"Stephen Sommers?" Philip looked at Sean. "What does he have in mind?"

Sean replied, "Stephen wants to make a spin-off about the Scorpion King, something like a prequel to 'The Mummy' series, but set in Ancient Egypt."

Noticing the silence in the room, he added, "You've all seen the press reviews over the last few days. The Scorpion King character has drawn the most attention."

"It's too risky to promote a supporting character to a lead role," Jet immediately objected. "We should be making a sequel to 'The Mummy' instead."

"We can make a sequel," Sean insisted, "but not now, not when audiences are dissatisfied with the current film."

The risk of continuing 'The Mummy' series was too great; if anything went wrong, the film would be a box office bomb, and the prestige built by two successful movies would be severely undermined.

Jet asked, "You want to immediately promote the actor who plays the Scorpion King to the lead role? Can he handle it?"

"He's a very good actor." Sean didn't say it directly, but his meaning was clear enough. "Especially for an action film."

"A good actor?" Jet shook his head. "I'd never even heard of him before 'The Mummy Returns' came out."

Sean was about to speak, but Philip, the director of production, stopped him and asked, "How far along is Stephen's plan?"

"The outline is complete; he just has to write the script," Sean considered for a moment, then added, "He wanted to wait until the screenplay was finished before pitching it to Universal Pictures along with the overall plan. "What is it?" Brendan sat on the sofa and answered the phone, his tone harsh from his foul mood. "I believe I told you I have the day off."

His agent seemed completely unbothered by his tone—stars were always temperamental. He said into the phone, "I just heard from the top brass at Universal Studios. They might cancel the next 'Mummy' installment!"

Brendan shot to his feet. "What?"

His face was a mask of disbelief. 'The Mummy Returns' had already grossed over $50 million in its first two days, and various agencies were predicting an easy $200 million at the North American box office. "With Matthew as the lead?" Brendan muttered under his breath. "How is that possible? He's just a supporting actor."

The agent added, "No decision has been made within Universal Pictures yet. Brendan, the bigwigs in Universal's production department are split into two factions. One, led by Sean, believes you're losing your popular appeal, so they don't want to move forward with another film starring you.
