Chapter 55: When the Bond Breaks
Chapter 55: When the Bond Breaks
Chapter 55
It did not wait. The moment fear spread through the space, the darkness above moved with sudden, overwhelming force. It did not descend slowly or test her again. It came down hard, immediate and crushing, like it had decided there was no reason to hold back anymore. The pressure struck Ariana first, forcing the air out of her lungs as it slammed into her chest. The cracks beneath her feet widened instantly, light tearing upward in violent lines as the ground beneath her stopped feeling stable, as if one wrong step would send her falling through it.
The deeper current reacted immediately, but this time it did not hesitate. It answered. Ariana’s breath broke as the pull surged through her, dragging at something deeper than her body. It was no longer guiding her or testing her limits. It was taking her. "No..." she tried to say, but her voice barely held together under the pressure. The gold beneath her skin flared sharply, pushing back against the force trying to claim her, but the clash sent pain through her chest and down her arms. The force drove her to one knee, her hand hitting the ground hard enough to fracture the surface beneath her palm.
"I said no," she forced out again, her voice strained, but the darkness did not slow. It pressed harder, tightening around her like something closing in. The space shook violently, the pressure wrapping around her body with increasing force. Then Kael’s voice cut through everything. "Ariana!" This time it was close, not distant, and that alone made her head lift. The bond flared instantly, strong and alive, giving her just enough to hold onto. She pushed herself back to her feet, unsteady but still standing.
Kael broke through the final layer at the same moment. The barrier gave way under his force, and as soon as he stepped inside, the pressure hit him hard enough to bend him forward. His breath caught, but he forced himself upright, ignoring the strain as his eyes searched for her. He found her immediately. She was still there, still fighting, and the sight hit him with sharp relief that only drove him forward faster. The ground cracked under each step as the space twisted around him, trying to slow him down, but he did not stop. "Ariana," he called as he closed the distance, his hand catching hers without anything stopping him this time.
The moment their skin touched, everything changed. The darkness above surged downward with violent force, and the ground split open beneath them as the air itself seemed to tear under the pressure. Ariana gasped as the deeper current reacted again, pushing against Kael’s hold and trying to tear her away from him. Kael tightened his grip immediately. "I have you," he said, his voice firm despite the strain. The bond exploded between them, bright and overwhelming, and for one second nothing else existed. Ariana felt him clearly, real and close, and the warmth of that connection tightened painfully in her chest.
"You should not have come," she whispered.
"That was never your choice to make."
Something in her almost broke at that, but the moment did not last. The deeper current surged again, stronger than before, and her body jerked forward as the pull toward the darkness doubled. Kael felt it instantly, his grip tightening. "What is it doing?" he asked, sharper now.
Ariana shook her head, struggling to steady her breathing. "It’s not just pulling me," she said quietly. "It’s tying itself to us."
Kael went still for a second. "To us?"
She nodded, pain crossing her face. "If I let it take me, it will stop fighting," she said. "And if you don’t?" he asked.
Ariana met his eyes, and the answer came with quiet certainty. "It will tear through everything that is holding it back."
The meaning settled between them immediately. The bond. Kael’s jaw tightened. "No," he said, low and firm.
Ariana swallowed. "I can feel it. If I push it away now, it will break us."
Kael did not hesitate. "Then don’t push it away."
She shook her head slightly. "There is no other way."
The space cracked again as the darkness pressed closer, the pressure building until it was hard to breathe. Time was running out. Kael pulled her closer without thinking. "I’m not letting you disappear," he said.
Ariana’s chest hurt as she looked at him. "You might not have a choice."
"I always have a choice."
The bond flared again, stronger this time, and the deeper current reacted. It paused, just for a second. Ariana felt it clearly, that hesitation, that opening. She took it. She held onto Kael, not gently, but like everything depended on it, because it did.
"You do not get this," she said, her voice steady despite the pressure. The space shook violently, but she did not stop. "You do not get my name."
The gold flared brighter, pain tearing through her chest, but she held on. "You do not get him."
For one second, the deeper current followed her instead of the darkness.
Kael felt it instantly. "You’re doing it," he said, his voice tight.
Ariana felt it too. Control. Real control. For a moment, it was enough.
Then everything collapsed.
