The Alpha And The Fifth Blood

Chapter 80: That Wasn’t Him

Chapter 80: That Wasn’t Him

Chapter 80

Ariana stopped walking without realizing it.

One moment she had been moving forward, trying to stay focused on what she needed to do next. The next, something hit her chest hard enough to steal her breath. It wasn’t physical, but it felt real enough that her body reacted immediately. She pressed her hand against her chest and took a step back, her foot sinking slightly into soft moss that didn’t feel entirely solid, and tried to steady herself as her breathing turned uneven.

The feeling didn’t go away.

Instead, it stayed and slowly spread, tightening in a way that made it harder to breathe properly. Ariana had felt pain before, but this was different. It didn’t come from an injury, and it didn’t feel like her own power reacting. It felt like something had reached her from somewhere else. The forest around her remained unnaturally still, the pale trees unmoving, their faint glow offering no warmth.

She closed her eyes for a moment and tried to focus. Instinctively, she reached for the bond. There was still nothing there.

The emptiness hit her again, but this time it didn’t remain empty. Something moved in its place. It didn’t feel like the bond she had known. It wasn’t warm or familiar. It didn’t feel like something reaching for her. It felt like something noticing her. Ariana opened her eyes immediately.

"No," she said quietly.

She tried again, more carefully this time, focusing on that same space, searching for anything that felt like him. For a brief moment, she almost convinced herself that what she felt was close enough to recognize.

Then it changed. The feeling shifted into something heavier and unfamiliar. It didn’t pull her closer. It pressed against her instead, like it was testing how she would react. Ariana stepped back again, her chest tightening.

"That’s not him," she said under her breath.

But the presence didn’t leave. It stayed close, steady, and aware. Ariana forced herself to stop moving. She understood that running wouldn’t help. This wasn’t something she could put distance between. It was connected to something deeper, something she couldn’t avoid. She took a slow breath and tried to steady herself.

"Kael," she said, louder this time.

The name hung in the air. For a moment, nothing happened. Then something responded.

It wasn’t a voice or a clear thought, but she felt the reaction immediately. The pressure in her chest shifted again, stronger than before. It didn’t feel like recognition. It didn’t feel like warmth. It felt like something had turned its attention toward her.

Ariana’s breathing became uneven again. Her hand pressed harder against her chest.

"That’s not him," she repeated, but this time her voice wasn’t as steady.

Because part of her wasn’t sure anymore. The presence moved again, and this time it pushed. It wasn’t enough to hurt her, but it was enough to make her step back again. She caught herself before losing balance completely and forced herself to stay upright. Her expression hardened slightly.

"What are you?" she asked.

There was no answer, but the presence remained close and focused on her. And then she understood something she didn’t want to accept. It was connected to him.

Not the bond she had known. Not the same connection. But something that came from him. Something that had changed. Ariana shook her head slowly.

"No... that’s not possible."

But the feeling didn’t change. It stayed, watching and reacting in a way that didn’t feel like Kael at all, and her chest tightened again.

"You’re still there," she said, forcing the words out.

For a brief moment, the presence paused. It wasn’t gone or weaker, just still, and that was enough to make her breath catch because it meant it heard her.

"You’re still there," she said again, more firmly.

The presence shifted again. This time, it reacted. Not warmly, not in a way that reached for her, but in a way that acknowledged her. Like it was deciding.

Ariana felt that difference immediately, and it unsettled her more than anything else. Her fingers tightened slightly at her side, but she didn’t step back.

"If that’s you," she said slowly, "then listen."

The air around her remained still. The presence didn’t leave. It stayed focused on her. Ariana swallowed, her throat tight.

"You’re not alone," she continued. "You don’t have to do this."

She didn’t get to finish. The pressure in her chest surged suddenly, stronger than before, forcing a sharp breath out of her. It pushed inward in a way that felt deliberate, like it was rejecting what she said.

Ariana staggered back again, her hand pressing harder against her chest. Her breathing became uneven.

"That’s not you," she said, louder this time.

The presence didn’t pull away. It stayed close, growing heavier, and for the first time, it felt dangerous. Ariana’s chest tightened sharply as she began to understand what that meant. This wasn’t something trying to reach her anymore. It was something that could push her away, or worse. Her eyes hardened.

"No," she said.

This time, her voice was steady. Instead of stepping back, she stepped forward.

The presence reacted immediately. The pressure increased again, like it was warning her not to come closer. Ariana didn’t stop.

"If you can hear me," she said, keeping her voice steady, "then you’re still there."

The presence didn’t answer. But it didn’t disappear either. That was enough. Ariana took another slow breath, forcing herself to stay calm.

"You don’t get to disappear like this," she said. Her voice softened slightly.

"You don’t get to become something I don’t recognize."

The presence shifted again. It felt less aggressive now, but it was still distant and still watching, and Ariana’s chest tightened as the realization settled in. He wasn’t gone, but he wasn’t the same anymore, and whatever this was, it was only getting stronger.

Ariana closed her eyes and reached again, not for the bond, but for him. This time, something answered clearly. It didn’t feel warm or familiar. It felt heavy and wrong. Then a thought that wasn’t hers settled in, clear enough to understand and cold enough to stop her breathing.

"You should stop looking for him."

Ariana’s eyes opened, and this time she knew.

That wasn’t Kael.
