked it in the chest, and the extra playing the zombie fell to the ground right on cue. Another five or six zombies arrived, and Matthew took them on one by one with gusto. He knocked down three in a row with his immense strength.
A fourth zombie lunged at him, its bloody mouth snapping at his left arm.
Matthew sharply sidestepped the walker, the steel pipe smashing into the dead thing’s head so hard that it immediately collapsed to the ground.
But before he could move on, the zombies he had knocked down got back up.
"What?" Matthew asked aloud in disbelief. "How are they still on their feet? I broke their ribs."
The middle-aged man said from behind him, "I shot them with a pistol, but they don’t die."
Several walkers rose to their feet, black, almost congealed blood oozing from their mouths, and along with two female zombies that ran up to him, Matthew found himself surrounded.
"Cut!" Zack shouted. "Bring in the dummies."
An assistant quickly brought a bottle of water, and Matthew took two gulps. Seeing Alexandra’s chest rising and falling, and that she seemed to be unwell, he told the assistant, "Give her a bottle of water."
The assistant soon brought a bottle of water to Alexandra and said, "Matthew told me to give this to you."
Alexandra unscrewed the bottle cap, took a few sips, and felt better. She turned her head toward Matthew, saw him looking at her, and nodded in his direction with a smile.
The crew quickly set up the new dummies, and Alexandra handed the water back to the assistant, regulating her breathing.
Filming resumed. Matthew raised the steel pipe, smashing the heads of the six dummies in various ways, sending brains bursting and blood splattering across the set in a gruesome display.
Matthew’s face and clothes were spattered with blood.
It was definitely an intense scene.
Matthew knew this was one of the selling points of zombie films; violence and gore were essential components of commercial movies, especially R-rated ones.
The crew then took a short break. Matthew was sitting on a chair in the makeshift rest area, and Alexandra pulled up a chair and sat down next to him.
They chatted casually for a few moments before Alexandra asked, "Is there something wrong with me? So many people were staring at me during the shoot."
Matthew gave her a strange look, feeling the urge to ask what on earth she ate growing up, but he resisted and simply said, "The crew is mostly men."
Alexandra understood immediately and didn’t seem the least bit embarrassed. "Oh, so that’s what it was."
"By the way, Matthew," she suddenly changed the subject. "I only have the script for my character; I haven’t seen the full version. Have you read it?"
Matthew nodded.
Alexandra asked curiously, "Is the female lead a difficult role to play?"
"No, not at all." Matthew shook his head slowly. "Jessica Alba’s role isn’t that big. At best, she’s a supporting actress."