The darkness answered with force. The pressure exploded, and the ground split wide beneath them as the impact slammed into Kael, trying to tear him away from her. He held on as long as he could.
"Ariana!"
The pull increased, her body jerking forward as the deeper current surged violently. It was no longer choosing. It was taking. Kael’s grip tightened painfully.
"I’m not letting go!"
Ariana cried out as the force inside her doubled, her voice breaking. "Kael..."
The bond surged wildly between them, unstable and straining under the pressure.
Then the pull shifted again, not at her this time, but at the connection itself.
Kael felt it inside his chest, like something reaching in and tearing at the bond. His breath broke. "No... stop."
Ariana felt it too, panic rising. "It’s going for the bond," she said.
"Then we hold it," Kael answered, stepping closer.
But the bond was no longer steady. It surged in uneven waves, too strong one second and fading the next. Pain spread through her chest, sharp and deep.
"It hurts," she said.
"I know," Kael answered.
Another surge hit, and for one second, he felt nothing. No connection. No Ariana. Just emptiness.
That terrified him more than anything.
"Stay with me," he said.
"I’m trying," she answered, but the bond cracked again, not gone, but breaking. Ariana cried out, and Kael felt it tear through him piece by piece.
"No," Kael said, pulling her closer as the space twisted violently around them, the pressure building until it felt like the world itself was about to split. Something had to give. Ariana felt it before it happened, the breaking point settling deep in her chest with quiet, undeniable certainty. "If you don’t let go," she whispered, her voice trembling despite everything she was trying to hold together, "it will take you too."
Kael didn’t hesitate. "I don’t care."
"You have to."
"I’m not leaving you."
Her chest tightened painfully, tears blurring her vision as she looked at him, really looked at him, knowing what this moment meant. "You won’t survive it."
"I will."
"You won’t."
The deeper current surged again, violent and unstable, tearing through her control as the bond between them stretched further, thinner, fragile in a way it had never been before. Ariana felt it slipping, felt the exact moment where holding on would destroy him, and something inside her broke with that realization. She made her choice.
She forced her hand to move. Kael felt it instantly. "No."
But she pulled away.
The force between them surged as the darkness answered, exploding outward with crushing pressure that tore at everything holding them together. Their hands slipped, but for one impossible second they held on, fingers barely touching, refusing to separate even as the space itself forced them apart. Kael’s eyes locked onto hers, raw and desperate. "Ariana!"
She shook her head, her voice breaking under the weight of everything she couldn’t say. "I’m sorry."
The bond didn’t weaken.
It didn’t fade. It snapped.
Completely.
Kael felt it tear through his chest like something vital had been ripped out of him, raw and sudden, leaving nothing behind. His grip gave way, not because he chose to let go, but because there was nothing left to hold.
Ariana was taken.
Pulled away in an instant, swallowed by the darkness as the last trace of light around her vanished.
She was gone. Kael did not move at first. Then the pain hit. Not physical.
Something worse.
His chest felt empty in a way that made it hard to breathe. "Ariana..." he said, but there was no answer. The space was silent, too silent.
His eyes darkened completely as the storm inside him exploded outward, lightning tearing through the ground and air around him.
"She’s still here," he said, his voice unsteady. "She has to be."
But there was no bond. No connection. Nothing. That broke him. Kael dropped to his knees, his hand pressing hard against his chest as if he could force something back into place, but there was nothing there to hold onto. No warmth, no presence, no Ariana. Only silence filled the space where she had been, heavy and suffocating, and for the first time, he had nothing to fight against.
"I’ll find you," he said, his voice rough, unsteady in a way it had never been before. "Even without the bond... I’ll find you." The words left him like a promise carved out of what little remained, something he forced into existence because the alternative was something he refused to face.
Then he froze. Something flickered, not the bond, not the same, but close enough to make his chest tighten sharply. It was weak, unstable, wrong. Kael’s eyes darkened as he focused on it, his breath catching when it brushed against his awareness again for a single second. "...Ariana?" he said, but the space did not answer. Whatever it was, it wasn’t her. It only felt like her, like something wearing her, and then it was gone. Kael’s hand clenched slowly, his voice dropping into something colder, more dangerous than before. "If that thing touches you again... I will tear this world apart to get you back."
